The gut-wrenching scream tore through the eerie silence of the night. The nurse on night duty burst into the room, startled by the sound. Samantha was thrashing in her bed, her legs tangled in the sheets, fists clenched so tightly that her knuckles turned white. Her face was flushed red, soaked with tears as she screamed in agony, her voice raw and trembling.

“Miss Blake! Miss Blake—please, calm down! What’s wrong?” The nurse’s voice rose in urgency. “You’re safe. Please try to breathe.” Hearing someone else’s voice calmed her a bit . Samantha’s screams began to fade, though her chest still heaved with uneven breaths. Her body remained rigid.

Before the nurse could do anything , the door slammed open.

“What happened? I heard her shouting?” Tom appeared, his steps hurried but unstable. His head was bandaged, a deep cut across his forehead now dried with blood . His face bore small bruises, and his left arm rested in a sling. He limped slightly as he rushed to her bedside.

“You shouldn’t be out of bed!” The  nurse scolded, shielding Samantha protectively.   Tom tried to move the nurse aside but she was adamant.

“Mr. Carter, you’ve been injured too. Please return to your room. Let us do our work.”  She blocked his way.

“Is she… is she okay?” He spoke in low voice as if it took lot's of courage to speak.

“She’s having a trauma attack ,” The nurse said firmly, while preparing a syringe.

“Please,  leave Mr. Carter. We’ve got it under control.” Tom left silently when he saw her gently injecting a sedative into Samantha’s IV. Within minutes, her tense body began to relax. The trembling subsided, her eyelids drooped,  slowly and finally—she drifted into a deep, drug-induced sleep.

Hours passed.

Late afternoon sunlight filtered through the curtains when Samantha stirred again. Her lashes fluttered, and she opened her eyes slowly, blinking at the ceiling. Distant murmurs filled the room.

“Hello, Richard,” Came a familiar voice—calm, deep, and unmistakably British. “How is Samantha doing?”

“She’s stable now,” Replied another voice, slightly softer but confident. “The accident must have triggered memories from the past. Her vitals are good, but mentally she’s fragile. It’s all there—under the surface.”

The voices belonged to two men standing at the far end of the room. Though they spoke in hushed tones, Samantha caught every word. She turned her head weakly and found herself looking into the concerned face of someone she hadn’t seen in a while.

“Uncle Henry…” she whispered, her voice dry , cracking and barely audible.

Henry turned to her instantly, a warm, relieved smile lighting up his face. “Ah, there she is.”

Tall, fit, and impeccably dressed in a navy jacket, Henry Blake carried the quiet authority of a man who had spent his life rebuilding others—both physically and emotionally. His salt-and-pepper hair and ocean-deep blue eyes made him seem timeless. A leading plastic surgeon in London, he was known for his precision in the operating theatre and his protectiveness outside of it.

He approached her slowly, crouching by her bed. “You gave us all quite a scare, sweetheart.”

Samantha’s eyes welled up. “I… I saw it again. All of it. The blood. The pain. My face…” Her voice broke.

Henry took her hand gently. “I know.” He pulled a chair and sat next to her bed.

The other man—Dr. Richard Mallory—walked forward with a kind smile. He had been Henry’s colleague and trusted friend for years, and had taken over Samantha’s care the moment she was brought in.

“Good to see you awake, Samantha,” he said kindly. “You’re safe now. Physically, you’re perfectly fine—just some bruises and minor head trauma. But it’s important you rest. We’re here for you.” He narrated while jotting down some details .

Samantha nodded faintly, her throat tight. The sedatives had dulled the panic, but the memories still hovered just beyond the edge of her mind. They haunt her every now and then.

Henry looked at Richard. “Thank you for everything.” His voice filled with gratitude.

“I’ll give you two some time,” Richard said and quietly stepped out closing the door behind.

For a moment, silence settled between them. Henry studied her carefully, his expression shadowed with concern.

“I took the first flight from London,” he said softly. “I couldn’t risk anything happening again. Not to you.” He kept his hand on hers and squeezing it gently.

Samantha looked away, ashamed. “I tried to be strong. But… it came rushing back. I thought I had buried it, but—” Tears filled her eyes. She turned her head away.

“You have sufferred more than anyone ever should,” Henry said, tightening his grip on her hand. “You rebuilt your life from the ashes. You’ve been brave, Sam.”

She closed her eyes, letting his words wrap around her like a blanket.

There was a knock at the door. A nurse peeked in. “There’s someone here to see her. He says he’s a friend. Mr. Tom Carter?”

Samantha hesitated, but nodded. “Let him in.”

Henry gave her a reassuring smile. “I’ll step out for a bit.” He got up and left the room.

Tom entered cautiously, still limping. His eyes were shadowed with guilt and concern.

“Hey,” he said, voice low. “I just… I needed to make sure you are safe " . He stood near the bed.

Samantha gave him a tired smile. “Thanks. You saved my life.”

“I panicked,” he admitted. “Didn’t know what to do. But I’m glad you’re alright.”

She reached out and gently touched his hand. “Me too.”

As he sat beside her, she leaned back into the pillow, her eyes half-closed again.

But her mind—her mind was not quiet.

Because no matter how many times she rebuilt herself, the cracks remained.

In the light of the corridor, a familiar silhouette caught Henry’s attention. Eyes dark and unreadable expression on his face.

Samantha PovToday, I am supposed to conduct Liam’s interview, and I must admit that this is one of the most challenging interviews I have conducted to date.Liam is observing my every move very closely. Like he’s trying to arrange the pieces of a puzzle together, and that thought alone sends a flicker of unease through me. What if he recognizes me? No . This can’t happen. Not now. I tighten my grip on the steering wheel, forcing myself to breathe evenly. You can do it. You have handled countless interviews before. This is just another one. Just another name. Just another face. Nothing more.Reminding myself that I am no longer Sanjana, I take a deep breath, straighten slightly, and focus on the road ahead. But my mind drifts back to that charity night. For a moment, it had felt like he could see right through me. His questions weren’t casual, they were searching. Digging. As if he was trying to dig something that is buried deep within me.If Uncle Henry hadn’t arrived in tim

Liam Pov The interview was set for today. It was supposed to e at the studio. I drove to the studio. Of all days I didn’t know why I felt like driving myself. Kabir accompanied. The studio was quieter than I expected. Soft lights with minimal crew was set up. All the movement were controlled and calculated. Everything was set but yet, something felt off. Or maybe it was just me who felt that way. It was not my first time giving an interview. I have given numerous interviews but I didn’t know why today something didn’t sit well. I stepped inside, my gaze instinctively searching. And found her. Miss Blake stood near the setup, going through her notes. She looked composed and professional. She didn’t even acknowledge my presence. As if we have never met. As if that night had never happened. As if I had just imagined it. “Mr. Turner.” One of the crew members approached. “We will be ready in two minutes.” I nodded, but my attention didn’t move away from her . For a brief secon

  • - Familiar Stranger   Chapter 42 A familiar unknown

Liam Pov Miss Blake sat beside me. Her eyes looked slightly swollen, subtle, but not enough to escape notice. Faint traces of tears lingered, as if she had wiped them away in a hurry.Something is not right but why is it bothering me more than it should have? I am engaged to Rose and should concentrate on her.I turned my head to the right. Rose was busy with her meal, perfectly composed, as if nothing around her required attention.“Mr Turner, please pass the steak.” I turned to the source of the voice. Miss Blake's soft, polished yet familiar voice drew my attention.I looked at her. Miss Blake gestured for the plate. I nodded and reached for the plate. As I handed it to her, our fingers brushed accidentally for a fraction of a second.Yet my body reacted before my mind could. I felt a faint jolt. A shiver ran down my spine. I stilled. Why are all these feelings known? As if I had gone through them long before. “I’m sorry,” I said automatically. But she had already with

  • - Familiar Stranger   Chapter 41 The distance between us

Samantha Pov Seeing Rose just reminded me of the reality that the person who stood before me has long forgotten me. I turned and walked away. My steps faltered but I managed to walk away. Away from Liam, away from the past that I had buried long ago, which is now threatening to resurface after seeing Liam. Tears brimmed but I blinked them. Not here, not now. I wobbled slightly but took the support of the nearby chair. I scanned the room for a place where I could sit and relax a bit. My eyes landed on a corner that was calm and quiet, a little away from the hustle and bustle of the room. My legs automatically moved towards that corner. I sank into the chair. With trembling hands, I kept my bag on the table. It took a moment to calm myself. I sat there in silence. And then the tears I had held back began to flow freely. I covered my face with my hands. My body shook despite my attempts to stay composed. How could God be so merciless.? Five years. It took five years to rebui

  • - Familiar Stranger   Chapter 40 The name that Slipped

Liam Pov The journalists took the cue and began dispersing. Guests slowly moved towards the banquet hall, their conversations were a low murmur that filled the room. “Why don’t you join Mom and the others for dinner?” I said, gently removing Rose’s hand from my arm. “I’ll be back before you even notice I’m gone.” “I’ll wait for you.” She replied, her fingers tightening slightly as she placed her hand back on my arm. “We can have dinner together once you’re done.” “Just do as I say,” I cut in, my tone sharper than intended. The politeness that I was holding was long gone. I pulled my arm free and walked away without waiting for her response. I could feel her displeasure without turning back. But I didn’t stop. I walked aimlessly through the hall, my steps slowing as the crowd thinned. Why was I still here? Why hadn’t I left? I didn’t have an answer. My gaze moved across the room, restless, searching for something that I can’t even name . And then my gaze stopp

Catherine PovSamantha was right the dance step could be performed by anyone. That can’t be the basis for accusing anyone. I was scanning the room when my eyes landed on my son Liam who was looking restless and was explaining something to Kabir who was sitting next to him . All of a sudden, his gaze shifted and halted. I followed his gaze and was shocked to find him looking intently towards Miss Blake who was holding his gaze. But why is he so interested in her. What is it that has attracted her. I need to find. Things are not so simple as they look on the surface.I scanned the room once again and found a corner which was slightly less crowded . Picking my belongings I went there and dialled a number. At first, it was not answered. I tried again, this time the call was connected . A sharp baritone voice boomed from other side.“ Hello, good evening, madam.” His voice was steady and controlled.“ Daniel where were you? I was calling you.” I asked, irritation slipping through desp
