The morning light filtered softly through the penthouse windows as Elena stood in the kitchen making coffee. Mia sat at the island, swinging her legs while carefully coloring a new drawing. This one showed the three of them holding hands under a rainbow. The purple cast made her movements a little clumsy, but she was determined.

"Look, Mommy," Mia said proudly, holding it up. "I added sprinkles on the rainbow because Daddy likes them."

Elena smiled and kissed the top of her head. "It is perfect, baby. We will hang it on the fridge."

Damian walked in wearing only sweatpants, hair still messy from sleep. He scooped Mia up with one arm and kissed Elena on the cheek.

"Morning, my girls," he said softly, voice warm. "Pancakes?"

Mia cheered. For a few precious minutes, the three of them moved around the kitchen like any other family. Damian flipping pancakes, Elena pouring juice, Mia chattering about her favorite cartoon. No board meetings. No tabloids. Just the clink of plates and laughter.

But the illusion shattered the moment Damian's phone buzzed on the counter.

The tabloid had dropped.

The headline screamed across every major site: "Damian Holt's Secret Son Exposed. Abandoned at Birth."

Elena opened the article with shaking fingers. The photo of the hospital document was front and center. The story claimed Damian had known about the boy from day one and paid to hide him.

Mia looked up curiously. "Why is my picture on the phone again?"

Damian quickly turned the screen away. "Nothing important, sweetheart. Finish your pancakes."

Lila rushed in from the guest room, hair messy. "It is everywhere. T*****r is exploding. Theo is already doing interviews saying this proves Damian is unfit."

Before they could respond, the doorbell rang. Security let in an unexpected visitor.

Victoria Holt stood in the doorway, looking exhausted but composed. Behind her was a tall woman in a sharp suit. Damian's ex fiancée, Lauren, Victoria's new ally on the board.

"Damian," Victoria said quietly. "We need to talk. Privately."

The ex fiancée, Lauren, gave Elena a cold smile. "Nice dress last night. Shame about the scandal."

Damian stepped protectively in front of Elena and Mia. "Whatever you have to say, say it here."

Lauren crossed her arms. "The board is panicking. The stock dropped twelve percent in pre market. They are demanding you step down until this secret son situation is resolved. Victoria and I are offering a solution. A quiet exit package. You keep your shares. We keep the company clean."

Victoria added, "And we make the tabloid story disappear. Permanently."

Elena felt rage rise. "You mean you bury the truth again."

Mia tugged Damian's hand. "Daddy, who are these ladies? They look mad."

Damian knelt and kissed Mia's forehead. "Just some people from work, baby. Go finish your drawing with Lila."

Lila gently led Mia away.

The moment they were out of earshot, Damian's voice turned ice cold. "You two really think you can blackmail me with a fake son story?"

Lauren smiled. "It is not fake. The hospital record is real. The boy existed. And the tabloid has proof you paid to hide him."

Elena stepped forward. "There was no boy. This is another lie from Marcus Vale."

Victoria's eyes flickered. "Marcus is in custody. He cannot help you now."

The conversation was interrupted by another buzz. This time from Elena's phone. A message from an unknown number.

She opened it.

A short video started playing automatically.

It showed Marcus Vale in a police interrogation room, speaking directly to the camera.

"I lied about the son. There was no baby boy. The Polaroid was planted. But the real secret is bigger. Theo and Victoria were not fighting over the company. They were fighting over who gets to control the patent and the person who actually owns it."

The video cut to a document.

A patent transfer form dated five years ago.

Signed by Damian Holt.

Transferring full ownership of the billion dollar gene editing technology to his then unborn child.

The video ended with Marcus's final words:

"The child was never the secret. The patent was. And the board is about to find out who really owns Vanguard's future."

Elena looked up at Damian in shock.

He stared at the document in horror.

The patent that could change medicine forever did not belong to Damian anymore.

It belonged to Mia.

And the entire world was about to find out.

Lauren's smile faltered for the first time. "What is that?"

Victoria's face went pale. "Marcus lied to all of us."

Damian stepped forward, voice steady. "The patent belongs to our daughter. Not to the company. Not to either of you. The board will see the truth this morning."

Lauren laughed bitterly. "You think the board cares about a child? They care about money. And right now the stock is crashing because of this story."

The doorbell rang again. Security escorted in the board chairman himself, looking exhausted.

"Damian," he said. "We saw the tabloid. The patent issue is now public. The investors are demanding answers. We need you and Elena in the boardroom in thirty minutes. Bring every document you have."

As the chairman left, Mia peeked around the corner, holding her new drawing.

"Daddy, is the boy on the phone my brother? Can he come play with us?"

The innocent question hit like a knife.

Elena knelt and hugged her tightly. "No, baby. There is no brother. Someone made a mistake. But we are fixing it."

Mia nodded and went back to coloring.

Damian pulled Elena aside. "The patent transfer was real. I signed it the morning after Vegas. I do not even remember why. I was drunk. I thought it was just paperwork."

Elena touched his face. "We will figure it out. Together."

Lila walked in holding her phone. "Sarah just went live on LinkedIn again. She is claiming she has proof that you knew about the boy and hid him to protect the patent."

The drama was multiplying.

Outside the penthouse the city was waking up to the scandal. Inside, the family tried to hold on to one normal moment over pancakes.

But the clock was ticking.

The board meeting was in thirty minutes.

The patent belonged to Mia.

And the real secret was still waiting to explode.

  • Familiar Strangers    Chapter 34: The Sister Who Erased Him

I stood frozen, the USB drive still warm from the laptop. The video was paused on the last frame; Victoria leaning over the sleeping Damian, her fingers brushing his hair like she owned him. Her whisper still echoed in my head.'Sleep well, little brother.'Little brother. Not half-sister. Full sister. The words sat heavy in my throat. I couldn’t speak. I couldn’t even breathe properly.Damian was still waiting exactly where I’d left him, leaning against the kitchen island, arms crossed, eyes locked on me the second I appeared. The moment he saw my face he straightened, the easy calm in his posture vanishing.“Elena?” His voice was low, careful. “What is it?”I walked over and placed the USB on the counter between us like it might burn me. My hands were shaking. “I watched it. All of it.”He reached for me, but I stepped back. Not because I didn’t want him, because I didn’t know how to say the next part without breaking something between us.“Victoria wasn’t just trying to ruin us,”

  • Familiar Strangers    Chapter 33: The Secret She Carried Home

The hospital corridor smelled like bleach and lilies. I clutched the tiny USB drive in my fist so hard the plastic edges dug into my palm. My mother’s words kept echoing: 'Watch it alone first.' I could still feel the weight of her hand in mine, the way her fingers had trembled when she pressed the drive into my palm.I stepped into the elevator alone. The doors slid shut and I leaned against the mirrored wall, staring at my own reflection. Eyes red. Lips pressed tight. The woman looking back at me looked like she was one breath away from breaking.'What the hell is on this thing?'When I stepped outside, Damian was waiting exactly where he said he would be, leaning against the car, arms crossed, eyes scanning every face that left the building until they landed on me. The second he saw me he straightened, opening the passenger door before I even reached him.I slid in without a word. He got behind the wheel, started the engine, but didn’t pull away. Instead he turned to me, one hand r

  • Familiar Strangers    Chapter 32: The Night She Couldn't Say No

I stared at the message until the words blurred. 'New tests this morning. Come alone tonight.' My thumb hovered over the screen, heart hammering so hard it felt like it was trying to punch through my ribs. The penthouse was quiet except for the low hum of the fridge and Mia’s soft breathing from down the hall. I locked the phone and set it face-down on the counter like it might bite me.'What else could she possibly have to tell me? We already know Victoria set up the night in Vegas. We already know Marcus turned on them. What is left?'Damian stepped out of the bedroom, hair still damp from the shower we’d shared earlier. He took one look at my face and crossed the room in three strides.“What is it?” he asked, voice low.I handed him the phone without a word. He read it once, jaw tightening.“I’m driving you,” he said immediately.“She said alone.”“I’ll wait in the car. As close as you need me.” He set the phone down and pulled me against him, one hand sliding up my back under the

  • Familiar Strangers    Chapter 31: The Morning She Couldn’t Stop Crying

I stood barefoot in the kitchen, silk robe slipping off one shoulder, staring at the city lights that refused to care. My mother’s words from yesterday kept looping in my head like a broken record. Stage four. Not much time left. The way she tried to smile through it, like cancer was just another secret we could bury with the rest of them. My chest felt hollow, like someone had scooped everything out and left only this heavy, aching void.I gripped the marble counter until my knuckles turned white. Tears slipped down my cheeks again, hot and silent. I thought I had cried them all out in the hospital, but apparently my body had an endless supply.*Why her? After everything she sacrificed, after all the lies and the blackmail and the Vegas mess… this is how it ends?*I didn’t hear Damian come in. One second I was alone with my thoughts, the next his bare chest was pressed against my back, warm and solid, his arms sliding around my waist like he could hold the pieces of me together.“I k

  • Familiar Strangers    Chapter 30: The Whistleblower Contact

Elena lay in bed, staring at the ceiling. The penthouse was quiet except for the faint hum of the city far below. It was late at night, but sleep refused to come. Her mind kept drifting back to her mother in the hospital. The last message had said she was stable, but Elena could not stop wondering what her mother wanted to tell her in the morning. What secret was left? What part of that night in Vegas had they still not uncovered? She shifted restlessly under the sheets. Damian stirred beside her and opened his eyes."You are not sleeping," he said softly, his voice warm in the darkness. He turned toward her and pulled her closer, his hand resting on her waist. "What is on your mind?"Elena sighed. "My mother. She is in the hospital again. I keep thinking about what she wants to tell me tomorrow. What if it is something we do not want to hear?"Damian kissed her forehead gently. "Whatever it is, we will face it together. But right now you need to rest. Your mind is racing."He reached

  • Familiar Strangers    Chapter 29: Damian's Father Disapproves

The afternoon sun poured through the penthouse windows as Elena reached up for a glass in the kitchen. She was wearing only one of Damian's oversized shirts that barely reached her thighs. The fabric rode up as she stretched, exposing the curve of her bare ass.Damian walked in from the hallway and stopped, eyes darkening at the sight. He crossed the room in three strides, pressed his body against her back, and slid his hands under the shirt. His palms cupped her breasts as he kissed the side of her neck."You look far too tempting like this," he murmured, voice low and hungry. His fingers rolled her nipples until they hardened into tight peaks.Elena gasped softly, leaning back into him. "We have the strategy session soon.""Session can wait," he replied, one hand sliding down her stomach until his fingers found her already wet pussy. He stroked her slowly, teasing her clit with light circles. "I need you right now."He turned her around, lifted her onto the kitchen counter, and drop
