Chapter 3

Penulis: Lumi
"Merida!"

Andrew rushed over, frantic.

"The future of this school is riding on that invitational! How can you be so heartless?"

He looked at Wesley beside me.

"Her family has spoiled her rotten!

"Tell her to stop behaving like a princess!"

"I'm not throwing a tantrum."

I checked the competition's start time on my phone.

"The competition starts at 9:30 a.m.

"I usually get up at 8:30 and wear a face mask for 15 minutes.

"Then I go through my skincare routine and put on my makeup. I don't get to school until ten.

"You don't expect me to give up sleep for this, do you?"

Tom couldn't hold back a snort. "What do you expect from a girl who can't do anything but her makeup?

"Is putting on makeup the only thing you're good at?"

"None of your business. I refuse to leave the house without makeup."

"Which matters more, your makeup or this school?"

"Staying beautiful."

Andrew was grinding his teeth.

Minerva glared at me and turned to Ryan.

"Does this idiot have to be there?"

"Yes."

"Then if she won't cooperate, we'll tie her up and take her to the competition!

"There's no way she's holding this up! What are the rules for the final round?"

"It's a timed speed round. What matters is how fast you answer the questions.

"If neither team can answer them, you could be in trouble."

"Why?"

"Since she won't have done much by then, the host may call on her to answer."

"In theory, yes."

David relented.

"If she agrees to compete, I can try to have the start pushed back half an hour.

"She can bring her skincare products and makeup to school and put them on while she eats breakfast."

William wasn't having it.

"Mr. Mercer, you're letting her get away with far too much!

"This is a real academic competition, not a beauty pageant.

"And why should her makeup hold all of us up?! Would she die without it? Can't she even leave the house?"

While they were talking, I finished fixing my makeup.

I took the water Wesley handed me, sipped it, and frowned.

"It's too hot. My tongue's going to blister. Take it away."

Everyone looked a little uncomfortable with how fussy I was being.

Even David had had enough of me.

"Merida, remember where you are.

"This isn't your mansion."

Tom rolled his eyes.

"Princess, you usually turn your nose up at everything, and we can't be bothered to argue with you.

"But if you won't cooperate this time, you'll have the whole school against you."

Tom and I had been on decent terms at first.

But then he got close to Minerva.

After that, he kept his distance like everyone else. He also started calling me an idiot or just a pretty face all the time.

I lost count of his snide remarks.

I looked at them with a small smirk.

"If I compete, you'll have a very good chance of winning."

"What's that supposed to mean? You think we need you to win this?"

Minerva raised an eyebrow at me. Unfazed, I gave her a cold smile.

"Call it bragging, then."

I didn't explain further. Questions like these were child's play to me.

I was the sole designated heir to the Hale Group, a multinational conglomerate. My grandfather wanted me to join the board and take over as soon as I finished high school.

But I'd loved dancing since I was little.

A year earlier, my mother had helped me transfer into this private high school.

If I stood out in this national competition, my grandfather would send people to bring me home to take over the business.

So I'd deliberately made myself seem average just to be free to dance.

I focused on having fun and looking good, hoping he'd give up and find another heir.

I didn't think they would believe any of that if I told them.

To them, I was just some new-money heiress. The dumb blonde.

Tom said, "You have three hours before the roster has to be submitted. Think it over."

When David saw that I wouldn't even sign, he slammed his fist against the wall.

"Get the organizing committee on the phone. Ask about a substitution.

"Whatever happens, we are not forfeiting this."

He didn't take any of it out on me.

Even though he was falling apart, he made the call calmly.

But none of the students left.

A year after graduation, the dance production I starred in earned high praise in the industry and won audiences over. The dance company had me prepare for a national tour.On the last day of the tour, I changed into a white dress and stepped out of the dressing room. Minerva and my old classmates were waiting with armfuls of flowers. After graduating from high school, they'd all gotten into their dream colleges.A lot of reporters were waiting out there too.Seeing all those people, I instinctively turned around. I hoped to slip out the back and get home without having to face them.My classmates caught up and cut me off.My arms were full of flowers. The cards on the bouquets were full of heartfelt good wishes."Wishing Merida a brilliant future!""After seeing you dance today, I can die happy.""Merida, you've been the blonde of my dreams ever since the Academic Champions Invitational.""Can't wait for the next tour! Good luck with everything!"As I read their messages, my eyes fille

After the truth about my family came out, my life went on as usual.Dancing, makeup, the occasional low score. The one difference was that nobody called me the dumb blonde anymore.Whenever a dance competition came up, my classmates encouraged me to enter. On competition days, they were in the audience, cheering me on.With their support and encouragement, I gradually worked my way onto bigger stages.Six months before graduation, a major dance company offered me a place. My classmates were waiting for my decision. After thinking it over, I told them, "I turned it down for now. I want to graduate with all of you."They were caught off guard, and then they sighed with relief. Before every practice exam, Minerva would ask if I planned to take it seriously. If I did, she'd drop from first in our grade to second.I liked teasing her, so I often gave her misleading answers."I think I'll just wing this one."

The foundation signed a new funding agreement with our school for another ten years.David held a dance on the day he announced it.I had just walked in wearing my new dress when my classmates crowded around, saying they had a surprise for me.I followed them over. From a distance, I could see Minerva waiting with a shoebox.I opened it. A pair of pale pink heels.Minerva still didn't like me, but she'd lost the bet and had to keep her word. She was my minion now."The whole school chipped in for these. They're designer."We know how picky you are. You wouldn't put just anything on your feet."I decided to have some fun with her."Since you're my minion, could you help me put them on? I don't feel like bending down."Minerva's face darkened."No. I'm not touching your smelly feet."I looked at her."Isn't a minion supposed to do whatever the boss says?"She pulled a face and reluctantly crouched down."Lift your foot. I'll put them on for the princess."I gracefully lifted my foot and

For the extra round, ten teachers wrote one question each.Preston stepped forward for Rockford. The first question appeared. He was still reading it when I selected my answer.Green light.Second question.Green light. After I'd answered four questions correctly in a row, Preston started to look rattled. He couldn't understand how I could read and answer each question before he'd even finished scanning it.After getting the first five right, I glanced at him."Would you like me to give you a few seconds to think?"Sweat beaded on Preston's forehead."No. Go ahead.""All right."I selected another answer in the blink of an eye.Green light again. The teachers and students in our school's section had risen to their feet, tense with anticipation. They stayed quiet, afraid to break my concentration.Whenever the Rockford students' chatter distracted me, our side shouted them down."Shut up! Don't you dare say a word against her!""Weren't you the ones with doubts? Why so quiet now?""You

I hung up on him.Minerva saw it."Your grandfather?""A scam call.""A scammer saved in your phone as Grandpa?""Scammers have all sorts of tricks these days."Minerva clearly didn't believe me.The committee was writing the new questions.Suddenly the doors of the hall opened. The students by the entrance started talking over each other.Bodyguards came through first, clearing the way.Behind them was an old man in a casual suit. His hair wasn't fully white yet, and his eyes were sharp. Many of the teachers and students recognized him on sight. It was Edward Hale, chairman of the Hale Group. As soon as I saw my grandfather, I lowered my head and moved farther into the corner.Emma Collins, who sat next to me in class, asked, "Merida, is that old man looking for you?""No.""Then why is he coming over to our side?""Maybe there are no seats left on theirs.""There are plenty over there."Before I could find another excuse, my grandfather was standing in front of me."Merida. The hall was silent.Preston stood there with his mouth hanging open. The host didn't speak for a long moment. The technicians hurried to check the equipment. They went over every component and confirmed there was nothing wrong.I looked down at my reflection in the response pad's dark screen. My makeup was still perfect, and I let out a breath.Minerva rushed up and grabbed my hand."Th-that's impossible! How could an idiot like you...""Why is it impossible?"I looked up at her calmly. Her hand was shaking a little. She turned to the technicians."Is there something wrong with her response pad?"Preston's expression turned grim."There has to be! Your own teachers checked those! Who knows what's inside them!"He stood up."How could someone who's all boobs and no brains answer six questions in one go?"And n-not get a single one wrong?"I pulled my hand back and flexed my sore wrist."Were those six questions difficult?"I knew the answers the moment I read the questions."Minerva fr
