Chapter 4

Author: Anonymous
Everyone else was still caught up in the noise and laughter. I was the only one who noticed the sudden, razor-sharp look that crossed the new housekeeper's face.

All at once, it hit me. Wasn't this the very woman who had killed me?

I recognized the mole on her neck. I'd never forget it. That night, she'd covered herself head to toe, but when she bent over me in a frenzy, hacking my body apart, her neck had briefly been exposed for just a moment.

I cried out and ran to Dad, trying to grab his arm. "Dad, run! She's here for revenge!"

But my hand passed straight through him. He kept right on eating his lunch, oblivious, a happy smile spread across his face.

I nearly broke down. I'd almost forgotten I was only a soul now. Even with my own killer standing right in front of me, there was nothing I could do about it.

But I couldn't make sense of it. When had Dad caused this woman’s son to die?

While I was still racking my brain over it, someone burst into the station, shouting. "We've confirmed the victim's identity!"

The officer's eyes found Dad, and his expression shifted, suddenly full of pity.

My heart leaped into my throat. If Dad found out the body was mine, what would he even do?

Would he feel satisfied? Or would some small part of him actually grieve?

Everyone crowded around. Dad was just about to stand when Angeline suddenly clutched her stomach, her face draining of color like she was in real agony, and grabbed hold of his sleeve.

"Dad, my stomach hurts. Please, take me to the hospital?"

Dad froze mid-step, then, ignoring Frank's shouts after him, scooped Angeline up and ran out with her.

I was left standing there alone, watching my own name sit right there on the lab report for everyone to see. The irony of it was almost funny.

Of course. Angeline would always matter more than I did. He'd been one step away from finding out that body belonged to me.

It had happened this way more times than I could count. Angeline and I would both come down with fevers together. I'd be delirious, barely conscious, while Angeline was still running around fine, and Dad would take her to the hospital first every single time.

One time, weak and shaking, I'd dragged myself up and searched every cabinet in the house without finding a single fever tablet. In the end, I'd walked to the pharmacy myself, nearly passing out on the way there more than once. Too afraid of being a burden to Dad, I'd gritted my teeth and forced myself back home.

But just a few steps from my bedroom door, my strength gave out and I collapsed.

When Dad got home and found me passed out on the floor, he didn't check if I was alright. He kicked me.

His voice, thick with contempt, had rung in my ears. "It's just a fever. It's not going to kill you. One shot and Angeline was fine. Now you've learned how to play the pity card too?"

I'd come to, my eyelids like lead, and still I'd forced myself up, stumbling, and managed a smile so strained it barely qualified as one. "I'm sorry, Dad. I'm fine, really."

I was only putting on a brave face, terrified that if he saw me as dead weight, he'd cast me off for good.

Dad had scoffed. "Knew you were faking it. Get back to your room. Stop making a scene out here."

What he never knew was that my fever had spiked past 39 degrees Celsius that night. If not for that single fever pill, I probably wouldn't have made it.

Meanwhile, my father had run himself ragged for Angeline. He'd poured her hot water, gone out for medicine, even cooked for her with his own two hands.

This was the same man who liked to say a man's place was carrying a gun to protect his country, not tucked away in some kitchen corner. And yet, for her, he'd stand at that stove himself.

Sometimes I genuinely envied Angeline. She got every ounce of Dad's love without lifting a finger for it, while in his eyes, I'd always be nothing but a murderer.

Even now that I was dead, he wouldn't spare me so much as a moment.

  • Farewell, Dad   Chapter 9

A sharp crack rang out as Dad slapped Angeline's face. The slap left her stunned. She stopped crying and stared at him in disbelief, one hand pressed to her cheek.Dad's expression had gone dark."Paid them off? Every cent of Harper's money has been in your hands. What would she have paid anyone with? Why did no one speak up for her while she was alive, and only now that she's dead? Who's actually been paying people off to make them slander her?"Ten years ago, you were already nine years old. How could you not remember any of it? Why did you scream like that? Wasn't getting Dennis killed enough for you? That you had to get Harper killed too?"Hearing that left me almost dazed. He made it sound as if every mistake belonged to someone else. But it was Dad who'd been so stubborn and pig-headed. It was Dad who'd been so cold and merciless. It was Dad who'd never once seen anyone's true colors. So how had all of it suddenly become someone else's fault?Whatever Angeline had becom

  • Farewell, Dad   Chapter 8

Dad's eyes had turned dark and dangerous. Every line of his face said he wanted to kill her right there, but some part of him was still waiting to hear what she'd say next. The housekeeper's lips curled, faintly triumphant. "I told her, if she died, I'd spare your life."Dad's grip went slack, and he sank to the floor, all the strength gone out of him.The housekeeper burst out laughing. "You absolute fool. All these years, I watched your family. I watched you convince yourself your own daughter was the one who got your son killed, while you doted on the real culprit!"I actually thought it was an act, that you were just protecting yourself in case I came for revenge. I refused to believe any parent could truly not love their own child. That's why I took your daughter."But what a shame. Turns out you really were that much of a fool. Do you even deserve to call yourself a detective?"I lowered my eyes, a mist of tears blurring my vision. She was right. Some parents really don't l

  • Farewell, Dad   Chapter 7

Dad's hand went limp, and his phone slipped out and clattered to the floor. His lips moved like he wanted to say something, but no words came.Angeline stumbled back a few steps, all the color gone from her face. "Why is Harper's head in here? Who did you bring into this house?"Dad shot to his feet like something had just snapped in him, gripping Angeline hard by the shoulders.I hadn’t heard Dad call me by my childhood nickname since Dennis died.Seeing it now, my chest ached with something bittersweet. That long-lost affection had cost me my life to earn back.Angeline flinched, ducking her head, and burst into frightened tears, stammering, "No one... it's just the housekeeper. She's a woman. She wouldn't kill anyone. Dad, you're scaring me..."Something in Dad softened at the sight of her looking so pitiful, and he let go at once, apologizing. "I'm sorry, Angeline. That was my fault. I just panicked..."Angeline let out a breath of relief and threw herself into his arms. "

  • Farewell, Dad   Chapter 6

My birthday ten years ago was probably the most unforgettable day of my life. It was also the day Angeline came to live with us. She was the daughter of one of Dad's old comrades from the army, and after both her parents died, she'd been entrusted to his care.Actually, Angeline's birthday wasn't the same day as mine. She was two months younger. But she'd said she wanted a fresh start, that coming to our family was like being reborn, so she'd simply decided to share my birthday from then on.I still remembered the quiet resilience in her eyes back then. I'd made a private vow to myself that I'd always treat her well.It took her almost no time at all to win over every heart in our family of three.Mom had died young, and for years, Dad had played both parents at once. My brother, Dennis Marlon, was already an adult by then, a police officer just like Dad.That year, on my birthday, I'd wanted to buy a cake for Angeline too, something to make her feel the warmth of a real family.

  • Farewell, Dad   Chapter 5

Dad brought Angeline home from the hospital. It turned out to be nothing more than a stomachache from something she'd eaten. The whole way home, he kept lecturing her about staying away from street food and eating properly. But when it came to me, he never gave it a second thought. Whenever he handed Angeline spending money, there was never a share for me. Even the allowance I was supposed to get for school, he'd hand to Angeline to pass along, and she never once gave me a cent of it.I'd tried hinting to Dad that I was short on money. His cold reply had drained every bit of hope out of me. He'd said, "Why is it always you who's running short? It's the same amount of money. Why is it always enough for Angeline? You think we're some rich family that can afford you throwing cash around like this?"Of course it was enough for Angeline. She was spending both her share and mine. After that, Dad just blocked my number outright.Left with no other choice, I'd taken odd jobs and picke
