Chapter 7

Author: Rui Rui
Matthew's POV

After taking care of Ruth, Matthew mobilized every resource the Gambino family had to find Sarah. FBI informants. The entire East Coast intelligence network. Federal government contacts. All of it.

But nothing turned up.

No exit records. No bank statements. Every credit card in her name sat dormant. Her social media accounts hadn't been updated since the engagement night. It was like she'd been wiped from a higher-dimensional system—clean, no trace, no residue.

  • Farewell, My Don   Chapter 8

Seven months later. On the outskirts of Paris, a medical research center ringed by high walls and electronic fencing.I'd just stepped out of the sterile lab, still in my white coat, when my phone buzzed. A message from my mentor: Core research team meeting at three. An important donor will be present.I replied "Got it," pocketed the phone, and kept sorting through the day's experimental data.At 2:55, I walked into the conference room with my coffee, found a seat in the back corner. The main screen displayed a remote feed—the donor wasn't attending in person. Just video. And then I saw his face.Matthew Gambino. He looked thinner. Cheekbones sharper, eyes hollowed out, his suit hanging loose off his shoulders. But those dark green eyes, sweeping across the screen, were exactly the same as I remembered.Applause filled the room. The director stood at the podium, warmly introducing the "philanthropist"—six months of effort, billions of dollars, nearly half his family's assets, all pour

Matthew sat in his study, stacks of useless reports spread before him. The bandage was still wrapped around his hand—the cuts from the shattered glass had barely scabbed over. "A living person can't just vanish into thin air."He'd been in that room for two days. Empty coffee cups piled on the desk, refilled and gone cold, not a single sip taken. Outside the window, New York's sky had turned gray three times and black three times. He hadn't drawn the curtains. He hadn't turned on a light. He pressed h

  • Farewell, My Don   Chapter 6

Matthew's POVMatthew stormed into Ruth's apartment. The rain was still coming down.Ruth pulled the door open. When she saw him, a wild flash of joy lit up her eyes. She was still lost in the fantasy of becoming the next Donna. "Matthew, are you here to take me home? I knew you—"Before she could finish, a slap cracked across her face. She slammed into the doorframe, her cheek swelling instantly.Matthew stepped inside, soaked through with rain and cold. He didn't turn on the lights. Just stood in the shadow of the entryway, those green eyes colder than the night outside.Ruth clutched her face, braced herself against the wall, her voice shaking. "Matthew, what the hell are you—""What the fuck gave you the nerve to send her those photos?"Ruth's pupils shrank. But she swallowed her panic fast. "What are you talking about? I didn't do anything. Did Sarah misunderstand something—""Misunderstand?" Matthew pulled the plastic bag from his pocket and threw it at her feet. The screen glowe

  • Farewell, My Don   Chapter 5

Matthew's POVAfter Ruth's prenatal checkup, Matthew ran into Sarah's cousin, Barbara. She'd just flown in from London and hadn't told Sarah yet."Congratulations. Heard you two got engaged." Barbara smiled and handed him a glass. "My sister takes relationships seriously. Always has."Matthew nodded, returned a polite smile."But she's got one flaw." Barbara took a sip, casual. "She hates lies. Hates betrayal. Cross that line, and she'll walk out on you."Matthew's smile froze for a split second. He raised his glass and said nothing.Barbara seemed to remember something, set her glass down. "I've been meaning to ask—where are you from? Your accent sounds familiar."Matthew threw out the name of a small Sicilian town.Barbara's eyes lit up. She slapped the table. "No way! My sister and I grew up there."She pulled out her phone, scrolled to an old faded photo, and handed it over. Two little girls squatting in front of a stone house. The family crest on the gate in the background—Matthew

I was taken to a private hospital in the city. When I woke up again, it was the next morning. The doctor stood at the foot of the bed, clipboard in hand. She looked at me, kept her voice flat."I'm sorry, ma'am. The baby didn't make it."I placed my hand over my stomach. Nothing there anymore.I lowered my head. Tears blurred everything in front of me.Baby. Mommy's sorry.Tears hit the blanket.I looked up at the doctor. "Please don't let anyone know about this. Act like this child never existed."The doctor didn't ask questions. She just nodded.Matthew didn't show up until noon. He pushed the door open and walked in, still wearing yesterday's wrinkled shirt. He sat down by the bed. First thing out of his mouth:"Why didn't you answer your phone? Why'd you go to a hospital so far away? Took me forever to find you."I didn't say anything."Didn't I tell you not to wander off?"I looked at him. No expression on my face."Phone died. My fault."He paused, like my answer caught him off g

The next morning, Matthew packed his things and said to me:"Sarah, get ready. We're heading out this afternoon.""Where to?""Out of town. Need to check a shipment. Thought I'd take you along for some fresh air."His voice was soft, gentle. I said okay. That afternoon, Matthew came to pick me up. He was driving himself. The passenger seat was empty. I opened the door, sat down, and buckled up.Through the rearview mirror, I saw Ruth's car following behind us, two car lengths back."Who's that?" I asked."Ruth. She brokered the deal on that shipment. She needs to be there.""Mm."The car left the city and wound up the mountain road. The trees grew thicker on both sides. The air outside the window shifted from the city's haze to the damp cool of the woods. Matthew kept one hand on the wheel, the other reaching over to squeeze my fingers before pulling back.At a clearing halfway up the mountain, Matthew parked. He said he needed to go into the woods to inspect the goods and told me to l
