Chapter 4

Author: Roaring River
"Because I'm the one Aaron can't stop thinking about," Grace said, as she looked straight at me, her tone laced with mockery. "I went through so much trouble to set that fire… What a shame you're too tough to die."

My heart sank. So that fire… it was her doing.

"You're not afraid I'll go to the police?" I asked.

Grace gave a cold laugh, perfectly at ease. "Do you have any proof?"

Then she tilted her head, almost dreamily. "From the moment I first saw Aaron, I knew—he was the one I'd been waiting for. And he knows it too. I'm the main character in his life. No one else will do. With him protecting me, I have nothing to worry about."

I knew she wasn't lying. I went silent.

Aaron had fallen so deeply for her, it was like he'd been placed under a spell. He could leave behind a partner who once fought by his side. He could travel across the world just to see her smile. He could abandon me for her—without hesitation.

Her eyes flicked to the ring on my finger, her expression twisting in disdain. "Aaron gave you that, didn't he? Too bad the diamond's gone. Looks like that ring's as broken as your relationship."

She sneered. "I'd suggest you take the hint and step aside."

Then, almost casually, she rested her hand on her flat stomach—subtle, but enough.

"And I'm pregnant. It's Aaron's. You've been married for years and never once got pregnant. I guess something wasn't working between you two. But that's no surprise. No matter how good something tastes, eat it long enough and it turns bland."

She smiled, eyes glinting with triumph.

"Aaron even told me, holding your hand feels like holding his own."

She burst out laughing, covering her mouth, as if she'd just told the world's most outrageous joke.

I sat there frozen, the pain in my chest growing sharp, needling through bone and breath.

She had slept with Aaron. And now, she was carrying his child.

I stared at her—gloating, gleaming with victory—and spoke each word with a calm, deliberate chill.

"You think being the other woman is something to be proud of? Everyone in this city knows I'm Aaron's legal wife. If I go public with the truth—that you're the one who destroyed my marriage—"

I leaned forward, eyes locked on hers. "What do you think will happen to you and your precious Aaron? You'll be swarmed like rats in the street. And no one will pity you."

Her smile froze. Her eyes narrowed with fury and panic. "You wouldn't dare! Aaron will be furious if you do!"

I smiled sweetly. "Try me."

She shot me one last hateful glare, then turned and left, fuming.

Barely a moment later, she ran into Aaron just outside the door. Her face crumpled like a fragile flower in the rain.

"Aaron," she sniffled, her voice trembling, "I'm so upset… The doctor said that herb would really help my recovery. I was just curious, wanted to see if it worked the way people say… But that woman wouldn't even let me look. Then she yelled at me and threw me out…"

Tears streamed down her face. "I mean, fine, don't give it to me, but why humiliate me like that?"

Aaron's face darkened instantly. "Who would dare treat you like that? I'll handle it."

He grabbed her hand and stormed back toward my hospital room. "That stupid herb—how much could it possibly be worth? Name your price, I'll double it. You'd better apologize to my woman."

Then the door burst open.

Aaron stepped in, arm still wrapped protectively around Grace.

And there I was, sitting on the hospital bed, quietly cooperating with the nurse as she cleaned the wounds on my body.

Six months later, my company went public.I stood in the center of the celebration, surrounded by a sea of people, their praise flowing endlessly around me. I smiled with the ease of someone who had conquered, who had survived. Champagne glass in hand, I moved gracefully through the crowd, accepting congratulations with a practiced nod and the occasional word of thanks. When my legs began to ache, I slipped away to a quiet corner to rest. That's when I felt it—a gaze, sharp and full of malice, slicing through the hum of laughter and clinking glasses.I turned my head casually, scanning the room, but nothing seemed out of place. And then—just as I looked back—a woman in a server's uniform lunged at me, wild-eyed, a knife clutched in her hand. For a second, I was caught off guard. But instinct took over. I lifted my leg and kicked the knife from her grasp.Almost immediately, my bodyguards emerged from the shadows and restrained her. I looked down to see who it was.Grace.I ha

I heard that the last time, when Grace was pregnant, she wasn't satisfied with how her engagement party had turned out. So she clung to Aaron, pestering him until he finally agreed to throw her a grand wedding ceremony. He couldn't say no. He never could with her. They say the event was lavish—every big name in the circle showed up. The union of two powerful families was celebrated like a fairytale come true, drawing in blessings from every corner. As for me and Aaron—our past had already faded into oblivion. No one remembered. That was just as well. If I could help it, I didn't want to have anything to do with them ever again. I had no desire to become anyone's gossip topic over tea.Everyone makes mistakes when they're young. I could carry that weight—and I could set it down. After spending some time sorting out the asset division, I moved my company into a newly purchased five-story penthouse. Then I threw myself into work. No distractions. Just steady, focused expansion. Two

Seeing the anger and disbelief in my eyes, Aaron must've realized just how far he'd crossed the line. He panicked, stumbling toward me, unsure of what to do with his hands. "Audrey, are you okay?"But before I could answer, Grace stepped out from behind him, her voice dripping with triumph as she looked down at me. "I told you—Aaron will always be on my side.""Is that so?"I glanced at the two of them, my voice cold. I wanted to ask her: if Aaron really loved her so much, why hadn't he divorced me yet?But I didn't want to waste my breath arguing. Why should I care anymore?Still, I couldn't swallow the fury in my chest. I wasn't going to let them walk away without consequences."Kathy," I said calmly, "Call the police. Attempted arson. Multiple injuries. And attempted murder.""Audrey, do you have to be so aggressive?" Aaron interrupted, visibly upset. "Grace was just overwhelmed. It's all been a misunderstanding. Why won't you let it go? Don't be unreasonable."His eyes were

"She graduated not long ago," Aaron said. "Got into a fight with her dad, said she wanted to be independent. She was on her own, and I was worried. So… I arranged for her to work at the company."The speech he gave at the university—that was two years ago.So they'd been in contact all this time. Behind my back. Clinging to each other shamelessly. And all this, Aaron had hidden so flawlessly.I couldn't understand—was the pull of some "script" truly so irresistible?I had done everything I could. Every calculated move, every carefully constructed plan to avoid their paths crossing. But none of it mattered. In the end, I still couldn't stop them from meeting. And I definitely couldn't stop them from falling, hopelessly and recklessly, in love.As a power CEO, Aaron had countless ways to arrange a job for someone like her.But instead, he did it himself—personally. That meant he couldn't let her go. That he didn't trust anyone else to take care of her.And so, under my nose, the

"Audrey?!" Aaron instinctively let go of Grace's hand, staring at me in disbelief. "You're hurt?"His expression didn't look like he was lying—but to me, it was almost laughable. We were husband and wife, yet he knew nothing about what had happened to me."We were at the same fire scene. How do you think I got injured?"When the shelves collapsed, I didn't even hesitate. I had shielded him without a second thought. If it hadn't been for me, the one lying in this hospital bed would've been him.Aaron's face paled. He rushed to my bedside, eyes scanning my injuries in panic. My wound had torn open again—bloody and gruesome. He looked heartbroken, trembling as he reached out but didn't dare touch me, afraid to make it worse."Audrey, Grace was hurt too, and I—I panicked. I wasn't thinking."There it was. Grace. So familiar. So intimate.Even with me right in front of him, he didn't bother to hold back. Or maybe he simply didn't think he needed to.I gave him a hollow, mocking s
