Natalie

“And you just took his word for it?” Lisa snapped, her voice climbing in panic. “Don’t you get it, Nat? He probably knewI’d talk to you. He told you his version before I could.”

She was spiraling, and I had to grab her shoulders and shake her gently to bring her back.

“Lisa. Look at me.”

She blinked, startled by the firmness in my voice.

“If what you’re saying is true—if Adrian really is the monster you think—then why didn’t he take me already? Why didn’t he turn me? He had the chance. He could’ve done anything he wanted back at the cabin. But he didn’t.”

She opened her mouth, but I didn’t let her speak.

“He didn’t have to drive me here. He didn’t have to let me see you. Just like you’re choosing to trust Carson and Grant, I’m choosing to trust Adrian. I don’t have anything left to lose, Lisa. My uncle—he’s made it very clear. He’s ready to hand me over to them like I’m nothing. There’s no safe road for me anymore. I’m choosing the one that doesn’t lead straight to a cage.”

NatalieLisa’s eyes darted to the car behind me, her face paling. “You brought him,” she whispered, voice brittle with fear.“He’s not coming in,” I said quickly. “And I’m not staying the night.”She stepped back, shutting the door and locking it with a sharp click. “You shouldn’t go back with him, Natalie. You don’t understand—he’s not human.” Her words trembled on the edge of panic.I said nothing. Just watched her.She stared at me like I was the one who needed convincing. “Did you hear me? He’s not human.”“I heard you,” I said evenly. “But you were about to say more. What else do you know?”Lisa hesitated. Her lip quivered, and her arms crossed tightly over her chest. “I’m not messing around, Nat. That meet-and-greet? It was crawling with them. Vampires, Strigois, whatever. The same things Alester rants about. Adrian—he’s one of them. A monster.”I studied her face. “Why are you so focused on Adrian?”“Because Grant told me everything,” she snapped, like the name was supposed

  • Fated In Darkness   80 Blackgate

NatalieAs we passed the cracked wooden sign that read Welcome to Blackgate Village, a tight knot formed in my stomach. We were here. The drive had taken two hours—three if you counted the stop Adrian and I made. I wished we were still back in the cabin, tangled in blankets and blind to everything I’d learned since. But that world was gone. Torn open. And Lisa needed me.So here we were.We pulled up to a checkpoint manned by three large men who looked more like enforcers than guards. Broad shoulders. Cold eyes. The kind of muscle that didn’t flinch before breaking bones. I wasn’t sure if they were criminals or just wolves—but either way, they made my skin crawl.Adrian stayed calm. Completely unfazed.“State your purpose, Lord Balshov,” one of them said as we came to a stop.Adrian leaned slightly toward the window, voice measured. “We’re here to see a human hiding in this village. She called us.”The man shook his head, firm. “The access granted is for a Natalie Pierce. No one else.

Natalie“So I was just supposed to be a baby machine?” I snapped, anger surging up my throat like bile. The thought of Uncle Mike arranging this—offering me up like livestock—made me sick.Adrian shook his head quickly. “No. It’s not that simple.”He glanced at me, voice low but steady. “For a Strigoi to have a child, he has to bond with a mate. That bond—it’s eternal. Irrevocable. There’s no walking away from it once it’s made.”His hand found my thigh, warm and gentle. Grounding me.“That’s why my father resisted bonding with my mother. Her body rejected the venom—but she didn’t die. That terrified him. Mating with her meant if she ever died, he’d be alone. Forever. That’s the kind of curse love becomes for someone like him.”I stared out the windshield, letting it sink in. It wasn’t just about reproduction. It was ownership. Permanence. A life sentence disguised as tradition.“You wouldn’t have been a baby machine,” Adrian continued softly. “You would’ve been a Strigoi’s mate. Chos

Natalie“Will it always be like this?” I asked, my voice low. Vulnerable.Adrian let out a breath and glanced at me. “I’ll control it,” he said softly. “I swear, Natalie. I’d never do anything to you that you didn’t want.”That promise settled into me like warmth, but I had more questions. “Does it hurt?”His gaze flicked to the road again. “No,” he said. “Not if it’s done right. It’s... the opposite, actually. Intense. Intimate. My saliva dulls the pain and heightens—well, everything else.”I frowned. “Wait... doesn’t that mean it could turn me?”He laughed gently, shaking his head. “No. That’s a whole different process.”I shifted in the seat, adjusting the oversized shirt and shorts that clung to me like memories of the cabin. I hadn’t planned to leave like this—but how could I blame him? He didn’t expect Blackgate to crash into our night like a storm.“I’ve got time,” I said, looking at him. “Tell me.”He smiled, his hand sliding onto my thigh with a tenderness that made my pulse

  • Fated In Darkness   77 Choosing To Trust

NatalieFear clawed at my chest like a living thing. That’s the only way to describe it. Adrian had confirmed it—everything Professor Alester Nighthorn said was real. And worse, he was part of it.That truth hit me like a punch to the gut. I panicked, because what else could I do? But then I looked at Adrian—really looked—and I saw something that shook me even more than the revelation.Desperation.In those sharp, haunted eyes was a man teetering on the edge. A man who could crush mountains if he wanted to—but right now, he was terrified. Not of me. For me. Of losing me. And that’s when I knew: he wasn’t going to hurt me. I could feel it in my bones. I mattered to him. That had to mean something. So I made a choice. Maybe a reckless one. Maybe the biggest mistake of my life. But I chose to trust him. I chose to believe that the monster wasn’t the whole of him—and maybe, just maybe, the part of him that still held on to his humanity was worth loving.Besides… if I was doomed to fall fo

Adrian“I’m not a full-blooded Strigoi,” I said softly, desperate for her to see me—not the creature she feared, but the man still standing before her. “The reason I’m different is because I have a soul. And you, Natalie… you share that soul with me.”She froze, her breath catching, her eyes red and wet.“I’ve never connected with anyone—not like this. Not ever. Before you, I thought I’d wander through eternity alone. But then you happened to me. That afternoon in the woods… when I saw you—it was like something ancient snapped into place. It was written in the stars. You are mine… and I am yours.”I stepped closer, my voice breaking.“Please… don’t be afraid of me.”There was a long pause. Her shoulders trembled, but then she wiped her tears roughly with the back of her hand. She turned, walked past me, back toward the car.“Take me to Lisa,” she said.Just like that.It should’ve felt like a win. Like a crack in the wall she’d just built between us. But it didn’t. It felt cold. Final

Adrian“How are you able to walk in the sun? You eat, right?” Natalie’s voice wavered, clinging to logic like it might save her.She was trying to make sense of something that defied everything she’d ever known. Trying to convince herself this was all a joke. But it wasn’t.I shook my head, gently. “It’s real, Natalie. All of it.”“Dimitri?” she asked, voice barely a whisper.“A Strigoi like my father,” I confirmed. “No sunlight. No food.”She screamed again—high and panicked—and took another step back. The terror on her face gutted me. Every word I said carved deeper into that innocence I swore to protect.“The people at the ball,” she gasped, “were they the loyalists? The vampire-human servants Alester talked about?”I nodded. “Yes. Others you saw are prospectives—training for loyalty or protection.”She shook her head violently. “No. No, Adrian. Tell me it isn’t true. That this is just some twisted prank. Maybe Alester messing with me again, trying to push one of his myth agendas—”

AdrianI exhaled slowly, staring into her eyes, hoping she could see it—me. My heart, my soul. Everything I was, laid bare in a single look.“Once we cross into Blackgate,” I said, voice low, “I won’t be able to move freely anymore. It’s wolf territory.”She frowned, not quite understanding. Her confusion etched across her face like a question she hadn’t yet found the words for.“There’s something about me… something about this world your parents tried to shield you from,” I continued, and her eyes searched mine, trying to find something solid to hold onto. But I wasn’t done.“I was hoping Professor Alester might’ve given you a crash course,” I added, half-laughing at the thought. “But I guess he failed you there.”She gave a nervous chuckle. “Alester? The guy who specializes in terrifying first-years with campfire stories and urban legends? What exactly was he supposed to teach me?”I gave her a nod, acknowledging the absurdity—at least from her side of the veil.My fingers brushed t
