“Ask,” I prompted her. “Ask whatever you want to know.”

She straightened, and her eyes sharpened. “I want to know everything, from the beginning. If there’s any chance we work together, I need to know what’s real and what isn’t.”

I nodded, tensing slightly. I’d known this was coming. Still, it didn’t make it easier.

Ashina exhaled, most likely noting the way I’d tensed up. “Back to this? You used to be better at sharing.”

“With you,” I said quietly. “Only you.” I didn’t say the rest; that losing her had stripped that ability from me.

Her eyes softened, just a touch, as if she didn’t need me to say it because she already knew that.

“Why did you reject me before you died?” she asked. “You said you were saving me. From what?”

I drew in a slow breath. My fingers tightened slightly on the edge of t

As I entered the lobby, past the empty reception desk, the memory of the last time I’d walked in here snagged at the edge of my senses. I’d strode in with determination to clear my meeting and had stopped short at the familiar scent I’d caught a whiff of. For the first heartbeat that followed, I thought my mind was playing tricks on me.After the news that she had died, I’d caught her scent at unsuspecting places. But that was at the beginning when the grief was the hardest. None of it had been recent, so catching that same one that I knew was unmistakably hers was like a cruel twist of fate. And so I couldn’t help myself as I paused and turned in the direction from which it was coming, following it like a possessed man.I ignored the surprised calls for my attention from Dawn and Tyro. And the moment my eyes landed on her, my heart had nearly stopped. This person who looked so much like Ashina was just a few feet from me and was very much

“You don’t have to go,” Dain muttered the moment I dropped the call as he watched me with quiet disapproval in his face.I didn’t stop moving around, brushing past the rising weight in my chest. “I told you, I need to talk to him. I need to understand what’s going on.”He didn’t argue again. Just watched me with that familiar concern that always made my throat tighten. I slung a bag over my shoulder and turned to Maya’s chamber. The moment I stepped closer, my chest cracked open with a silent ache.My fingers hovered against the glass, brushing it gently like I could reach her soul through it.“I’m going to fix this,” I whispered. “I promise.”Dain shifted to stand beside me, staring at Maya too, before huffing a deep breath and turning to me. “Let me drop you off,” he offered gently. “You shouldn’t have to go alone.I paused at the thought. There was no need for him to remain in the lab if I was going to go out of it after all. So it made sense for him to offer.“But I’ll have to rep

My heart slammed wildly in my chest. Kael?! How the hell did he get my number? And why the hell was he calling me now? Before I could think too hard about it, Dain reached over and plucked the phone right out of my hand."What do you think you're doing?" I snapped, my voice coming out sharper than I intended.Dain didn’t flinch. His thumb hovered just above the decline button as he responded calmly. “If you don’t want to answer," he said, eyes locked on mine with concern, "you don’t have to. You shouldn’t if you’re not ready. I don’t know everything going on right now, but you know you’ve always been my priority. I can handle everything if you need me to."My throat constricted. This was Dain. Steady, loyal Dain. Even though Kael was his friend first, he’d always stood by me. Even if it meant pissing Kael off.But that loyalty wasn’t enough now. Not when he didn’t k

At some point in my downward spiral, my legs had given way, and Dain had rushed forward to catch me before I could hit the ground. His hands were steady, despite the restraints, and warm against my arms. The contact startled me back into myself, and I jerked away quickly, shaking him off."I don’t need your help," I muttered, backing away, more from myself than from him.So what if he was right and they thought I was dead like I did, and that’s why I’d been left alone in this world to fend for myself, and Kael hadn’t actually rejected me because he was fed up with me. None of that mattered. That was then. This was now.Things had changed, each and every one of our circumstances. And my situation now couldn’t afford to get distracted, not when Maya’s life was still dangling in the balance. She was the priority. The only thing that mattered. And if there was a cure for what was happening to her, I needed to get my

My words must have hit the mark right at the center with the way her jaw clenched and her hands twitched like she wanted to rip something in half.Bringing war to herself was the last thing Dr. Veyra wanted. She stood stiffly, staring at the console. As much as she didn’t want any kind of war, she didn’t like the idea that the Alpha, acting or not, of Silverclaw had found the lairs of her lab.Her body shook with the anger she could barely contain. This was the most uncomposed I’d ever seen her, it was nerve-wracking."Dammit,” she muttered, swearing under her breath. “Of all the cursed wolves in the world, it had to be the acting Alpha of Silverclaw, huh? What the hell does he want with my lab? I’ve never even brushed their radar."I didn’t know the answer to that either, but I had a feeling we were about to find out."So what, we just leave him out there?" Veyra snapped. "Because we’re scared of a little war?""That’s what we have to find out,” I tried to patronize, my heart skippin
