Matthias's jaw clenched, and Ronan felt a twisted satisfaction at the way his father's scent spiked with impotent rage. He'd never been more pleased as he was at that moment, he couldn’t care less how Killian had managed to gain access to that information, all he knew was that Matthias couldn't outrightly defend his lover without revealing why he cared so much.

"Raine broke pack law," Matthias said finally, his voice carefully controlled, Ronan rolled his eyes with a scoff. "The Elders made their decision based on the evidence presented."

"Oh is that so?" Killian's eyes glittered dangerously, and Ronan got the feeling that he knew more about this entire thing than he was letting on. "Because it seems like she just happened to be caught in a crossfire.” His gaze flickered between Ronan and Matthias, and something in Ronan’s gut clenched uncomfortably. Killian did know something more than he was saying. “A little spat,” he continued, “Between son and father, seems almost territorial

The footsteps she'd been hearing in her imagination turned out to be real. Raine was still sitting on the floor among the broken porcelain when the door opened, letting in a gust of cold air that made her shiver. She looked up to see Killian silhouetted in the doorway, snow dusting his dark coat like scattered stars. "Raine." His voice was soft, concerned, exactly the tone of a man who cared about her wellbeing. She did not buy it for a second, especially after hearing what Selene had to say. "What happened here?" She scrambled to her feet, her heart hammering against her ribs. How long had it been since Selene left? An hour? Two? Time had become meaningless after the revelations about dead brothers and confessions of meaningless murder. She glanced around for a broomstick and pan, trying to avoid meeting Killian’s gaze for as long as she could manage. "I dropped my teacup," she said, the lie falling from her lips with practiced ease. "Very clumsy of me." Killian's eyes swept th

The fire had long since burned low in the fireplace, but Matthias hadn’t moved from his seat. Ash curled at the edges of the logs, glowing faint and red in the dim light, casting the room in low, rust-colored shadows. Outside, the wind howled against the slatted glass, a cruel, high-pitched sound that seemed to echo the pressure in his chest. He sat still, one boot braced on the edge of the hearthstone, one hand slack in his lap, the other resting heavily around the throat of a half-drained bottle of dark liquor he couldn’t remember opening. It was hours past midnight, and he couldn’t sleep. How could he? His last surviving son seemed to hate him now, and he deserved it, goddess knew he did. It had been well over a month now, and he still hadn’t made an headway in finding Silas’s killers. He was a failure of a father, he’d failed both sons and now he was about to fail his pack. But to be honest none of that mattered to him in the face of his newest, most pressing grief. Raine was

The attack was clumsy, telegraphed, driven more by emotion than strategy. Killian caught Ronan’s wrist without much effort, his grip like iron around fragile bone. For a moment he considered breaking it, that would certainly send a message about the consequences of challenging him, but Killian decided against it. Injured pawns were less useful than frightened ones. "Careful," he warned, letting a hint of his real power seep into his voice. "You're in no position to make physical threats. Not when I hold so many of your secrets." He could feel Ronan's pulse hammering against his fingers, could smell the spike of adrenaline and fear. The younger alpha was learning, finally, what it meant to be completely at someone else's mercy. Killian released him and stepped back, straightening his coat with deliberate precision. "Besides, we still have work to do. Your father may suspect your involvement in pack politics, but he doesn't yet know the scope of our alliance. That gives us time to co

Killian got the message some minutes after he sent Hansel home, the witch grumbled under his breath, complaining about a wasted time, Killian remained quiet, saying nothing as he watched a familiar black bird draw closer and closer until it landed in his palm. There was a note attached to it’s claws, he didn’t even have to read the signage to know it was from Ronan, he wanted to meet, at a remote location. How very predictable. Killian smelled Ronan's fear the moment he stepped into their meeting place—an old storage building, just a few miles away from Draven pack territory. The scent hung in the air like smoke, acrid and bitter, mixing with the younger alpha's natural scent until the combination was almost nauseating. Twenty minutes had passed since the delicious scene in Matthias's office, and Ronan's hands were still shaking. Killian allowed himself a moment of satisfaction as he took in the sight, the Draven heir reduced to a trembling mess, hiding in an abandoned building lik

The collision sent them both crashing to the ground, heads thudding against the roots of the heavy oak tree behind them, leaves scattering like frightened birds as Matthias's hands found Ronan's throat. The older alpha's eyes had gone completely feral, pupils dilated with rage, and for one terrifying moment Ronan thought his father might actually kill him. "You piece of shit," Matthias snarled, his grip tightening. "You don't get to talk about her like that. You don't get to—" Ronan drove his knee upward, catching his father in the ribs and breaking the hold. They rolled apart, both breathing hard, circling each other like the predators they were. Blood trickled from a cut on Ronan's cheek where his father's claws had raked across skin. "Like what?" Ronan spat, wiping the blood away with the back of his hand. "Like the whore she is? Like the betrayer who spread her legs for her mate's father?" Matthias lunged again, but this time Ronan was ready. He caught his father's wrist, twis

The teacup slipped from Raine's fingers at the words that left the Luna’s mouth, shattering against the floor in and spraying hot liquid everywhere, but she barely felt the sting as she stared at Selene, waiting for some indication that this was another of the Voss family's cruel games, but Selene's expression remained perfectly serene, as if she hadn’t just confessed to the mass murder of her older siblings. "You seem surprised," Selene observed, making no move to help clean up the mess. "Did you think Magnus, Caspar, and Dmitri simply... vanished? All our sisters? Did you think they all decided to just take extended vacations from pack leadership?" Raine's mouth opened and closed soundlessly. The journal had prepared her for this possibility, but hearing it stated so matter-of-factly made her stomach lurch with nausea that had nothing to do with her pregnancy. "Why are you telling me this?" she finally managed. "Because I think you deserve to know exactly who you're trusting wit
