Alicia’s POV

The oak tree was my sanctuary. The thick branches shaded me from the sun like a canopy, casting dappled patterns of light across the grass and my lap.

My bare feet lay tucked on the velvet blanket I had laid out, while a young maid knelt dutifully beside me, massaging peppermint oil into my feet.

Asides from dealing with my enemies I enjoy reading books, especially politics though.

I didn’t acknowledge the maid, My mind was too deep in Niccolò Machiavelli’s The Prince.

“In the actions of all men… when there is no court of appeal, one judges by the result,” I whispered aloud, letting the words hang heavy in the air.

Machiavelli got it. Results were all that mattered. Not kindness. Just victory.

There was this thrill in studying his words, a kind of illicit intimacy with power that resonated deep in my bones and blood.

It was as if he had written this book for people like me.

“‘It is better to be feared than loved,’” I quoted next, glancing at the young maid.

Elysia’s POV“I won’t sit in this house and wait for them to return.” I said as I stood up, standing at the edge of the bed. My clothes and other necessary items were neatly arranged inside my bag.Aunt Liora stood quietly behind me, her eyes red and swollen. Her arms were folded across her breast, seems like she was holding her grief. “This is my home,” she whispered, he eyes teary. “My husband built this house for me with his hands. Elysia I can’t leave just like that.”“But Lila is not here anymore,” I interrupted trying to be polite, turning to face her. “And we don’t know what else is coming. Aunt Liora, please. Please we got to go.”She looked at me, our gaze meeting. “You are right Elysia but…” she paused and shook her head in confusion. “I heard her scream early this morning and I failed Elysia. I failed to protect her. It is all my fault.”There was silence for a while. Then Aunt Liora closed her eyes. When she opened them again, she looked around the house one last time an

Elysia’s POVI tossed around the creaky bed, my watery eyes fluttering open in the dark room. The silence that surrounded the house was comforting. Aunt Liora had slept early that night. She was probably exhausted from probably worrying about moving into the pack.I had noticed she had been restless ever since I brought up the idea of moving. Lila had protested too, saying she didn’t want to leave her mom behind, which was fair, and I wasn’t ready to leave them either.I and Lila had spent hours talking about it to Aunt Liora, trying to convince her that staying in her home was dangerous. But she wouldn’t concur. I was still hoping she would change her mind before morning.Meanwhile, I glanced at the clock on the nightstand. It was 2:14 a.m. Then I heard rustling sounds echoing faintly from outside, but my lazy, tired ass wasn’t ready to stand up yet.The noise came again, I could hear it coming from Lila’s room this time, like someone was scattering something.I frowned, probably it

Elysia’s POVThe wind outside carried the faint scent of pine and something else, like rain that is about to come.I stood by the window, crossing my arms, watching Lila pace the small yard behind the house. Her feet dragged slowly over the grass and her face facing the groud. She had been moody all morning. Neither had I and she hadn’t spoken to a soul since she woke up.“Aunt Liora,” I said quietly, my voice low not turning from the window, “we need to talk.”However, She didn’t respond right away. I could hear her in the kitchen, the faint clinking of spoons and the kettle whistling softly. I turned around when she finally spoke. “You’ve been restless since the attack,” she said, wiping her hands on a small yellow towel.I stepped into the kitchen, my heart heavy. “We all need to start preparing.”Aunt Liora raised an eyebrow staring at me. “Preparing? What for?”I took a deep breath. “I think we need to move back to the pack, at least until we are sure Jason and his rogues are no

Adrain’s POVI was already halfway to the gates when the guard patrol linked me through a mind link: “Alpha, you asked to be informed the moment any vehicle or the first delivery approached the border.I tightened my grip around my phone and placed it close to my chest. “Good stop them. No vehicles must pass until I give orders to let them go. There had been too many issues going on. Rogue attack, Elysia’s call about Jason. So today, I needed to be really sure no unknown person is trying to slip in the pack. The gate came into view, towering and reinforced, flanked by two scouts and a junior officer. A line of three armored cars waiting outside, their engines rumbling softly. The first was from a supply vendor that usually passes almost every single day. Still, no vehicle would move until I was damn satisfied.I motioned for the first vehicle to pull forward and I approached the driver’s side, bending a bit to look at the driver. “Step out.”The man: lanky, looked like he was in his

Adrain’s POVThe sun had barely risen when my phone buzzed on the table beside my bed. Well, I ignored it at first, thinking it was Kyle checking in early like he always did. I was weak and wasn’t really to start anything early this morning. But then, it buzzed again, longer this time, the name lighting up across the screen. It was Elysia.I sat up and answered immediately, “Elysia?” My early morning voice deep and husky. Her voice came sharp through the line and automatically I knew something was wrong. And guess I will find out now.“Adrian. Someone named Jason, he came to the house and he grabbed Lila yesterday. Almost knocked her down.”I jumped out of the bed immediately. “Wait what, who is he?”“I didn’t know who he was at first,” she continued quickly. “But he claims to be the father of her child. Then he said things that made it clear he was connected to the rogues in some way. He said more rogues will come your way, he is obviously sending them.”My jaw clenched as I paced
