The cabin felt smaller at night.

The barrier outside hummed like a living thing, faint but constant, pressing against my senses. It was easier when Elias was asleep. Easier to pretend I wasn’t hyperaware of him in the same confined space.

But he wasn’t asleep now.

He stood near the narrow window, moonlight cutting across the sharp planes of his face. His arms were crossed over his chest, shoulders broad, posture rigid with contained thought.

He had been quiet for too long.
