I had been patient. More patient than I wanted to admit. I had reminded myself of Yvonne’s advice, about trust, vulnerability, about giving and sacrifice. I had told myself Lucian wasn’t a soldier to command, and I couldn’t treat him like one.

But patience, apparently, had limits I hadn’t known existed until that morning.

I entered the training room, and even before I said anything, I could tell something was wrong. Lucian was there, of course … stretched out lazily on the mats like he had nowhere else to be. But his focus? Not on me. Not on the exercises. Not on the exercises that would, if he would just try, align our powers enough to function as a bonded pair. No. His gaze kept wandering to the window, to some pointless corner of the room, anywhere but where it needed to be.

“Lucian,” I said, voice low but sharp.

He blinked, startled, and sat up halfway. “Hmm?”

“Stop wasting time,” I said, stepping closer. “Focus. Concentrate. Now.”
