Chapter 2

Author: Pacha Lavigne
Lucien suddenly shoved me away and closed one hand around my throat.

"Why should I believe you?" he said coldly. "If the curse is not contained, I may die. You risk nothing but a few shameless jokes. Are you a spy sent by the holy orders?"

He released me, then searched me from head to toe with ruthless speed.

"No one has ever neutralized my lust-curse," he said. "Every month, a hundred women must sacrifice their lives, or the curse tears me apart. What sorcery did you use to withstand it?"

He found nothing.

Of course he found nothing. There was no charm, no medicine, no talisman. I was simply feeding on the curse he thought would kill me.

"I do not know," I said innocently. "Maybe I fell in love at first sight. Maybe we were lovers for several lifetimes. Why not believe that?"

I blinked up at him.

Succubi had their methods. One look, one softened breath, one little pout, and even the Demon King himself looked away.

"Who sent you?" he demanded, though his voice was not as steady as before. "What kind of lie is that?"

"If you do not trust me, Your Majesty can keep looking for the other ninety-nine. But I will say this first: if I prove I can bear your curse, you may not let anyone else have you."

I traced circles against his chest.

"Give me a chance, Your Majesty."

Lucien caught my wandering hand. His breathing was heavier now, his eyes flickering like coals.

"Fine," he said. "You will be the first. But understand this. The curse is fatal. If you are lying, you will be the first to die."

I melted toward him like warm sugar. "I understand perfectly."

Fatal? It was a feast. I could have devoured him whole.

Lucien looked at me like I was an exotic creature he had found in the forest.

"What kind of woman says such things with a straight face?" he muttered. "Are the holy orders trying a new tactic?"

It seemed no woman had ever been warm with him before. Yet he was undeniably gorgeous. A man like this—if not for his violent temper and the curse riding his body—would have had women fighting over him.

I stared at him for too long, savoring the sharp sweetness of the curse rolling off his skin. He turned away first.

"We will see how long you can pretend."

He swept out with his robes flying. His back looked imposing, but I saw the slight stumble in his steps and the red at the tips of his ears.

"Put her in the east wing," he ordered. "First room."

I called after him, "Wait. Your Majesty, I want to keep my friend with me. But can you exempt her from the consort registry? You only need me, right?"

Lucien paused and looked between me and Elodie for several seconds.

"Granted."

Once we were taken to our room, Elodie and I jumped in place with our hands clasped together. Halfway through, she stopped and stared at me with worry.

"Camille, can you really do this? He looks terrifying. His skin is gray, and the whole palace is afraid of him."

"Terrifying?" I laughed. "He is gorgeous. If you are scared, leave him to me.

"When I touch him, my blood heats up and my whole body burns. I think this is what love feels like."

The door opened.

Lucien stood there.

I smiled coldly."Now you know how to beg? Too late. The system gave me the authority. In this world, I hold the highest permission now. Since you made me unhappy, I will leave you here to grow old with your jealousy."She panicked completely."Camille, I was only provoking you. I did not mean any of it. I can wash your feet every night. I will never offend you again.""Where was this humility a moment ago?" I asked. "I thought your bones were too hard for begging."After several more rounds of pleading, she realized I would not bend. Her face twisted again."You think being a succubus makes you special? You were born with it. What do you have that is truly yours? We were friends for years, and you hid something this big from me. You call that friendship?""Why would I tell you?" I said. "In high school, you blamed your plagiarism on me. In college, when you were photographed in a scandal, you insisted the woman in the picture was me. Later, when I had a boyfriend, you ordered h

In the modern world, Elodie had always shoved me out to the front whenever there was a charge to be made.Whenever danger appeared, she pulled me in front of her as a shield. And more than once she sold my secrets, just to line her own pockets.Looking back only now, I finally understood: she had never been my best friend at all. She had been my enemy wearing a friend's face. The doors flew open.Elodie, falling apart, rounded on me. "Are you doing this on purpose? Why did the system favor you? I was the first one to get it. That system is my family's heirloom—I only brought it out to save my mother."She lunged and seized my sleeve."Give it back. Those things are mine. You cannot take them."Why do you always get everything without lifting a finger, while I work myself to the bone and cannot reach even a fraction of what you have? Is this world really so unfair?"I have tried so hard—so why must I just stand here and watch you take everything from me?"Incoherent now, she gr

"Announce it," Lucien said. "Camille Bouchard is to be my queen. From this day forward, no mortal women are to be taken from the human realm."Warmth spread through me.That meant I could keep Lucien all to myself.I looked at his profile, then dragged him right back into the room."Your Majesty," I said, "I have discovered that I cannot live without you."Another night passed in bliss. After that, my life became almost disgracefully comfortable. Most days I either stayed in Lucien's bed or got up only long enough to eat sweets. One afternoon, I found a small notebook hidden in a drawer.Curiosity won. I opened it and discovered page after page of Lucien's secret love journal. He called me "my darling queen" and wrote lines so sentimental that I had to cover my mouth to keep from laughing.Who would have guessed that beneath the cold Demon King exterior was a man this embarrassingly romantic? As I read, the way I thought about him changed little by little. At first, I had t

"Regret?" I wiped at the corner of my mouth. "How could I? I like you even more."The drool probably ruined any attempt at dignity. All his suspicions jammed in his throat."Impossible," he murmured. "You saw this and still look at me like that. Are you truly..."His voice softened."Do you truly like me?"I nodded and kissed him before he could think too much."Your Majesty, you only know that now? I fell for you at first sight."His cold face flushed."You... woman."His body burned against mine, scorching hot, and I could not stop myself from pulling him down and taking him again and again. That night, the attendants waited outside with the ninety-nine other consorts."Your Majesty," one called nervously, "should we send in the rest?"From inside came the sound of overturned furniture, broken screens, and my very satisfied laughter. The waiting consorts began to cry."She is doomed," someone whispered. "No one survives a whole night with him.""The last bodies were t

Through a haze, I heard Lucien's voice."I thought she approached me with ulterior motives," he said hoarsely. "I never imagined she was sincere enough to take an arrow for me."There was so much guilt in his voice that I almost felt embarrassed. The truth was far less noble. I had moved on instinct to protect my newly acquired meal. If Lucien died, I would starve all over again.Unfortunately, the arrow from the holy orders carried a vicious poison. Several times I tried to wake, but my body would not obey.Lucien was close. His curse was close. If he had only touched me, even a little, I might have recovered faster.Yet he refused to come near, probably afraid of harming me.I had no choice but to endure the hunger and sink back into darkness. When I woke again, it was because of pain.Something sharp stabbed into me again and again.I forced my eyes open and heard Elodie's voice, low and furious."I tried three times and failed every time. Why did you get his favor the mo

I froze and glanced at Elodie, who avoided my eyes."In five days," Lucien said, "you will attend the court banquet. Do not embarrass me. In seven days, I will arrange the trial. Then we will see whether your words are true."He lifted his hand to close the door."Seven days?" I asked. "That is too long. What about tonight? Actually, why not now?"Lucien pushed the door back open and stared at me."I have never met a woman like you."I stared at him like a wolf eyeing fresh meat. He flinched under my gaze and hurried out with a flick of his sleeve—not angry, exactly, more like he had run out of options.Elodie stared at the closed door, then at me."Camille, what is your secret? How are you staying so calm around him? I never knew you were this brave."I laughed it off. "Maybe crossing worlds awakened some hidden ability. Do not worry. As long as I have something to eat, you will not be in danger."We had barely rested since arriving in this world, and that night I lay in bed
