Chapter 1

Author: Six Seer
In the Frostfang pack's banquet hall, candlelight cast a reddish glow on the oak long table.

My fingers were turning white as I clenched the hem of my gown, the embroidered silver threads on the fabric digging painfully into my palms.

According to custom, I should be sitting at the head of the table beside Ethan Hawkins right now, receiving the pack's blessings.

But the other side of the main seat was glaringly empty.

Malcolm Tolliver, the butler, said in a trembling voice, "Ms. Blair, Ethan's Beta is here."

Having served my father for many years and watched me grow up, Malcolm's eyes were now filled with pity.

When I looked up, Ethan's Beta, Travis Mercer, had already stepped through the door. A silver emblem of the Bonevein pack was pinned to his suit lapel. The wolf's head on that emblem was something Ethan had personally shown me last year.

"This will be your emblem too from now on," he had said in a tone soft enough to melt, while his fingertips brushed against my earlobe.

Now, he wouldn't even look me in the eye.

Travis pulled a neatly folded paper from his briefcase and slapped it on the table. "Our Alpha says the betrothal party today is canceled."

With a collective gasp, discussions erupted throughout the hall.

A female guest's voice was the loudest. "Canceled? But the time has come. Is he making a fool of the Frostfang pack?"

Her mate chimed in from beside her. "Isn't it because of Lily Bauer? Yesterday, I saw Ethan buying strawberry pastries for her. He queued for half an hour!"

The tips of my ears burned.

A werewolf's sense of smell was three times sharper than a human's. I had already smelled the sweet scent of strawberry pastries on Travis, but I just didn't want to believe it.

My fingertips pressed against the paper, the inked words feeling harsh beneath them. I said hoarsely, "And the reason?"

"Ms. Lily injured her arm with wolfsbane pollen last Monday," Travis replied, pulling out a pink-and-white box. "The Alpha says if you don't apologize to her and send over that necklace she likes, don't even think about this betrothal."

"Bullshit!"

My childhood friend, Mia Patton, shot up from her seat.

"Last week, I was organizing herbs in the apothecary. Lily stole the wolfsbane pollen herself and told Peter Winters she 'wanted to stir up some trouble'. Do you think we're blind?"

Travis frowned and adjusted his tie with a disdainful look. "The Alpha makes his own judgments. It's not your place to comment."

He shoved the strawberry pastries into a server's hands. "These are for Ms. Lily. The Alpha specifically said to eat them while they're warm."

The sound of his footsteps grew fainter as he left. Mia wanted to chase after him, but I grabbed her wrist. My lower lip was already stained with blood.

Werewolves healed quickly, but that bead of blood that clung to my lip didn't fade for a long while.

"Don't go after him," I said softly. "It's not worth it."

As soon as the words left my mouth, the sound of dragging footsteps came from the entrance.

My brother, Ryan Fuller, walked in first. A button on his suit was fastened incorrectly, and his hair was a mess.

Lily followed behind him. She wore a white dress, and there was a bandage on her arm. The moment she entered, she fell to her knees with a thud.

"Blair, I'm sorry…" Her tears fell fast and thick. "I shouldn't have liked that necklace or mentioned it to Ethan. Because of that, no one attended your betrothal party. It's all my fault. Hit me, scold me—do anything you want. Just don't ruin your health by getting angry."

Ryan quickly crouched to help her up, glaring at me. "Lily's already in this state, and you're still scowling? It's just a necklace. What's wrong with letting her have it? Do you have to make our entire pack a laughingstock?"

Looking at Ryan's face, I suddenly found it unfamiliar.

Three years ago, when Lily was first adopted, he had patted my head and said, "Don't be afraid, Blair. I'll protect you."

Now, that same man was protecting an outsider, pointing his finger and yelling at me.

The Night of the Full Moon arrived as scheduled. The Blackwood pack's manor was decorated majestically and romantically. Moongrass wreaths hung along the corridors, and silver candelabras cast warm candlelight, bathing the entire manor in a soft glow.I wore a white gown that had silver wolf patterns embroidered on the hem. Around my neck was the moonstone necklace Kane had given me, complementing the Frostfang pack's token perfectly.Mia helped me adjust my hair, smiling as she said, "Blair, you look so beautiful today.""Really?" I looked at myself in the mirror.Happiness shone in my eyes. It was a state I had never been in before—composed, confident, and filled with the gentleness of being loved."Of course!" Mia nodded. "When Kane sees you, he's sure to be stunned."Just then, Kane pushed the door open. He wore a black tuxedo, and his light-gray hair was neatly styled. His deep brown eyes were full of awe as he walked to me quickly and took my hand. "You're beautiful," he

Ever since Lily's true colors were exposed, Ryan seemed like a different person. He was no longer as impulsive as before.Every day, besides handling pack affairs, he studied management skills with Uncle George. In his free time, he would come to see me at the Blackwood pack and always bring the snacks I loved as a pup.One day, he came to see me again. He held an exquisite wooden box and explained, "Blair, this is the bracelet Mom left for you. I got it back."I opened the box. Inside lay a silver bracelet, engraved with delicate patterns. It was Mom's favorite piece of jewelry when she was alive. When Ryan took it and gave it to Lily back then, I thought I'd never get it back.My voice trembled slightly as I asked, "How did you get it back?""Before Lily was banished, she hid it in her room," Ryan said, sounding guilty. "I found it later when I was sorting through her things. Blair, I'm sorry. I was foolish back then. I shouldn't have casually given away something Mom left for y

After Lily was banished, the Bonevein pack's reputation plummeted. The smaller packs that had previously aligned with them defected one after another, turning to the Blackwood pack. Ethan was faced with an extremely difficult situation. He began to appear frequently near the Frostfang pack, trying to see me, but he was always stopped by Kane's people. Once, he caught us when Mia and I went to the apothecary for herbs."Blair, I have something to say to you." Ethan looked haggard. His eyes were bloodshot, and his suit was wrinkled. He no longer seemed like the confident figure he once was."There's nothing to say between us." I stepped around him, not wanting to get caught up with him."I know I was wrong. I truly do!" Ethan grabbed my wrist, his tone urgent. "I shouldn't have believed Lily's lies! I shouldn't have humiliated you at our betrothal party! I shouldn't have… shouldn't have broken our bond! "Blair, give me another chance, okay? I'll make it up to you. I'll spend a l

Early the next morning, Kane arrived at the Frostfang pack with the Elders of the Blackwood pack in a grand procession to propose to me.Gifts filled the entire courtyard—rare moongrass, specialized anti-silver-poison medicine, and an exquisitely crafted gemstone dagger. This was the highest standard of courtship from a top-tier Alpha to a mate. The entire Frostfang pack was in an uproar, and those who had gossiped about me before now wore expressions of awe.Uncle George personally came out to welcome Kane, grinning from ear to ear. "Mr. Kane, your esteemed presence truly brings honor to our pack.""It's only right." Kane walked to my side and naturally took my hand. "My mate deserves the best."His gesture was natural and intimate, and the heat from his palm transmitted through my skin, bringing a warmth to my heart.Mia stood to the side, winking at me with a knowing smile on her face.Ethan had barged in at some point. When he saw Kane holding my hand, his eyes turned bloods

Over the next three days, rumors spread like wildfire through the Frostfang pack. Some said I didn't know my place for spurning the Bonevein pack's mate alliance and that I would surely regret it. Others said Kane was just acting on a whim and wouldn't treat me sincerely at all.Although Ryan was confined to his room and forced to copy the ancestral rules, he still sent word for me to stop being willful. He told me to apologize and make up with Ethan quickly.Ethan also came twice, but he was turned away at the door both times. The third time, he barged in with red-rimmed eyes, saying, "Blair, I know I was wrong. Can we start over? A broken bond can be restored again. It doesn't matter to me!""Whether it matters or not isn't for you to decide," I said from my seat by the window. "Ethan, you've never seen things clearly. What you like is nothing more than the frailty Lily pretends to have. What you defend isn't justice, but your own self-righteousness.""I haven't done that!" Etha

When I shook off Ethan's hand, the numb sensation in my fingertips had already spread to my forearm. The pain of breaking the mate bond felt like a dull knife cutting into flesh. My heart tightened in waves, but I kept my back straight and didn't let the tears fall."Blair, you're insane!" Ethan's face flushed crimson, his Alpha fury surging. "Break the bond, and you'll never be able to form a new mate bond in your lifetime!""That's still better than being bound to someone as blind and heartless as you." I sneered, sweeping my gaze over the shocked pack members in the hall. "The daughter of the Frostfang pack is not so desperate as to beg someone to become her mate."Uncle George stepped forward, leaning on his cane as he spoke in a solemn voice. "Since words have been spoken to the absolute, this mate alliance is hereby dissolved. Ryan, return to your room immediately and copy the ancestral rules. Do not take a single step out until you finish!"Ryan still wanted to argue, but h
