Mason

The dull, throbbing pain in my left cheek was a loud, constant reminder of the humiliation she'd handed me in that cramped apartment hallway.

A slap. In front of state officers. In front of her mother.

She really thought she'd won something tonight. She had no idea the amount of money I had to throw around, the palms I had to grease, just to force the administrative department to pull her mother's archived records on such short notice. I'd burned favours and invoked emergency state protocols just to track her down, and she had the nerve to act like the victim?

I looked from her face down to the glowing screen, curious about what other tricks she had up her sleeves.

I narrowed my eyes at the colour-coded spreadsheet.

"What is this?" I asked, my brow furrowing as my eyes scanned the top header.

"Your favourite thing," Catherine replied, her voice eerily calm. "A contract. Specifically, the Household and Familial Operations Roster."

I scoffed, picking up the device with two fingers. "Are you out of your mind?"

"Go through it, Mason. You wanted 50/50. It's exactly what you want. I know you'll love it."

The sarcasm wasn't lost on me as my eyes took in the letters on the page, forming words that made absolutely no sense.

- Shared Living Spaces (Living Area, Kitchen, Guest Room, and Bathroom): Rotational deep cleaning. Week A: Catherine. Week B: Mason.

- Private Quarters (Study, Home Gym, Bedroom): Sole occupant responsibility. No overlap.

- Children (School drop-offs, meal prep, homework supervision, bedtime routines, room clean-up, recreation—in short, everything involving the kids): Alternating daily shifts. Monday/Wednesday/Friday: Catherine. Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday: Mason. Sundays: Rotational.

- Outsourcing Clause: Any party unable to fulfil their assigned shift due to unforeseen circumstances may hire third-party services or trade shifts, provided notice is given 12 hours in advance.

The sheer absurdity of it hit me all at once. I looked up at her, waiting for the crack in her expression, waiting for her to break character and admit this was just another desperate play to get my attention.

"You're insane," I said, setting the tablet down with a heavy thud. "You want me—the CEO of L&T Group—to follow a household cleaning schedule?"

"You wanted fairness," Catherine said, her eyes fixed on mine, unblinking.

"This is craziness!"

"This is what I've done for the past six years without a single complaint, Mason," she countered instantly.

"And I paid you five million for it!" I snapped back, bolting up from my seat.

"Exactly. You've bought off your share of the past six years. Now it's time to get back on track. How it should have been all along. Fifty-fifty. Exactly half. Not a penny less, not an hour less."

"And if I refuse?" I leaned across the counter, letting the full weight of my authority press into the space between us. "What if I walk out of here right now and ignore this childish little spreadsheet?"

"Then the house stays dirty," she said simply. "Your gym will collect dust. Your laundry will sit in the basket until it rots. Your breakfast won't be made. And when Tuesday comes, if you aren't downstairs at 7:00 a.m. to pack Ethan and Mara's lunches, they will go to school hungry, and I will make sure the family court judge knows exactly why."

My breath hitched. "You wouldn't dare."

"Try me."

The silence in the kitchen stretched so thin even a pin could have broken it.

"You think you're backing me into a corner," I said slowly, forcing a dark chuckle as I leaned away from her. "You think I can't handle a simple schedule? I manage ten thousand employees across three continents, Catherine. You think packing lunchboxes and getting the kids dressed is going to break me?"

"I don't care if you can handle it or not, Mason," she said, leaning in just close enough for me to see the cold finality in her eyes. "As long as we both keep to our share of 50/50."

She reached out, retrieved her tablet, and turned toward her room.

"Welcome to your version of a fair marriage, Mr. Blake," she called back over her shoulder, her heels clicking softly against the wood. "Your shift starts on Tuesday."

CatherineMy fingers hovered over the zipper of Mara’s pink backpack for nearly two minutes before I finally pulled it shut.Everything was in place. Two sets of ironed uniforms hung on the closet door. Socks folded neatly and tucked right inside their shoes on the rug. Their blue water bottles were filled and sitting on the bottom shelf of the fridge, right next to the pre-sliced apples wrapped tightly in foil.I sat on the edge of Mara’s bed, smoothing back her hair. Ethan stirred beside her, clutching his faded bear to his chest."Ethan," I whispered, shaking his small shoulder gently until his dark eyes opened, heavy with sleep. "Mara, sweetie, open your eyes for a second."Mara rubbed her nose, squirming under the duvet. "Is it morning, Mom?""Not yet, baby," I said, keeping my voice as soft as velvet. "Listen to me closely, okay? Tomorrow, Mommy won't be here when you wake up. I have to go into work early."Ethan sat up, his brow knotting into a familiar frown. "Is Daddy taking

CatherineThe two men standing behind Mason wore matching grey suits, ID badges clipped to their lapels, and expressions of professional indifference."Catherine Blake?" the older of the two asked, holding out his card to me. "I'm Officer Luke from Child Protective Services. This is Officer Reyes. We received a report regarding the potential concealment and neglect of two minor children."I stared at him, my brain stalling. "Concealment?"Before the officer could answer, Mason stepped past me into the narrow entryway, his polished leather shoes loud against the linoleum. He didn't look at me. His eyes swept over the small living room, taking in the frayed couch cushions and the dated wallpaper."I tried to resolve this privately," Mason said, his voice smooth, controlled, and entirely fake. "However, when my wife cut off all communication and removed our children from their home to... 'this' environment, I had no choice but to involve the proper authorities to ensure their safety."A

CatherineI spent the next two days cocooned in the warmth of my mother’s small apartment, basking in the simple, forgotten luxury of being seen and appreciated. There were no early alarms, no rushing to scrub counters before an ungrateful husband walked through the door, and no frantic balancing of ledgers in the dark. When I finally switched my phone back on late Saturday afternoon to stream a movie for Ethan and Mara, the screen violently lit up. Dozens of missed calls and text notifications from Mason flooded the display.Mason: Is this your grand finale, Catherine? Six years of playing the victim just to pull a number like that out of thin air?Mason: You're not getting a cent.Mason: Stop embarrassing yourself and come back home.I smiled and immediately scrolled down to my chats with Sarah. She was the closest person I could call a friend.A sharp uncompromising family lawyer. We were very close during my university days, but with work and marriage overwhelming me, we rarely ke

Mason Saturday morning was unnaturally quiet. No tiny feet running down the hallway. No cartoons blaring from the living room.No smell of coffee.I stood in the middle of the kitchen, staring at the dishes still sitting in the sink.Catherine hadn't come home.Fine.If she wanted to stay away...I'd simply hire someone to do what she refused to."I want every inch of this place scrubbed, sanitized, and restored to exactly how it looked two days ago," I told the agency manager on the phone, not even looking at her as she walked through my front door with a team of four uniform-clad cleaners. "The kitchen, the living room, everything. Do not touch my personal study.""Of course, Mr. Blake. We'll have a full deep-clean finished within three hours," she assured me.I didn't answer. I just tossed my keys onto the freshly wiped marble counter and walked straight to my bedroom, slamming the door. Let professionals handle it. I wasn't going to spend another second breaking my shins over mis

Mason I didn't even bother opening the folder. The moment the plastic edge hit my palm, I flung it across the bedroom. It skidded across the hardwood floor, spitting out a few stray sheets of paper near the closet."Five million dollars?"A sharp, breathless laugh escaped my throat. She was completely out of her mind.I looked at Catherine, waiting for the punchline, but she just stood there with that eerie, vacant expression she’d been wearing since last night. Six years. For six years, she had played the part of the quiet, submissive office worker who accidentally stumbled into my bed. I knew she’d eventually crack. I knew the calculated patience would break and she’d finally show her true colors. Leeches like her simply couldn't resist the temptation forever; they always came looking for the payout."Is this your grand finale, Catherine?" I asked, looking for a reaction. "Six years of playing the victim just to pull a number like that out of thin air?"She didn't answer. She jus
