Dynan couldn't sit still and Mary noticed immediately when he walked through the front door two hours later than he'd promised.

She was in the living room with a glass of wine, her blonde hair perfectly styled even this late in the evening.

"You look tense," she said, setting her wine glass down on the side table. "Rough day with pack business?"

"Something like that." Dynan moved to the bar cart and poured himself a whiskey, downing half of it in one swallow.

The burn in his throat did nothing to quiet his wolf, which had been pacing restlessly since the moment Daggy ran from him.

Mary stood up and crossed the room. Their marriage had been practical from the start, a union that strengthened pack alliances and gave them both the stability they needed.

"You're distracted," she said, sliding her hands up his chest and over his shoulders. "I can help with that."

Dynan caught her wrists gently, intending to put some distance between them because his head was too full of Daggy and the little girl to think about anything else.

But Mary pressed closer, her body warm against his, and he became aroused.

Maybe it was the frustration or the confusion or the way his wolf was demanding he do something to regain the control he'd lost today.

He kissed her hard, his hands moving to her waist and pulling her flush against him.

Mary made a satisfied sound and wound her fingers into his hair, kissing him back, knowing exactly what he liked.

"That's better," she whispered against his mouth, her voice low and pleased. "I knew you just needed to unwind."

She opens his shirt buttons while he kisses down her neck, his wolf still restless beneath his skin but at least focused on something other than the woman who'd run from him.

Mary's robe fell open and he slid his hands over her bare skin, feeling her shiver under his touch.

They moved to the bedroom and Mary pushed him down onto the bed, straddling his lap while she finished unbuttoning his shirt.

"What's really bothering you?" she asked, rolling her hips against him in a way that made thinking difficult. "You're wound up tighter than usual."

"Does it matter?" Dynan pulled her down for another kiss, deeper this time, trying to lose himself in the familiar heat between them.

"Not if you don't want it to." Mary bit his lower lip gently before pulling back to look at him, her eyes dark with desire. "But I know when something's eating at you."

She stripped off her robe completely and Dynan let his hands wander over her curves, committing himself to this moment instead of the chaos in his head.

Mary knew how to move, and make him forget everything else, and right now that was exactly what he needed.

Their pace was rough, as Mary kept riding him like a pro like they were both trying to prove something neither of them could name.

Mary kept going faster and faster, her head thrown back and her breath coming in sharp gasps.

Dynan gripped her waist and matched her rhythm, his wolf finally quieting under the physical release.

Afterward they lay tangled in the sheets, both breathing hard.

Mary traced her fingers on his chest while her other hand rested low on her stomach, a gesture she probably didn't realize she was making.

"Maybe this time it'll take," she said softly, breaking the silence between them.

Dynan went still. They'd been trying for a child for over a year now with no success, and Mary had become increasingly focused on it with each passing month.

The pack needed an heir and she needed to secure her position as his wife, though she'd never said that part out loud.

"Maybe," he said, though his mind immediately went to the little girl and the fact that he might have had a child he'd known nothing about until today.

Mary propped herself up on one elbow to look at him. "You still haven't told me what happened today."

"I ran into someone I used to know," Dynan said carefully, not quite ready to tell her the full truth because he didn't know how to explain it without everything exploding. "Someone from before we got married."

"A woman?" Mary's voice went a bit louder and her eyes narrowed slightly.

"It was five years ago, Mary. It was an ancient history."

Mary studied his face for a long moment, like she was trying to read between the lines of what he wasn't saying. "Ancient history that still has you this wound up?"

"It's complicated." Dynan sat up and reached for his discarded clothes, suddenly needing space and distance from this conversation.

"Everything with you is complicated," Mary said, her tone light but with an edge underneath. "That's what I signed up for when I married an alpha."

She got out of bed and pulled her robe back on, tying it loosely at the waist. Dynan watched her move to the window.

"This woman you ran into," Mary said without turning around. "Should I be worried about her?"

"No," he immediately said. "You don't need to worry about her."

Mary smiled and moved back to the bed, pressing a kiss to his cheek. "I know, because you're too smart to let it. And I just hope that's true, because you don't want things to be messy."

Foster arrived at the study just past eleven, still dressed in his day clothes though the hour suggested he'd been pulled from something closer to sleep than work, his usual composure slightly frayed at the edges."You said this couldn't wait until morning," Foster said, taking the seat Dynan gestured toward, his eyes already moving toward the folder sitting closed on the desk between them."It couldn't." Dynan slid the report across, watching Foster's expression as he opened it, waiting for the same slow dawning horror that had settled over him hours earlier.Foster read in silence for several long minutes, occasionally flipping back a page to cross-reference something, his jaw tightening incrementally with each new revelation."This is thorough," he finally said, setting the report down and removing his glasses to rub at his eyes. "Where did this come from?""I authorized an internal audit two weeks ago. Quietly." Dynan's voice was flat, controlled in the way that usually meant he w

The setback came without warning, the way these things often did, a nurse's hurried footsteps down the hallway pulling Daggy from a half-sleep she'd fallen into in the small waiting area outside her mother's room."What's happening?" Daggy was on her feet before she'd fully processed the movement, watching two more nurses rush past with equipment she didn't recognize, her heart already hammering with the particular dread that had become familiar over these past weeks."Your mother's oxygen levels dropped suddenly," one of the nurses said, not stopping as she moved toward the room. "Dr. Wells is on his way."Daggy tried to follow but a hand caught her arm gently, one of the guards who'd been assigned to escort her, his grip firm but not unkind. "You need to wait here, ma'am. Let them work.""That's my mother," Daggy said, her voice cracking with a desperation that had become almost constant lately, worn thin from weeks of watching everything she loved hang in uncertain balance."I know

Nina had gotten used to Mary's phone ringing during their lunches, a small habit that had never bothered her before because Mary was the alpha's wife and alphas' wives had responsibilities that didn't pause for lunch dates. But lately the calls had changed. Mary used to just glance at the screen and let it go to voicemail with an apologetic smile, promising to call back later. Now she excused herself entirely, walking outside or into the restroom, her voice dropping low the moment she thought she was out of earshot.Nina noticed because Nina had spent years learning to notice things about Mary, the small tells that gave away more than her friend probably realized, and today's lunch was no different."Sorry about that," Mary said, sliding back into her seat with a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. "Palace business. Never ends.""Must be important," Nina said carefully, watching her friend reach for her wine glass with a hand that wasn't quite as steady as usual. "You've been step

Rita didn't sleep that night, lying stiff and awake in her narrow servant's quarters bed, replaying the conversation with Peter over and over until the words had worn grooves into her memory. She kept thinking about his face, the way he hadn't accused her outright but hadn't needed to, the quiet certainty in his eyes that told her he already knew more than he was letting on.By morning she'd made up her mind, or thought she had, dressing carefully and rehearsing what she wanted to say the entire walk down to the administrative wing where Foster kept his office. The door was open when she arrived, Foster hunched over paperwork with his reading glasses perched low on his nose, and Rita stood frozen in the doorway for a long moment before he finally noticed her."Can I help you?" he asked, not unkindly, setting his pen down and giving her his full attention in a way that somehow made this harder rather than easier."I need to talk to you," Rita said, her voice smaller than she wanted it

  • Fight like a mother    Chapter 23: The Groundskeeper's Slip

Curtis Boyle had worked the palace grounds for almost six years, mostly keeping to the hedges and flower beds along the eastern wall, the kind of job that let a man stay invisible if he wanted to, and Curtis had always preferred it that way.Peter found him kneeling in the dirt near the rose garden, gloves caked with soil, a small radio playing static-heavy music beside him that he switched off the moment he noticed someone approaching."Mr. Boyle." Peter kept his tone light, unhurried, the way he'd learned worked best when you didn't want someone bolting before you'd gotten anything useful out of them. "Got a minute?""Depends what for." Curtis didn't look up right away, brushing dirt from a trowel with more attention than the task really required."Just following up on some vehicle registrations. Routine stuff." Peter crouched down near the edge of the flower bed, keeping himself at eye level rather than looming. "You drive a blue sedan, right? Older model."Curtis's hands stilled f

The machines beeped their same steady rhythm they'd kept for days, and Daggy had almost stopped hearing them anymore, the sound fading into background noise the way anything did when you sat with it long enough. She was there on one of her supervised visits, watching her mother's chest rise and fall, when Mitchell's fingers twitched against the blanket, small but unmistakable."Mama?" Daggy sat up straighter, leaning closer, her heart suddenly hammering. "Mom, can you hear me?"Mitchell's eyelids fluttered, slow and heavy, fighting against whatever sedation was still working through her system. It took nearly a full minute before her eyes finally opened, unfocused at first, drifting around the room like she wasn't entirely sure where she was."Daggy?" Her voice was hoarse, barely more than a rasp, but it was her voice, and Daggy nearly sobbed at the sound of it."I'm here, Mama. I'm right here." Daggy took her hand carefully, mindful of the IV taped there. "You're in the hospital. You
