Daggy's hands were still shaking when she pushed the hospital doors open.Britty heavy in her arms being almost too big to carry anymore. Her mind was still back in that marketplace watching Dynan's face as he realized what she'd been hiding for five years. Her father's room was on the third floor and she took the stairs because waiting for the elevator felt impossible right now. Britty had stopped crying but her face was still buried against Daggy's neck, her small body trembling with leftover fear from the bad guys. Or maybe from the way Daggy had grabbed her and run like their lives depended on it. She didn't even close the shop, she hopes everything gets alright.Mitchell Johns looked up from her chair beside the hospital bed when Daggy stumbled inside, her weathered face creasing with immediate concern. "Daggy, what happened? You look like you've seen a ghost."Daggy set Britty down carefully and the little girl immediately climbed onto the empty chair in the corner, pulling h

The hotel room was too quiet when Daggy finally returned the next morning with Britty half-asleep against her shoulder. Lincoln Daggy's husband was sitting at the small desk by the window with his laptop open, his dark hair still damp from the shower and his expression focused on whatever was on the screen in front of him.He looked up when the door shut sound came and his face immediately creased with concern. "There you are, I was starting to worry. How's your dad?""Still the same," Daggy said, setting Britty down on the bed where she immediately curled up with her stuffed rabbit. Lincoln stood and crossed the room to pull her into a hug, and Daggy let herself lean into him because it was easier than dealing with talking. He'd always been good to her, patient and kind, the type of man who didn't ask too many questions about her past because he trusted her enough to believe she'd tell him what mattered."You should have called me," he said against her hair. "I would have come to

Mary Charles Hemstrong stood in the private medical facility on the edge of pack territory, tapping her manicured nails against the reception desk while the lab technician processed her request. The hair sample was sealed in a small plastic bag in her purse, collected so easily from that child it had almost been disappointing."The DNA comparison will take approximately forty-eight hours," the technician said, sliding a form across the counter for her to sign. "We'll call you as soon as the results are ready."Mary signed with a flourish and left without another word. Two days to confirm what she already suspected, what she'd seen in her husband's face when he came home rattled and distracted after running into his past, and now inviting his old mate who has a child that looks exactly like him.Two days to plan what she would do if that child turned out to be his.She drove back toward town with her mind already working through possibilities and contingencies, because Mary hadn't go

"When are you taking the results, Mrs. Hemstrong." The lab technician's voice came through the phone clear and professional, giving nothing away. "It's been almost two weeks."Mary ended the call immediately. All these waiting days had felt like an eternity, but she had to make sure nobody suspects her or the results from the test. The drive to the medical facility took twenty minutes and Mary spent the entire time running through scenarios in her head. If the DNA test came back negative, she'd be worried over nothing and could go back to focusing on getting pregnant with Dynan's legitimate heir. But if it came back positive, she'd need to act fast before that woman and her daughter could sink their claws deeper into her husband's life."Here you are." The technician slid a sealed envelope across the counter. "The results are conclusive."Mary didn't open it until she was back in her car with the doors locked and the engine running. Her hands were steady as she tore open the envelo

"Mom, please wake up," Daggy begged, her voice breaking. "Please, I need you to wake up."Lincoln stood a few feet away staring at Mitchell's body with wide eyes but he didn't move to help or call for assistance."Sign the papers," he suddenly said, sounding like someone that's irritated about something.Daggy looked up at him in disbelief. "What?""The divorce papers." Lincoln picked them up from where they'd fallen on the floor and held them out to her. "Sign them right now.""Are you insane?" Daggy shouted at him. "My mother is dying on the floor and you want to talk about divorce papers?""I don't care about your mother," Lincoln said coldly. "I need you to sign these so I can leave.""No!" Daggy turned back to Mitchell, checking for a pulse with blood-slicked fingers. It was there but weak. "I'm not signing anything until you tell me why you are behaving like this, and what you took in that palace that got you arrested and trying to run?""That's none of your business," Lincoln s
