The hotel room was too quiet when Daggy finally returned the next morning with Britty half-asleep against her shoulder.

Lincoln Daggy's husband was sitting at the small desk by the window with his laptop open, his dark hair still damp from the shower and his expression focused on whatever was on the screen in front of him.

He looked up when the door shut sound came and his face immediately creased with concern. "There you are, I was starting to worry. How's your dad?"

"Still the same," Daggy said, setting Britty down on the bed where she immediately curled up with her stuffed rabbit.

Lincoln stood and crossed the room to pull her into a hug, and Daggy let herself lean into him because it was easier than dealing with talking.

He'd always been good to her, patient and kind, the type of man who didn't ask too many questions about her past because he trusted her enough to believe she'd tell him what mattered.

"You should have called me," he said against her hair. "I would have come to the hospital with you."

"I know, but you had that conference call with the investors and I didn't want to interrupt." Daggy pulled back slightly to look up at him, forcing herself to meet his eyes.

"How did the meeting go?"

Lincoln's expression lit up, the way it always did when he talked about his business ventures.

He'd been working on this deal for months, some kind of partnership with a local development company that would expand his construction business into pack territory.

"Better than expected," he said, moving back to his laptop to show her something on the screen.

"They want to move forward with the contract and if everything goes according to plan, we'll be breaking ground on the first project within six weeks."

Daggy made herself look interested, made herself smile and nod in the right places while he explained the details.

But her mind was elsewhere, stuck on the image of Dynan's face when he'd realized Britty was his, the way his entire body had gone rigid with shock.

"That's amazing, Lincoln. You've worked so hard for this." She touched his arm lightly.

Daggy moved to check on Britty, who had fallen into a deeper sleep, her small chest rising and falling in the peaceful rhythm of childhood.

She looked so much like Dynan it was almost painful, from the shape of her nose to the way her hair curled at the edges.

"Daggy?" Lincoln's voice pulled her back to the present. "Mom called though, she told me about the shop incident. Are you okay?

"I'm fine," she said quietly, smoothing down Britty's hair. "Those men at the shop really shook me up."

Lincoln's expression darkened and he set his laptop aside. "I still can't believe that happened in broad daylight. Did the police ever show up?"

"Someone stopped them before it got that far." Daggy kept her voice casual, trying not to let any hint of the truth slip through. "Just a good Samaritan who happened to be passing by."

"Well thank god for that." Lincoln ran a hand through his hair, looking troubled.

"Maybe we should think about closing the shop while we're here. It's not worth the risk if there are gangs running around demanding protection money."

"My parents need the income, especially with Dad's medical bills." Daggy sat down on the edge of the bed, her body suddenly heavy with exhaustion.

"I'll hire some security or something, figure out a way to make it safer."

Lincoln nodded but didn't look convinced. He picked up his laptop from the desk and glanced at the screen. "I need to run out for a few hours to meet with the development team. Will you be okay here with Britty?"

"We'll be fine," Daggy said, relieved to have some time alone to think. "Go do what you need to do."

He grabbed his jacket and briefcase, pausing at the door to look back at her. "Try to get some rest, okay? You look exhausted."

The door closed behind him and Daggy finally let herself breathe, the tension in her shoulders releasing slightly now that she didn't have to maintain the act.

She pulled out her phone and saw three missed calls from her mother but no messages, which probably meant her father's condition hadn't changed.

Her finger hovered over the call back button when Lincoln's phone started ringing from where he'd left it on the desk, maybe he forgot it in his rush to leave.

Daggy glanced at the screen and saw a name she didn't recognize, just "J" with no other identifier.

The phone stopped ringing and immediately started again, like whoever was calling was insistent.

After four more rings, Daggy picked it up without thinking, intending to answer and let them know Lincoln had left his phone behind, but the call went to voicemail before she could swipe to accept.

A text came through a moment later and Daggy's thumb accidentally brushed the notification, opening the message thread.

She forgot how to breathe as she read the most recent message.

*The deal is almost done, you have to try so we get everything we need within this week. Call me immediately if you see this. I have something to talk about.*

— J

The hotel room door's keycard reader beeped and Daggy nearly dropped the phone in her panic.

She set it back on the desk exactly where Lincoln had left it and moved to the bathroom, closing the door just as she heard him come back inside.

"I forgot my phone," he called out, his voice muffled through the door. "Can't do business without it." He said laughing.

Daggy turned on the sink and splashed cold water on her face, trying to calm the racing of her heart.

When she came back out Lincoln was already gone again.

Britty stirred on the bed and opened her eyes, blinking sleepily up at Daggy. "Mama? Where's Daddy?"

The word 'Daddy' made something twist painfully in Daggy's chest because Lincoln wasn't her father and now Daggy was terrified that the real father was about to surface.

She sat down beside Britty and pulled her into her lap, breathing in her daughter's familiar scent and trying to hold onto the one thing in her life that still felt real and uncomplicated.

"He had to go to a meeting, baby," Daggy said softly. "But he'll be back soon."

Britty nodded and cuddled closer, her small fingers gripping Daggy's shirt. "That man from yesterday, the one who helped us. I don't know why it feels like I know him. Mama, who was he?"

Foster arrived at the study just past eleven, still dressed in his day clothes though the hour suggested he'd been pulled from something closer to sleep than work, his usual composure slightly frayed at the edges."You said this couldn't wait until morning," Foster said, taking the seat Dynan gestured toward, his eyes already moving toward the folder sitting closed on the desk between them."It couldn't." Dynan slid the report across, watching Foster's expression as he opened it, waiting for the same slow dawning horror that had settled over him hours earlier.Foster read in silence for several long minutes, occasionally flipping back a page to cross-reference something, his jaw tightening incrementally with each new revelation."This is thorough," he finally said, setting the report down and removing his glasses to rub at his eyes. "Where did this come from?""I authorized an internal audit two weeks ago. Quietly." Dynan's voice was flat, controlled in the way that usually meant he w

The setback came without warning, the way these things often did, a nurse's hurried footsteps down the hallway pulling Daggy from a half-sleep she'd fallen into in the small waiting area outside her mother's room."What's happening?" Daggy was on her feet before she'd fully processed the movement, watching two more nurses rush past with equipment she didn't recognize, her heart already hammering with the particular dread that had become familiar over these past weeks."Your mother's oxygen levels dropped suddenly," one of the nurses said, not stopping as she moved toward the room. "Dr. Wells is on his way."Daggy tried to follow but a hand caught her arm gently, one of the guards who'd been assigned to escort her, his grip firm but not unkind. "You need to wait here, ma'am. Let them work.""That's my mother," Daggy said, her voice cracking with a desperation that had become almost constant lately, worn thin from weeks of watching everything she loved hang in uncertain balance."I know

  • Fight like a mother    Chapter 25: What Nina Noticed

Nina had gotten used to Mary's phone ringing during their lunches, a small habit that had never bothered her before because Mary was the alpha's wife and alphas' wives had responsibilities that didn't pause for lunch dates. But lately the calls had changed. Mary used to just glance at the screen and let it go to voicemail with an apologetic smile, promising to call back later. Now she excused herself entirely, walking outside or into the restroom, her voice dropping low the moment she thought she was out of earshot.Nina noticed because Nina had spent years learning to notice things about Mary, the small tells that gave away more than her friend probably realized, and today's lunch was no different."Sorry about that," Mary said, sliding back into her seat with a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. "Palace business. Never ends.""Must be important," Nina said carefully, watching her friend reach for her wine glass with a hand that wasn't quite as steady as usual. "You've been step

  • Fight like a mother    Chapter 24: Contingencies

Rita didn't sleep that night, lying stiff and awake in her narrow servant's quarters bed, replaying the conversation with Peter over and over until the words had worn grooves into her memory. She kept thinking about his face, the way he hadn't accused her outright but hadn't needed to, the quiet certainty in his eyes that told her he already knew more than he was letting on.By morning she'd made up her mind, or thought she had, dressing carefully and rehearsing what she wanted to say the entire walk down to the administrative wing where Foster kept his office. The door was open when she arrived, Foster hunched over paperwork with his reading glasses perched low on his nose, and Rita stood frozen in the doorway for a long moment before he finally noticed her."Can I help you?" he asked, not unkindly, setting his pen down and giving her his full attention in a way that somehow made this harder rather than easier."I need to talk to you," Rita said, her voice smaller than she wanted it

  • Fight like a mother    Chapter 23: The Groundskeeper's Slip

Curtis Boyle had worked the palace grounds for almost six years, mostly keeping to the hedges and flower beds along the eastern wall, the kind of job that let a man stay invisible if he wanted to, and Curtis had always preferred it that way.Peter found him kneeling in the dirt near the rose garden, gloves caked with soil, a small radio playing static-heavy music beside him that he switched off the moment he noticed someone approaching."Mr. Boyle." Peter kept his tone light, unhurried, the way he'd learned worked best when you didn't want someone bolting before you'd gotten anything useful out of them. "Got a minute?""Depends what for." Curtis didn't look up right away, brushing dirt from a trowel with more attention than the task really required."Just following up on some vehicle registrations. Routine stuff." Peter crouched down near the edge of the flower bed, keeping himself at eye level rather than looming. "You drive a blue sedan, right? Older model."Curtis's hands stilled f

The machines beeped their same steady rhythm they'd kept for days, and Daggy had almost stopped hearing them anymore, the sound fading into background noise the way anything did when you sat with it long enough. She was there on one of her supervised visits, watching her mother's chest rise and fall, when Mitchell's fingers twitched against the blanket, small but unmistakable."Mama?" Daggy sat up straighter, leaning closer, her heart suddenly hammering. "Mom, can you hear me?"Mitchell's eyelids fluttered, slow and heavy, fighting against whatever sedation was still working through her system. It took nearly a full minute before her eyes finally opened, unfocused at first, drifting around the room like she wasn't entirely sure where she was."Daggy?" Her voice was hoarse, barely more than a rasp, but it was her voice, and Daggy nearly sobbed at the sound of it."I'm here, Mama. I'm right here." Daggy took her hand carefully, mindful of the IV taped there. "You're in the hospital. You
