LOGINShe looked at her friends. “I know, guys. I know what he thinks about me taking this job. He thinks that I caved in the face of his charm and hot face and money. And honestly? I don’t care what he thinks. I know what I’m doing there, why I’m doing what he wants, why I gave in.” She shrugged. “All I care about is my Mom being healthy again… for that to happen, I’ll put up with just about anything. Including him and his monster ego.”
They nodded.
“Will it be hard to be around him? Sure.” Maggie sighed. “I thought – I thought we had something that we didn’t. He hurt me. He never apologized, never cared that I caught him in bed with that woman. He cheated on me many, many times, I know now, though I didn’t then. That’s a lot of history, and it’s bad, and I know all of that.”
“Do you want to try to forgive him?” Reena asked.
Maggie stared at her. “Really?”
“Yeah.” Reena brushed her long blonde hair back off her face. “I’m not saying get back together with the guy, or even be friends. I mean – just let go of some of the anger that you’ve been holding onto for the past two years.”
Maggie kept staring. “I don’t know. I’ve never thought about forgiveness. I’ve only ever thought about forgetting him.”
Mia bit her lip. “It’s hard to do, Reena. Forgiveness, I mean.”
“Yeah, I know.” Reena was quiet for a few seconds. “I’m nowhere near forgiving Simon, you know. It’s not like I’m some paragon or poster girl for gushing forgiveness or anything. I’m just saying… hanging onto all that anger isn’t good for me. It’s not good for anyone.” Her soft blue eyes gazed at her friends. “For any of us.”
The other women considered her words. Katie had never even considered forgiving her stepfather; Mia was sure that even if by some miracle she managed to forgive Tom Devinger for herself, she’d never be able to do so for what he’d done to those kids; Maggie wasn’t convinced she even wanted to forgive Joe. But if Reena was willing to work on forgiving Simon Yates – a man who had beaten her badly and tried to rape her – then maybe the others could work a bit on letting some of their own rage and resentment go, too.
“You’re right, sweetie,” Mia said. “Speaking of which, what’s happening with the case against Simon right now?”
“The court date is set for next Tuesday.” Reena looked at her hands. “Assuming his lawyers don’t get another continuance, of course.”
“Do you think they will?” Katie asked.
“I don’t know. They’ve already had three, and I think even the judge is pretty fed up by now. I hope we can get things going at last… but it’s not up to me, right?”
“And the others?” Maggie said gently. “The other women? They’ll testify too?”
“Some will for sure.” Reena shook her head. “But two of them are terrified. I mean, they’re almost suicidal at the thought of standing up in open court and testifying about what Simon did to them. I don’t think they’ll be able to go through with it, to be honest.”
“Will that hurt your case?” Mia asked.
“Charlotte doesn’t think so,” Reena said. “We have seven women now, including me, who are willing to testify that Simon attacked them. That’s pretty compelling, no matter how you look at it, so I’m not sure that losing two potential witnesses is that big of an issue.”
“Jesus Christ,” Katie said. “Nine women…”
“That you know of,” Maggie added. “I’m sure there are others.”
“Yeah, me too,” Reena said. “And I imagine that when this story hits the press, others will come forward.”
“And how are you doing with that?” Mia said. “With the idea that you’ll be in the spotlight soon?”
“I think I’m doing better with it than Mitch is,” Reena said. “He’s already worried as hell what will be said about me. Keeps saying that as soon as it’s all over, he’s taking me away for a week or two to recover. Someplace with no cell or internet service.”
“Not a bad idea,” Maggie said. “Go and hide out somewhere. Throw the TV out the window, cut off the internet, pretend none of it’s happening. Stay in bed with your smoking hot kickboxer and let him distract you for a few days…”
Reena grinned. “Yeah, maybe. We’ll see.”
“Well, if you want a nice, quiet place to be alone with Mitch, let me know.” Mia smiled. “I know the perfect spot.”
“Where Nick took you after you were hurt?” Reena said.
“Yep, Open Skies Ranch. Amazing place. Private and beautiful. Healing, even.” She glanced around her living room. “I have the owner’s personal business card around here somewhere, if you want it.”
“Yes, please. Quiet and beautiful sounds good.” Reena sighed as she thought about what was surely coming: the trial and questions and cross-examination. The attacks on her character, the digging into her personal and sexual history, putting her current relationship with Mitch under a public microscope. “Sounds perfect, actually.”
They’d just had two helpings of dessert after a slightly overdone dinner. Maggie was pulled up tight against Joe’s side, her curls tumbling warm and lovely over his shoulder. He was stroking her back, his fingertips soothing and gentle.“So can I take you to lunch tomorrow?” Joe said. “And by ‘take you to lunch’, I mean ‘do you want to taste-test some menu ideas?’ I’m finalizing the menu this week.”“I wish.” Maggie kissed him. “But I talked to Mia just before you and your Dad showed up at the studio. Turns out a surgical spot cleared on short notice, and so Nick’s surgery just got moved up to tomorrow. I’ll be with Mia in the waiting room for most of the day.”“Oh, God.” Joe stared at her. “How are she and Nick doing?”“Terrible.”“Shit.” Joe shook his head. “Do you want me there with you?”“No, honey. It’s OK. I know you need to work on the menu.”“Yeah, but… I want to be there for you guys more.”“Really?”He sighed in mock exasperation. “Why do you doubt me?”“I don’t.” She smiled
Joe grabbed her hips, pulling her back, opening her to him completely. She froze, aching for him to enter her. She was surprised when he gently took her chin in his fingers and turned her to face him. His kiss was tender, so tender that tears came to her eyes. When he pulled away and saw her tears, he smiled at her.“I love you, Maggie.”“Oh, Joe.” Her heart stopped, started again at double-time. “I love you too.”Joe leaned forward now, his one hand on top of hers on the wall, his fingers entangled with hers. He rubbed his cock against her wet, swollen folds and she groaned, wanting him so much it almost hurt. Her forehead was resting on his muscled forearm, and she shut her eyes, barely breathing. Please, Joe. Please. When he took her in one hard, thick thrust, it was everything she’d been fantasizing about, and it was better than she remembered. Her whole body welcomed him inside, and he felt it: she was drenched, so hot and tight, and her pussy muscles clamped down on him within s
Unable to help herself, she did. His finger moved out, back in, his pace slow and steady. Soon, it was joined by a second one, and she ground herself against them. It was all so familiar – his scent, his body, his hands – but it was also new, with a level of honesty, trust, and intimacy that they’d never had between them before. Now that she was his and he was hers, it was better. It was perfect.Maggie’s orgasm grew fast, faster than she’d ever experienced before. She abandoned herself to it now, one leg wrapping around his strong thigh without her even noticing it was happening. She dug her nails into his shoulders, leaving crescents in his skin, and she didn’t notice that, either. All she knew was the pleasure that he was giving her, and when his thumb rubbed her clit, her cry echoed around the bathroom.“Joe,” she said, not even recognizing her own voice. “Joe…”“You close, baby?” he said, his fingers going deeper now. “You going to come for me?”“God…” Her voice was a keening whi
Maggie sighed in happiness as she entered Joe’s house. It was warm and familiar, and it always smelled delicious – like he’d just finished cooking an amazing meal there. Which, if she thought about it, he usually had done. He heard her soft exhalation, saw the tension start to move out of her shoulders, and he pulled her into his arms for a hug.“You OK?” he asked softly. “Like, really OK?”“I am.” She leaned into his body, feeling both aroused and relaxed. “I miss her so much, but I’m – happy, mostly. With work. With the girls' friendship." She paused, a bit shy and hesitant. "With you.”“Good to hear, all of it.” He kissed her forehead, her freckled nose, then gave her a teasing little grin. “Especially the last part. Now, go get cleaned up. You’re a mess.”“Yeah, I know.” She glanced down at her clothes and hands. “What I do is so messy, huh?”“But you’re gorgeous, sweetness. Just fucking breathtaking.”Their eyes met, and the air between them almost crackled. “OK, so.” Maggie for
A little over three weeks later, Joe and his father Amos stopped by Maggie’s studio to check on the second apsara. She welcomed them in, smiled at Amos. He and Joe’s mother Claudia had been at Rita’s funeral, and she knew she’d spoken to them briefly at the wake afterwards. But she’d been so fuzzy and shocked, she barely remembered their conversation now.Amos gave her a hug. “How you doing, girl?”“Good. Better.”His blue eyes – eyes so much like his son’s – took her in. “Really?”“Yes.”Joe kissed her now, just a quick one on the cheek, but his lips burned her, scorched her with their heat. God, she wanted to make love to him; it was becoming an almost irrational need at this point. She dreamt about it at night, she daydreamed about it on the bus. Her desire for Joe was becoming all-consuming, and his resolve to take it slow was starting to make her crazy.“You OK, baby?” he murmured in her ear. That husky whisper had her wet and aching between her legs, and the bastard knew it. His
Nick stared at Mia, his face gray. He’d known it was going to be bad, but he hadn’t expected this.“When?” he asked, his voice guttural. “I’d leave in a month.” Mia’s beautiful gold eyes gazed at him calmly. “Grant sent me the plane ticket this morning, so it’s mine for the taking. If I choose to go.”Fighting down the insane urge to locate the ticket somewhere in her apartment and rip it to shreds, Nick got to his feet. He limped around her warm and welcoming living room, running his fingers through his dark hair.“I can’t believe you did all this without talking to me about it!” he burst out. “I mean… four months in Thailand? And not a hint that you were thinking about leaving me?” Even as he said the words, he knew how hypocritical they were, in light of what he’d been keeping from her.Her eyes flashed now. “Are you fucking for real? You’re actually accusing me of not trying to talk to you?”That stopped him. Mia almost never swore.“For weeks, Nick – weeks – you’ve been showing
