Chapter Thirty-Three

The bathroom floor was not where either sister expected to spend their afternoon.

Yet there they were.

Still sitting side by side.

Still staring at the tests.

Still occasionally laughing in complete disbelief.

Harper's laugh was mostly panic.

Daisy's was mostly shock.

Neither seemed capable of standing up.

"This is your fault."

Harper pointed immediately.

"My fault?"

"Yes."

"You diagnosed me."

"You made me take a test."

"For support."

"This is not support."

Harper laughed.

Then immediately looked at her positive test again.

Then laughed harder.

Which set Daisy off.

Again.

The whole thing was ridiculous.

Completely ridiculous.

Neither of them noticed the apartment door opening.

Or Roman walking inside.

Or Roman calling out:

"Hello?"

No answer.

Just laughter.

Coming from somewhere inside the apartment.

Roman frowned.

That couldn't be good.

Whenever Daisy and Harper laughed this much, chaos usually followed.

Curious, he followed the sound.

Down the hallway.

Past the nursery where Lillie was still sleeping peacefully.

And straight toward the bathroom.

Roman stopped in the doorway.

Confused.

Both sisters were sitting on the floor.

Both laughing.

Both holding something.

He looked closer.

Pregnancy tests.

Roman froze.

Completely.

For a second he honestly thought he'd misunderstood what he was seeing.

Then Harper waved one dramatically.

And Roman's brain stopped functioning.

"What..."

Both women jumped.

Hard.

Daisy nearly dropped her test.

Harper actually squeaked.

Neither had realised he was standing there.

"Roman!"

"What are you doing there?"

Roman ignored the question.

His eyes remained fixed on the tests.

Then on the tests.

Then back to the tests.

He pointed.

Slowly.

"Who do those belong to?"

The room immediately went quiet.

The sisters looked at each other.

Then at him.

Then at each other again.

Neither seemed sure how to answer.

Finally Harper pointed between them.

"Us."

Roman blinked.

Once.

Twice.

"Both of you?"

"Yes."

Another blink.

Roman looked like somebody had unplugged him.

Daisy had never seen him look so completely confused.

Then he asked the question.

The obvious question.

"Are any of them positive?"

The sisters looked at each other again.

A silent conversation passing between them.

Then together they answered:

"Both."

Silence.

Complete silence.

Roman stared.

Neither sister moved.

Nobody breathed.

Then Roman laughed.

One short laugh.

Not because it was funny.

Because his brain couldn't process anything else.

"What?"

Daisy looked helpless.

"I know."

"What do you mean you know?"

"I just found out."

Roman looked at Harper.

Then Daisy.

Then Harper again.

Trying desperately to make sense of the situation.

"So..."

He pointed toward Harper.

"You're pregnant."

Harper nodded.

Then Roman pointed toward Daisy.

"And you're pregnant."

Daisy nodded too.

Roman looked like he needed a minute.

Possibly an hour.

Maybe a week.

Slowly he lowered himself to the floor opposite them.

Still staring.

"You took the tests together?"

"Yes."

"For support."

Roman immediately looked at Harper.

"This was your idea wasn't it?"

"Maybe."

"It was definitely your idea."

Harper smiled.

A little sheepishly.

Roman rubbed both hands over his face.

Then suddenly looked at Daisy.

Really looked at her.

His eyes immediately softened.

"You didn't know?"

She shook her head.

"No."

For the first time since entering the bathroom, Roman's focus shifted entirely to her.

Everything else disappeared.

The confusion.

The shock.

The second pregnancy test.

Everything.

All he could see was Daisy.

And the fact she looked completely overwhelmed.

Slowly he reached across and took her hand.

"You okay?"

The same question he'd asked her months ago.

The same question he always asked first.

Daisy laughed shakily.

"I have absolutely no idea."

Fair answer.

Roman squeezed her hand gently.

Then looked down at the test.

Then back at her.

Then suddenly smiled.

A real smile.

Small at first.

Then bigger.

Until there was no hiding it.

Daisy stared.

"Roman."

"What?"

"You're smiling."

"I know."

"You're supposed to be shocked."

"I am."

"You don't look shocked."

"Oh, I'm definitely shocked."

Harper snorted.

Roman laughed.

Then looked at Daisy again.

His eyes warm.

Happy.

A little emotional.

"We made another baby."

The words settled quietly between them.

Real.

Terrifying.

Wonderful.

Daisy stared at him.

Then laughed.

Then cried.

Which honestly felt appropriate.

Because in the next room, six-month-old Lillie slept peacefully through all of it.

Completely unaware that by the end of the day she'd been promoted.

To big sister. ❤️📖
