Chapter 2

Author: Dancing Flower
Drew's POV

The next morning, when I arrived at the factory, I found a crowd gathered around my old workstation.

Billy hurried over as soon as he saw me. "Drew, Ms. Thompson hired a third-party contractor. They're going to sort through and reorganize everything in the warehouse."

I nodded. "At least that will make things easier for you."

Pamela happened to walk by with a fake smile plastered on her face.

"It certainly will. There wasn't much work to begin with, and now that we've brought in a new inventory system and are moving everything into the database, everything will be much more efficient than just scribbling into that notebook of yours.

"No one in this world is irreplaceable, Drew Krause. No matter how capable you are, you can't change that!"

I nodded without saying anything. I just took a quick glance out the window. All the dirt in the open lot had been dug up and paved over with concrete.

I took a deep breath. What a shame. They'd never get to eat homegrown vegetables again.

The contractors took the records I'd organized to the warehouse. But they had just taken one look at the overwhelming amount of work waiting for them before they quickly backed off.

"Ms. Thompson, this is way too much work. You'll need to pay us extra!"

Pamela wired them 15,000 dollars without hesitation. "You have three days to finish everything!"

The team agreed immediately.

I stood off to the side, watching without a word, while Pamela looked around the factory with her chin held high.

"You're all going to watch carefully over the next few days," she said, raising her voice. "Don't think having decades of experience means you have the right to coast on seniority. This is a tech-driven society. If you don't keep working hard, you can expect to be laid off!

"It's time for this company to bring in some fresh blood. Starting now, we'll have morning briefings, end-of-day summaries, and direct individual accountability!

"Drew Krause, you're lucky you're retired. Otherwise, someone like you wouldn't be able to keep up with our pace."

I just chuckled softly at her words. Then, I returned to my workstation to look through recipes.

The contractors might be able to get the warehouse sorted out, but the factory's machinery wasn't something that could simply be replaced overnight.

Pamela talked about buying new equipment, but a single machine could cost anywhere between hundreds of thousands of dollars and over a million dollars. That would drive up costs considerably.

With the economy struggling, tacking on millions of dollars in costs wasn't reform. It was reckless expansion—something only an idiot would do.

But I didn't say anything. I just quietly studied my recipes. I still had to figure out what to cook when I got home, after all.

The contractors stayed for three days, but in that time, they only managed to sort through a few hundred parts. Even that nearly wore them out.

Then, on the fourth day, the new system went live, with all 3,000-plus parts entered into the database.

Seeing this, Pamela immediately made the decision to have me pack up and leave.

I didn't argue. I completed the handover checklist, finished all the necessary paperwork, and then prepared to leave.

At the same time, the new machinery Pamela ordered arrived at the factory. When the workers saw the production line shut down and the new equipment being moved in, they immediately erupted into a commotion.

One after another, they came looking for me.

"Drew, what the heck is going on here?"

"Drew, all the new machines have controls entirely in Wallernian. None of us know how to operate them!"

I just chuckled softly. "With fresh blood coming in, it only makes sense to use new equipment."

"Good. At least you're aware of that," Pamela boomed, her voice coming from behind me.

She stood there with her arms crossed, looking down her nose at me.

"Brand-new, fully automated equipment from Wallerny. From now on, our production line is going to be the fastest in the industry!"

She was practically dripping with self-satisfaction as she continued, "Those who used to coast by doing the bare minimum, don't expect to slack off on my watch anymore. 24-hour surveillance cameras have been installed across the entire factory. No more excuses."

Hearing this, I drew a deep breath.

"Creating a high-pressure work environment like this will only make the workers resent the company. In the past—"

"The past is ancient history!" Pamela cut me off. "My dad sent me abroad to study business specifically so I could come back and straighten out this workplace!"

Drew's POVAfter Shawn was done yelling at Pamela, he turned to me and clasped my hand respectfully."Drew, please don't hold it against her. I spoiled her rotten. I originally sent her here because I wanted her to take over the business someday. I thought she could get to know everyone and learn the ropes."I never imagined the idiot would do something like this. I swear, I…"He was so angry that he looked ready to hit her again.I only gave him a faint smile. "It's fine. You can't blame someone for what they don't know. But something Pamela said actually reminded me of a saying—no matter where you are, never forget why you started."We built this factory together, step by step, from the ground up. You can't let her just push everyone out the moment she takes the reins. I'm retired, so it doesn't matter that I left. But everyone else is innocent."Shawn's face turned bright red when he heard that. He spun around and yelled at Pamela, "Look at what you've done! What? Is the fact

Drew's POVEveryone gathered around me. I even took a moment to explain to the production supervisor what to do if a similar situation ever came up again. After a tense hour, I finally had everything fixed.I had Billy bring out a bottle of champagne as well as a coin for a little ceremony. Once everything was set up, I placed the coin under the machine, popped the cork on the champagne, and said a few words for good luck before we all raised our glasses.Pamela scoffed with derision. "What year is it? And you're still doing this superstitious nonsense?""No matter what year it is, you should still treat machinery like this with respect," I said in a stern voice. "This machine could be with you for decades."She snorted but said nothing more. Then, as the machine roared back to life, the conveyor belt started moving smoothly, and the whole production floor erupted in cheers."Drew really is the best!""Drew can practically build the parts by hand!"The workers began trickling

Drew's POVAfter hanging up, I patted Patty's head."Grandpa has to swing by the factory for a bit.""Why are you going back, Dad?" my son asked, not holding back. "Pamela doesn't even respect you. If you're going back now, you're just asking to be made a fool of.""Nobody can make a fool out of someone who actually knows their stuff. I'm going back to help everyone, not her specifically. Besides, she's paying me. There's no reason to turn down money."Hearing that, he dropped the subject.A little over ten minutes later, Billy's car arrived downstairs. He was personally driving me to the factory. On the way there, he explained that the equipment was supposedly missing just one screw.I was a little confused. "Didn't you hire a third-party contractor?""Yeah. They reorganized and re-entered everything into inventory, and no one knows where they put it. There are dozens of screw types all jumbled together. Who knows which one it is?"We spent forever looking without any luck. T

Third-Person POVPamela's expression turned thoroughly livid at those words, but Dr. Schmidt couldn't wait any longer. His translator came over and said, "Dr. Schmidt can't stay any longer. He has a flight to catch. If you still can't find it, you'll have to submit another service request and book another service visit.""How long will that take?" Pamela asked."I don't know. Once Dr. Schmidt gets back to Wallerny, there's no telling when he can return."Pamela was frantic. The orders were still waiting to be filled, after all. With no other choice, she gritted her teeth and asked, "Can't he just supply one himself?""The chances of someone carrying a specific screw on them are practically zero. You could always put the screw in yourselves once you find it."At this point, Pamela knew they had run out of time. She could only watch as Dr. Schmidt and his translator left the factory. She had just shelled out 12,000 dollars, yet nothing had been resolved. She stared at the massive

Third-Person POVLydia immediately called the manufacturer's engineer, Dr. Schmidt. Fortunately, he was still in the area. Unfortunately, his rates weren't cheap. After hanging up, Lydia looked nervously at Pamela."What are you staring at me for?" the latter snapped in annoyance. "Just spit it out!""Dr. Schmidt said he can come over, but the service call itself will be 3,000 dollars, and the final price will depend on what he finds. His hourly rate starts at 1,500 dollars."Pamela gritted her teeth. "How dare he charge prices like that? And the equipment is still under warranty too!""Do you want him to fix it or not, Ms. Thompson? If we don't get it repaired, production stays shut down, and we won't be able to fulfill this batch of orders. He's an overseas specialist. That's the kind of rate they charge."Pamela frowned deeply as she stared at the machinery sitting idle on the floor. Left with no other choice, she could only give in."Fine! Tell him to come."Once this ship

Drew's POVPamela's gaze turned cold and sharp."We were way too easy on you before, which made all of you lazy and complacent!" she barked. "From now on, you'll all do things my way. We're tightening attendance policies and enforcing strict schedules. Anyone who doesn't meet the standards will be let go!"The moment the words left her mouth, an uproar broke out among the workers.I just shrugged without saying a word. None of this had anything to do with me anymore.Still, the roar of the machinery from the production floor hit me somewhere deep inside. I looked at the factory sign by the entrance and instinctively reached out and brushed my fingers across it.I'd spent 40 years here. Now that even the factory sign had been replaced, it was my time to leave too.Behind me, I could still hear Pamela lecturing the workers, but I put it all out of my mind. When I got home, I got some bones and mushrooms and started making soup. As the ingredients bubbled away in the pot, the roar
