Drew's POV

I had worked at this factory for 40 years, working my way up from an entry-level position on the production line to a production supervisor and eventually being rehired after retirement.

Whenever I had free time, I'd work a small vegetable patch on unused land around the factory, and whenever a machine broke down, I was the one who could get it fired back up.

My coworkers joked that I was the "anchor" keeping the whole place steady.

"As long as Drew's around, we don't need to worry about a thing."

Eventually, that turned into, "With Drew around, even the most complicated machine is just like a kid's toy!"

The owner paid me about 2,000 dollars a month just to be that "anchor".

Pamela Thompson, however, didn't see it that way.

She stood there in a chic designer dress, a luxury handbag slung over her arm, giving me a sideways glance. "I have no idea what my dad's thinking, keeping such an old guy hanging around the factory. Anyone who sees him is going to think we're running a nursing home!

"Billy, fire him!"

Billy Coulthard from HR looked deeply conflicted. "But…"

"But what? I call the shots around here!"

Seeing how uncomfortable Billy looked, I just smiled calmly. "No problem. But if you're firing me, you'll have to pay me severance."

"Give me a break. You're already collecting a pension, aren't you? What severance could you possibly be entitled to? Do you have a special contract? If not, get lost!"

I gave it some thought, and she was right. I didn't have one.

When I stayed on after retirement, I'd only signed a standard contract without any special clauses. In other words, I really wasn't entitled to any compensation if she fired me.

"Nothing more to say? In that case, get out!" Pamela said as she rolled her eyes and strutted off.

I sighed quietly as I watched the vegetables I'd planted being dug up, then went to load up my bicycle. Then, I gathered all the technical notes and records I'd compiled over the years and asked Billy for a handover checklist.

When Pamela caught sight of it, she sneered. "Come on, Drew. What on earth are you handing off? Your gardening tips?"

For the first time, I addressed her sarcasm directly, saying, "It's the machinery maintenance notes."

"Don't need them! We've replaced all the machinery in the factory. Your prehistoric notes won't be useful anymore. Now, grab your bicycle and leave. Right now."

Billy chimed in nervously, "Ms. Thompson, Drew still has some odds and ends to hand over. He also handles part of the logistics work."

Pamela flashed a look of utter disdain and snorted. "Make it fast!"

Once she was gone, Billy sighed. "This is the third batch this month. She's already pushed out several veteran workers."

I watched Pamela walk away before calmly gathering up my vegetable seeds and patting Billy on the shoulder.

"Pay attention. I'm only going over this handover checklist once. If you miss something, it won't be my business anymore."

Billy quickly pulled himself together and went through and organized the detailed lists I'd printed out.

Still, 40 years was a long time. Although I didn't have a big day-to-day workload, there were still thousands of small parts in the warehouse, and I had my own system when it came to them.

Now that all of it was being handed over to Billy, it was clearly too much for him to handle, so he went to Pamela to ask for extra help.

But the moment she heard this, she flew into a rage. "You need more manpower? He's just one old man. How much work could he possibly be doing? You're just being lazy!"

"But Ms. Thompson, it's true. There are more than 3,000 parts in the warehouse, and only Drew knows where everything is. And when the machines break down, he's the only one who knows how to fix them.

"If we fire Drew, we won't even be able to function in that warehouse," he continued, standing up for me.

A flash of contempt crossed Pamela's face. "Enough. Keep talking, and you can walk out the door right behind him. I'll give Drew one week to complete the handoff. Then, he's gone."

She was backing off temporarily, but it wasn't a compromise. She just wanted me to finish the handover properly before throwing me out.

I stayed completely unbothered. Once I had all the files organized, I clocked out at mealtime, loaded my vegetables into my bicycle basket, and gave whatever I couldn't take with me to the workers.

Drew's POVAfter Shawn was done yelling at Pamela, he turned to me and clasped my hand respectfully."Drew, please don't hold it against her. I spoiled her rotten. I originally sent her here because I wanted her to take over the business someday. I thought she could get to know everyone and learn the ropes."I never imagined the idiot would do something like this. I swear, I…"He was so angry that he looked ready to hit her again.I only gave him a faint smile. "It's fine. You can't blame someone for what they don't know. But something Pamela said actually reminded me of a saying—no matter where you are, never forget why you started."We built this factory together, step by step, from the ground up. You can't let her just push everyone out the moment she takes the reins. I'm retired, so it doesn't matter that I left. But everyone else is innocent."Shawn's face turned bright red when he heard that. He spun around and yelled at Pamela, "Look at what you've done! What? Is the fact

Drew's POVEveryone gathered around me. I even took a moment to explain to the production supervisor what to do if a similar situation ever came up again. After a tense hour, I finally had everything fixed.I had Billy bring out a bottle of champagne as well as a coin for a little ceremony. Once everything was set up, I placed the coin under the machine, popped the cork on the champagne, and said a few words for good luck before we all raised our glasses.Pamela scoffed with derision. "What year is it? And you're still doing this superstitious nonsense?""No matter what year it is, you should still treat machinery like this with respect," I said in a stern voice. "This machine could be with you for decades."She snorted but said nothing more. Then, as the machine roared back to life, the conveyor belt started moving smoothly, and the whole production floor erupted in cheers."Drew really is the best!""Drew can practically build the parts by hand!"The workers began trickling

Drew's POVAfter hanging up, I patted Patty's head."Grandpa has to swing by the factory for a bit.""Why are you going back, Dad?" my son asked, not holding back. "Pamela doesn't even respect you. If you're going back now, you're just asking to be made a fool of.""Nobody can make a fool out of someone who actually knows their stuff. I'm going back to help everyone, not her specifically. Besides, she's paying me. There's no reason to turn down money."Hearing that, he dropped the subject.A little over ten minutes later, Billy's car arrived downstairs. He was personally driving me to the factory. On the way there, he explained that the equipment was supposedly missing just one screw.I was a little confused. "Didn't you hire a third-party contractor?""Yeah. They reorganized and re-entered everything into inventory, and no one knows where they put it. There are dozens of screw types all jumbled together. Who knows which one it is?"We spent forever looking without any luck. T

Third-Person POVPamela's expression turned thoroughly livid at those words, but Dr. Schmidt couldn't wait any longer. His translator came over and said, "Dr. Schmidt can't stay any longer. He has a flight to catch. If you still can't find it, you'll have to submit another service request and book another service visit.""How long will that take?" Pamela asked."I don't know. Once Dr. Schmidt gets back to Wallerny, there's no telling when he can return."Pamela was frantic. The orders were still waiting to be filled, after all. With no other choice, she gritted her teeth and asked, "Can't he just supply one himself?""The chances of someone carrying a specific screw on them are practically zero. You could always put the screw in yourselves once you find it."At this point, Pamela knew they had run out of time. She could only watch as Dr. Schmidt and his translator left the factory. She had just shelled out 12,000 dollars, yet nothing had been resolved. She stared at the massive

Third-Person POVLydia immediately called the manufacturer's engineer, Dr. Schmidt. Fortunately, he was still in the area. Unfortunately, his rates weren't cheap. After hanging up, Lydia looked nervously at Pamela."What are you staring at me for?" the latter snapped in annoyance. "Just spit it out!""Dr. Schmidt said he can come over, but the service call itself will be 3,000 dollars, and the final price will depend on what he finds. His hourly rate starts at 1,500 dollars."Pamela gritted her teeth. "How dare he charge prices like that? And the equipment is still under warranty too!""Do you want him to fix it or not, Ms. Thompson? If we don't get it repaired, production stays shut down, and we won't be able to fulfill this batch of orders. He's an overseas specialist. That's the kind of rate they charge."Pamela frowned deeply as she stared at the machinery sitting idle on the floor. Left with no other choice, she could only give in."Fine! Tell him to come."Once this ship

Drew's POVPamela's gaze turned cold and sharp."We were way too easy on you before, which made all of you lazy and complacent!" she barked. "From now on, you'll all do things my way. We're tightening attendance policies and enforcing strict schedules. Anyone who doesn't meet the standards will be let go!"The moment the words left her mouth, an uproar broke out among the workers.I just shrugged without saying a word. None of this had anything to do with me anymore.Still, the roar of the machinery from the production floor hit me somewhere deep inside. I looked at the factory sign by the entrance and instinctively reached out and brushed my fingers across it.I'd spent 40 years here. Now that even the factory sign had been replaced, it was my time to leave too.Behind me, I could still hear Pamela lecturing the workers, but I put it all out of my mind. When I got home, I got some bones and mushrooms and started making soup. As the ingredients bubbled away in the pot, the roar
