Regret

I was flying to New York for a billion-dollar project bid, rushing around to check our luggage, when my husband suddenly said, "Switch to the next flight. "The airline announced the flight was overbooked, so I already canceled your ticket." I froze. There were three of us traveling together. The female assistant was the one on standby. By rights, she should have been the one bumped. My husband explained, "Sophie's health is weak. She can't handle a transfer, and it'll be good for her to see a major bid up close. "Besides, you're just the technical consultant. It won't matter if you're late." What he didn't know was that without my core encryption key, that contract could never be signed.

Chapter 1
"Victor Palmerston, I'm the one who actually received the invitation. You're seriously making me switch flights for someone who's only tagging along?"Victor frowned, impatience flashing through his eyes."Sophie only graduated not long ago, and her health isn't good. The transfer wait is five hours. How is she supposed to handle that?"Sophie Lowell tugged at Victor's sleeve, her eyes reddening."Mr. Palmerston, maybe I should be the one to switch flights. Lydia is the technical consultant. The project can't happen without her. I'm just an assistant. It doesn't matter if I'm late. At worst, I'll spend the night at the airport."She coughed as she spoke.Victor immediately took her hand, his tone softening. "Don't be ridiculous. You just had a fever last week. The doctor said you shouldn't overexert yourself. This is a company decision. She doesn't get to object."Then he turned to me, his gaze hard again."Lydia Webb, do you think the whole company stops turning without you? S

My hand stiffened around my ID.Victor knew I would arrive tonight, but he had not even left me a place to sleep.I took out my phone and called him."You got here?" His voice was casual. "I thought you were throwing a tantrum and weren't coming."Sophie isn't adjusting well to the city. The standard rooms have poor soundproofing, so I canceled your room and upgraded hers to a suite. Just find a budget hotel nearby for one night."I forced down my anger. "Every hotel nearby is full because of tomorrow's bid. Where am I supposed to stay?"Victor clicked his tongue impatiently. "Sophie is fragile. Can you try to be a little considerate of other people?""I'm in the lobby."You have five minutes. If you don't come down, I'll call our partner and cancel the deal."In less than five minutes, the elevator doors opened.Victor stepped out in a bathrobe, his hair still half-damp. Sophie followed behind him in a woman's silk nightgown that obviously did not fit her.It was mine. I ha

Victor's eyes flickered. Then he raised his voice to hide his guilt."We're husband and wife. What's yours is mine. Now take out your computer and copy the files for Sophie."I stepped back and held my laptop bag against my chest."No."Victor sneered and waved at the lobby security guard."Security. This person isn't a hotel guest, and she's harassing us. Please remove her."The guard came over and looked me up and down. My clothes were soaked from the rain, and suspicion filled his eyes."Ma'am, please leave."Sophie tried to intervene. "Mr. Palmerston, it's still pouring outside. Lydia will get sick."Victor snorted."Let her get soaked. Maybe once enough water gets into her head, she'll finally wake up. Lydia, if you don't hand over the materials today, don't even think about coming through this door."The guard pushed me toward the revolving doors. I did not resist. I let the force move me outside.Cold rain drenched me instantly.Through the glass doors, I watched Vi

Victor's eyes reddened with panic."I don't care what method you use. Sophie cannot embarrass herself in front of all these people."I looked at him coldly."She can't be embarrassed. What about me? This is my life's work, and you want me to hand it over to her, then teach her step by step how to steal it from me?"Victor raised his hand and slapped me across the face. The crack of the slap rang sharply through the noisy venue entrance.People around us turned to stare. My face whipped to the side.Victor pointed at me, his voice shrill."Lydia Webb, don't push your luck. Without my company, your worthless code isn't worth a penny."I'm telling you now. If you don't hand it over today, I'll divorce you and leave you with nothing."Sophie grabbed Victor's arm."Maybe Lydia should present after all. I can step back."As she spoke, she deliberately stepped back and brought her high heel down hard on my laptop bag. Then she ground her heel into it twice.A sharp crack sounded

"Warning! Defense system collapsed!""Warning! Core data exposed!"In just ten seconds, the entire system was paralyzed. All that remained on the screen was a string of garbled code. The hall erupted.Sophie panicked. She hammered at the keyboard, cold sweat forming on her forehead."What's going on? It was working fine just now! Is something wrong with this computer?"The lead judge stood up, his face dark."Ms. Lowell, this is your company's core technology? It can't even withstand our most basic test virus. Are you wasting our time?"Victor shot to his feet and rushed onto the stage."Impossible! Our technology is industry-leading! There must be something wrong with your test system!"The lead judge sneered."Mr. Palmerston, our system has been tested countless times. Every other company today passed smoothly. Only yours collapsed on contact."More importantly, your system doesn't even contain a basic encryption key. This is an industry joke."Victor froze. Then he turn

I was sitting on a sofa in the airport lounge.Victor rushed in, out of breath. Sophie followed closely behind him.His clothes were messy, and his eyes were red.He strode up to me and grabbed my wrist."Lydia Webb, are you done making trouble?"Fifty million in damages. Are you trying to kill me?"I shook off his hand and looked at his anxious face."You're the one who brought Sophie to the bid. What does that have to do with me?"Victor glared at me, his nails nearly digging into his own palm."You're taking revenge!"You're angry because I gave her first class. You're angry because I gave her the suite. So you deliberately handed over a fake program."Annoyed, I stood and picked up the bag beside me."Think whatever you want. The bid failed. Now both of you can get out."Victor blocked my path with his arms spread wide.He clenched his jaw, and his tone softened slightly."I know you're jealous. I know you're mad at me."I just wanted to give Sophie a chance to prac

Airport security heard the commotion and came over."Ma'am, do you need assistance?"I pointed at Victor and Sophie."These two are not passengers. They're harassing me. Please remove them."Security immediately stepped in front of Victor."Sir, please show your boarding pass."Victor struggled, shoving at the security officers."Let go of me! I'm her husband! Lydia, you can't do this to me!"The officers dragged him away by force. When Sophie saw this, she turned and ran without looking back.Victor stared at her fleeing figure and shouted in despair."Sophie Lowell, you bitch! Come back here!"I picked up my suitcase and walked toward the gate.Victor's cries grew farther behind me."Lydia, please, I really know I was wrong!"I handed my boarding pass to the gate agent. She scanned the barcode.I walked out of the airport with my suitcase.A few days later, I arrived at the AstraTech building in New York. The CEO of AstraTech was my college roommate.I sat in the re

He rushed at me like a lunatic and tried to snatch the laptop bag from my hands."Give me the technology! That's my life's work!"I stepped aside and shoved him away.Victor shouted, "Lydia Webb, I'm your husband. You can't do this to me!"I looked at him coldly."Throw them out."Security seized Victor by the arms and dragged him away. Victor struggled desperately, grabbing the doorframe with both hands. Then he broke free from the guards. He stared at me."Lydia, have you forgotten how hard things were for us?"When we first started the company, we couldn't even pay for heating. We wrapped ourselves in one blanket just to stay warm."We stayed together through everything. Have you forgotten?"I looked at that familiar face and felt only nausea."You're living the good life now, aren't you?"You wear custom designer suits, take your little girlfriend in first class, and stay in executive suites."Isn't that exactly what you wanted?"Victor shook his head wildly, tears

Sophie grabbed Victor's wrist and shoved him hard to the floor."I'm slandering you? I know the mole on your inner thigh perfectly well. You're still trying to deny it?"Now that you're bankrupt, you want to use my baby to please Lydia? Dream on!"Victor sat on the floor, clutching his face and sobbing.I watched the two of them turn on each other and found it ridiculous.I took out my phone and opened a medical report from two years ago. Then I held the screen in front of Victor."Read it carefully."Victor stopped crying and lifted his head to glance at it.His eyes slowly widened until they looked like they might pop out."Azoospermia?"I put my phone away and looked down at him."Two years ago, I quietly had your sample tested. The doctor said you had no ability to father children."To protect your pride, I took the blame all this time and said I was the one with blocked fallopian tubes."The child in her belly, whoever it belongs to, cannot be yours."Victor was com

"She deliberately sabotaged the demonstration so you'd be forced to pay the breach penalty and go completely bankrupt."After Victor heard that, his entire body shook violently. His mouth hung open, but not a sound came out."I warned you many times that Sophie was suspicious."But you were blinded by your so-called favoritism. To protect her, you didn't hesitate to drive me away."You destroyed your company, your life's work, and our marriage with your own hands."Victor let out a howl of pain.He clawed at his hair and slapped himself across the face again and again."I was wrong! I was really wrong!"Lydia, I'm an idiot. She tricked me!"He crawled toward me and knocked his head against the floor. Each impact made a dull sound."Please. Talk to your mentor. Ask them to give me one more chance."If you help me, I'll give you the whole company. I'll leave with nothing!"I stepped back, avoiding his reaching hands."It's too late."My mentor has already decided to give
