Chapter 3

Author: Daphne
The next morning Sophie was still in intensive care. Evelyn had barely stepped out of the hospital doors before two internal investigators blocked her way.

"Ms. Reed, we need your cooperation with an internal data leak investigation."

Hartwell's unreleased quarterly figures and internal emails had been sent anonymously to several financial outlets the night before. The leak was traced to an old work account of hers that had long been deactivated.

Evelyn handed her car keys to the attorney accompanying her and remained reasonably composed. "Pull the raw server logs, and everything will be clear."

She was not genuinely alarmed. The system had never assigned guilt based on a few screenshots. After four years of marriage, even if Julian favored Claire, Evelyn still believed he could tell the difference between damage-control rhetoric and facts no one had the right to manipulate.

Yet she was wrong.

For the entire night, investigators held her phone and computer and pulled every access record. At first, she laid out a clear timeline of her night at the hospital. By three in the morning, when they asked for the third time why she still had access to the old system after the divorce, she had only one answer left.

"Pull the raw server logs."

At seven Julian came to the interview room himself and held out his coat. Evelyn did not take it.

"The lawyers have dealt with it. You can go."

As the elevator doors closed, Evelyn asked, "Did you find the real source of the login?"

Julian's brief silence filled Evelyn with dread.

"We did."

"Who?"

"A work device used by Claire's team."

Evelyn stopped.

"When did you confirm it?"

"Before the investigators came to question you."

The corridor was quiet enough for them to hear each other breathe. Evelyn remembered an earlier hotel accident, when Julian had declared before an entire conference room that what he despised most was sacrificing an innocent person to shield a company from public outrage.

It turned out that only applied when Claire could not be the one sacrificed.

"You knew the problem came from her team, yet you still let them question me all night?"

"I only asked you to cooperate with the investigation temporarily."

"Temporarily?"

"Our engagement has only just become public. If we reveal immediately that her team faked the login record, both Hartwell Group and Claire will be thrown into a public firestorm." Julian softened his tone. "None of this will stick to you. I'll take care of it."

"I sat in an interview room all night."

"Sorry you went through that."

Five weightless words, as if the entire ordeal were beneath notice.

The absurdity of it seized Evelyn. She had always assumed Julian simply did not love her. Now she understood that it was worse. He knew perfectly well that she would be hurt and that she was innocent. He merely calculated how much pain she could bear.

Julian saw the distance in her eyes and reached for her shoulder.

Evelyn stepped back.

"Evelyn."

"Don't touch me."

He stopped, then said quietly, "Next time, no matter what happens, I'll stand by you."

Evelyn looked at him.

"There isn't going to be a next time."

Julian dismissed it as a fit of temper and frowned. "Go home and rest. I'll have the lawyers prepare every document for tomorrow's hearing."

Evelyn stopped explaining. From that moment on, she stopped telling Julian when he hurt her and stopped hoping he would understand. She focused only on confirming when the travel restriction would be lifted, checking the handover documents, and securing Sophie's medical authorizations.

That night, a court notice arrived, scheduling an emergency hearing for the following morning. Once Hartwell submitted the raw server logs, the primary allegation against her could be dropped and the temporary hold on her passport lifted.

The flight she had booked five days earlier was scheduled to depart six hours after the hearing.

Evelyn looked at that ticket for a long time. She had stopped expecting Julian to choose her long ago. What was left was the smallest possible hope. Hand over the evidence and let me go.

Early the next morning came the judgment in Claire's case. She was found liable for fabricating evidence, obstructing the investigation, and related civil claims. Robert Reed was permanently pushed out of the highest business circles, and the Reed family could never again use its influence to force Evelyn into marriage.Julian did not come to say goodbye in person. His lawyer delivered a final set of signed documents. Hartwell permanently abandoned any acquisition of the block where Bennett Restoration stood. The seaside hotel would be co-managed with the local historic preservation trust. Evelyn was formally released from every non-disclosure agreement she had signed. No Hartwell employee was permitted to investigate, follow, or approach Evelyn or her family in a private capacity. The townhouse, which had changed hands several times, had been sold, and every dollar of the proceeds went into the accessibility design fund Sophie managed herself.Evelyn read all of it and signed the rece

After the hearing closed, Julian had his lawyer send three documents. The first compensated Evelyn for the equity value lost through four years of severely undervalued work. The second fully restored her joint credit on every project she had worked on. The third established an accessibility design fund under Sophie's sole control, with Hartwell providing the money, taking no naming rights and no part in running it.Evelyn read through every document word for word and calmly signed to accept what she had earned through her own labor. She did not have to turn down every cent to prove she understood the full picture. Part of the money went into an education trust for Lily, and the rest went toward running the studio. When the last hearing ended, Sophie pushed open the meeting room door herself from her wheelchair. When Evelyn saw her again after three years, her eyes reddened. She did not rush forward to hug her. She crouched first and checked that the wheelchair brakes were locked.Sophi

Three hours after the story broke, reporters were already blocking the studio door, and a photograph of Lily had been published online. Evelyn's palms went cold the moment she saw it. She did not care what anyone said about her, but the photograph showed Lily's face clearly.Rumors spread everywhere. "Did Evelyn Reed stage her own disappearance three years ago?" "Did the Bennett family help her conceal her identity and evade the investigation?" A number of longtime clients, afraid of being dragged into Hartwell's scandal, canceled their contracts.Back at the house Evelyn dragged out a suitcase that had sat untouched for years and started packing documents and clothes. Noah watched her."Moving again?""The reporters have Lily in their sights.""Where?""Away from here, for now."For the past three years, this had been her most familiar response: whenever danger appeared, she changed her number, her home, and her city. Halfway through packing, Lily ran over with a drawing and solemnly

A week later, the studio received notice from the bank. The debt on its commercial loan, which was about to be renewed, had been purchased by a Hartwell financial subsidiary. When Evelyn finished reading the email, her first reaction was not fear but a wave of fury. Three years earlier, Julian had tried to decide when she was allowed to leave New York. Now his reach extended to Noah, Lily, and the studio she had poured her heart into. She called the bank to confirm, and the voice on the other end was courteous. "Hartwell is offering a lower interest rate and a longer repayment period."Evelyn asked, "What if I repay the entire loan early?""You can, but there would be an early repayment penalty.""Send me the breakdown."She hung up and called Noah into the office."Roughly how much could we recover if we sold off our equipment?"Noah looked at her. "You're planning to move?""Yes.""Where to?""Further north, or back to Canada."Noah did not tell her to calm down. He turned the laptop

The day after the reunion Julian asked to speak with her alone. Evelyn agreed only to the studio's meeting room, with the glass door open and Noah and the staff in the room next door.Julian took in the arrangement and said nothing about it."Why didn't you tell me you were alive?"Her hand paused on the file. "Tell you what?""That you were alive.""Why would I owe you that?""I looked for you for three years.""That was your choice.""Evelyn.""Julian, three years ago, when I was under investigation, you had the raw logs, the lawyers, and all the authority you needed. Every single time, you had the power to protect me. Every single time, you told me to wait and said you would deal with it later." Evelyn raised her eyes to him."I dealt with Claire," Julian said."I know.""Her team was investigated, Hartwell ended all business with the Reed family, and Sophie's treatment was fully funded—""Those things should have happened anyway." There was no edge in Evelyn's voice. "I also know y

On the day the Hartwell project team arrived in Camden, the wind came hard off the sea. Julian got to the seaside hotel half an hour early. It had stood empty for more than ten years, and salt corrosion had left its exterior walls mottled. The project manager handed him the partner file. "The best-regarded local restoration firm is Bennett Restoration. The lead partner is Noah Bennett, and the other partner is listed as E. Bennett."Julian skimmed the page. Five minutes before the meeting, the door opened and a woman walked in carrying a roll of drawings.Julian's hand went rigid on the table. It was Evelyn.Three years of search records, the police report declaring her missing, the scarf recovered from the river. Every settled fact collapsed in that second. She stood in the doorway with her hair cut short, wearing an old denim jacket and not a trace of makeup. Evelyn saw him too. Her heart dropped, and her fingers tightened around the drawings before she could stop them. The first thi
