Chapter 4

Author: Daphne
On the fifth day, rain hammered New York.

Evelyn carried the last suitcase out of the apartment, leaving the rooms empty behind her. At ten, she took her seat in the hearing room. The investigators formally asked Hartwell to produce the raw server logs.

Her lawyer told her quietly that once the logs were filed, the primary allegation against her could be dropped and the travel restriction lifted.

Evelyn looked across at Julian. He looked tired and entirely calm. Yesterday he had promised that next time he would be on her side. She did not need him to favor her. She only needed him not to stand in the way of her getting out.

The court adjourned for ten minutes.

In the corridor outside, Claire stopped Julian. Through the glass, Evelyn could not hear the beginning of their conversation, but Claire's voice came through clearly when it rose. "Four years ago you promised me you would never let me be the one Hartwell sacrificed."

Julian said nothing.

"Are you breaking your promise? Was your love for me a lie? This will ruin me. She's already carrying the blame, so let her keep it. Even if she's falsely accused, you'll still be there to protect her. We only have to protect ourselves, don't we?"

The hearing resumed and Hartwell's lawyer stood.

"We request a delay in producing the raw logs while we complete further technical verification."

Evelyn's fingers closed slowly.

The judge frowned and brought down the gavel. "The evidence has not been fully verified. The temporary travel restriction on Ms. Reed remains in effect."

She had missed her flight for good.

When it ended, Julian came after her into the corridor.

"It's only a delay."

Evelyn did not stop walking.

"Two days at most. Then I'll have the restriction lifted."

Evelyn stopped. Julian expected her to finally lash out at him, but she only asked calmly, "When can I have my passport back?"

Julian paused. "Evelyn, I said I would handle it."

"I know." Evelyn nodded. "So when, exactly?"

In that moment she could barely feel even disappointment. The hurt was still there. The layers of feeling around it had simply been used up. She did not want to remind him of yesterday's promise, and she did not want to ask why it was always Claire first. Those answers had stopped meaning anything.

Reporters packed the entrance to the courthouse. Someone had leaked word that she was barred from leaving the country.

"Ms. Reed, are you trying to take revenge on Hartwell Group?"

"You were already planning to leave New York three days ago. Were you trying to evade the investigation?"

"Is there more to your divorce from Mr. Hartwell?"

Evelyn answered none of it. The car emerged from the underground garage with several news vans in close pursuit.

The rain intensified, and visibility on the overpass dropped to almost nothing. A camera vehicle forced its way in from the right for a better shot and kept crowding their car. The driver wrenched the wheel, the tires sliced through standing water, and the car lost traction.

Evelyn heard the barrier tear, and in the next second the whole car went over.

Icy river water surged into the car. The seat belt pinned her body, and the door would not budge. In those few seconds, there was no Julian in her mind, no Claire, not even the canceled ticket. One thought remained: “Live. I have to get out.”

She smashed the side window with all her strength, but the violent current dragged her away. Her memories after that splintered into fragments: shouting in her ears, then a pair of hands grabbing her.

When she opened her eyes again, the first thing she saw was the harsh white ceiling light of an unfamiliar clinic. Noah sat beside the bed, as slim as ever, with the same look in his eyes that she remembered from years ago.

Evelyn's lips moved. The first thing she said was, "The plane... has it already left?"

Noah was silent for two seconds, then answered honestly. "It has."

Evelyn closed her eyes. The television was running a news broadcast with an old identification photograph of her on the screen.

"Hartwell's former wife plunged into the river during the storm. Police have yet to locate her..."

The remembered suffocation of icy water flooding her lungs still clung to Evelyn. Then came Sophie's injuries, the endless investigation, and the tangled litigation. Beneath all that weight came an almost shameful sense of release.

If everyone believed she was dead, then no one could decide where she went, determine when she was allowed to leave, or force her to carry someone else's blame.

Noah put her old phone on the nightstand. "Do you want to tell them you're alive?"

Evelyn did not answer at once. After a long time she took out the SIM card and snapped it in two herself.

"Take me home."

Noah asked no further questions and tucked the blanket around her. The rain was still pouring outside, and Evelyn understood with perfect clarity that she had finally left Julian's world for good.

Early the next morning came the judgment in Claire's case. She was found liable for fabricating evidence, obstructing the investigation, and related civil claims. Robert Reed was permanently pushed out of the highest business circles, and the Reed family could never again use its influence to force Evelyn into marriage.Julian did not come to say goodbye in person. His lawyer delivered a final set of signed documents. Hartwell permanently abandoned any acquisition of the block where Bennett Restoration stood. The seaside hotel would be co-managed with the local historic preservation trust. Evelyn was formally released from every non-disclosure agreement she had signed. No Hartwell employee was permitted to investigate, follow, or approach Evelyn or her family in a private capacity. The townhouse, which had changed hands several times, had been sold, and every dollar of the proceeds went into the accessibility design fund Sophie managed herself.Evelyn read all of it and signed the rece

After the hearing closed, Julian had his lawyer send three documents. The first compensated Evelyn for the equity value lost through four years of severely undervalued work. The second fully restored her joint credit on every project she had worked on. The third established an accessibility design fund under Sophie's sole control, with Hartwell providing the money, taking no naming rights and no part in running it.Evelyn read through every document word for word and calmly signed to accept what she had earned through her own labor. She did not have to turn down every cent to prove she understood the full picture. Part of the money went into an education trust for Lily, and the rest went toward running the studio. When the last hearing ended, Sophie pushed open the meeting room door herself from her wheelchair. When Evelyn saw her again after three years, her eyes reddened. She did not rush forward to hug her. She crouched first and checked that the wheelchair brakes were locked.Sophi

Three hours after the story broke, reporters were already blocking the studio door, and a photograph of Lily had been published online. Evelyn's palms went cold the moment she saw it. She did not care what anyone said about her, but the photograph showed Lily's face clearly.Rumors spread everywhere. "Did Evelyn Reed stage her own disappearance three years ago?" "Did the Bennett family help her conceal her identity and evade the investigation?" A number of longtime clients, afraid of being dragged into Hartwell's scandal, canceled their contracts.Back at the house Evelyn dragged out a suitcase that had sat untouched for years and started packing documents and clothes. Noah watched her."Moving again?""The reporters have Lily in their sights.""Where?""Away from here, for now."For the past three years, this had been her most familiar response: whenever danger appeared, she changed her number, her home, and her city. Halfway through packing, Lily ran over with a drawing and solemnly

A week later, the studio received notice from the bank. The debt on its commercial loan, which was about to be renewed, had been purchased by a Hartwell financial subsidiary. When Evelyn finished reading the email, her first reaction was not fear but a wave of fury. Three years earlier, Julian had tried to decide when she was allowed to leave New York. Now his reach extended to Noah, Lily, and the studio she had poured her heart into. She called the bank to confirm, and the voice on the other end was courteous. "Hartwell is offering a lower interest rate and a longer repayment period."Evelyn asked, "What if I repay the entire loan early?""You can, but there would be an early repayment penalty.""Send me the breakdown."She hung up and called Noah into the office."Roughly how much could we recover if we sold off our equipment?"Noah looked at her. "You're planning to move?""Yes.""Where to?""Further north, or back to Canada."Noah did not tell her to calm down. He turned the laptop

The day after the reunion Julian asked to speak with her alone. Evelyn agreed only to the studio's meeting room, with the glass door open and Noah and the staff in the room next door.Julian took in the arrangement and said nothing about it."Why didn't you tell me you were alive?"Her hand paused on the file. "Tell you what?""That you were alive.""Why would I owe you that?""I looked for you for three years.""That was your choice.""Evelyn.""Julian, three years ago, when I was under investigation, you had the raw logs, the lawyers, and all the authority you needed. Every single time, you had the power to protect me. Every single time, you told me to wait and said you would deal with it later." Evelyn raised her eyes to him."I dealt with Claire," Julian said."I know.""Her team was investigated, Hartwell ended all business with the Reed family, and Sophie's treatment was fully funded—""Those things should have happened anyway." There was no edge in Evelyn's voice. "I also know y

On the day the Hartwell project team arrived in Camden, the wind came hard off the sea. Julian got to the seaside hotel half an hour early. It had stood empty for more than ten years, and salt corrosion had left its exterior walls mottled. The project manager handed him the partner file. "The best-regarded local restoration firm is Bennett Restoration. The lead partner is Noah Bennett, and the other partner is listed as E. Bennett."Julian skimmed the page. Five minutes before the meeting, the door opened and a woman walked in carrying a roll of drawings.Julian's hand went rigid on the table. It was Evelyn.Three years of search records, the police report declaring her missing, the scarf recovered from the river. Every settled fact collapsed in that second. She stood in the doorway with her hair cut short, wearing an old denim jacket and not a trace of makeup. Evelyn saw him too. Her heart dropped, and her fingers tightened around the drawings before she could stop them. The first thi
