Adriana

Vincent’s face twisted into something ugly and unrecognizable. He lunged across the stage, his hands reaching directly for my throat. I didn't flinch. I didn't take a single step backward.

Before his fingers could graze the fabric of my blazer, two massive security guards materialized from the stage wings. They slammed into Vincent, tackling him hard around the waist. The impact sent all three of them crashing onto the polished floor. The microphone stand tipped over, emitting a sharp, high-pitched shriek of feedback that made half the ballroom wince and cover their ears.

"Get off me!" Vincent roared, thrashing wildly against the guards. His perfectly styled golden hair fell into his panicked eyes, ruining his fairy-tale image. "Adriana, tell them to let me go! You can't do this to me!"

"Adriana Elise Mercado!"

I turned. My stepmother, Patricia, was rushing up the side stairs of the stage. Her face was pale beneath her thick foundation. Right behind her was Vincent’s mother, Mrs. Alvarado, clutching her pearls as if she were the victim of a terrible crime.

Patricia reached me and grabbed my arm, her manicured nails digging painfully into my sleeve. "Have you completely lost your mind? Tell the technician to cut the feed right now. You are making a fool of your father!"

I looked down at her hand, then back up to her face. My expression remained entirely blank. "Take your hand off me, Patricia. Now."

She hesitated, intimidated by my cold tone, and slowly let go. But Vincent's mother stepped forward, pointing a trembling finger at me.

"Don't listen to her, she is sick!" Mrs. Alvarado shouted to the crowd, trying to project her voice over the rising murmurs of the reporters. "Look at her! She’s having a breakdown. The wedding planning has ruined her nerves. None of this is true!"

Patricia nodded frantically, jumping on the narrative they had used against the original Adriana for years. "Exactly. She hasn’t been taking her medication. Please, everyone, excuse my stepdaughter. We are going to get her the help she needs."

They were trying to gaslight me in front of hundreds of people. They actually thought they could spin my exposure of Vincent's infidelity into a symptom of feminine hysteria. The original Adriana might have cried or screamed in frustration, trapped by their lies.

I simply brought the microphone back to my lips.

"I am not sick, Patricia," I said, my voice projecting crisp and clear through the speakers. "And I am not unstable."

I turned my attention to Vincent’s mother. The older woman glared at me, confident that her social standing and wealth would protect her from my accusations. She was entirely wrong.

"Mrs. Alvarado," I continued, making sure the society reporters caught every single syllable. "You might want to stop worrying about my mental health and start worrying about your housing situation. As of twenty minutes ago, the platinum credit cards in your purse have been frozen. They will decline if you try to buy a cup of coffee on your way home."

The color rapidly drained from her face. "You... you can't do that."

"I can, and I did," I replied evenly. "Furthermore, the keys to the Bentley you drove to this event have already been confiscated by my security team in the valet line. It was purchased under Mercado Holdings, which means it legally belongs to me. You will be taking a taxi tonight."

Vincent stopped thrashing on the floor, staring up at me in pure horror. The guards kept him pinned, his bespoke tuxedo wrinkling against the hardwood stage.

"And finally," I said, my gaze sweeping over the Alvarado family, "the estate you currently live in is a Mercado property. My legal counsel, Godwin Camron Andrews, has already filed the eviction notice. You have forty-eight hours to pack your bags and vacate the premises. If you take so much as a silver spoon that belongs to my family, I will have you arrested for theft."

The ballroom erupted. The whispers turned into loud, pointing accusations. The elite of Bellhaven were vultures, and they smelled blood in the water. The Alvarados were no longer high society; they were broke, exposed fraudsters who had just been stripped of everything on a public stage.

"You spoiled brat!" Patricia hissed, stepping dangerously close to me. "Your father will strip you of your shares for this! You are ruining the merger!"

"There is no merger," I said softly, ensuring the microphone didn't catch my words this time. "And my father doesn't have the voting power to stop me. You should go comfort him. He looks like he’s about to pass out."

I gestured toward the front row. My father, Roberto, was clutching his chest, his face purple with rage as investors and reporters bombarded him with angry questions. He had enabled Vincent’s behavior to secure a business deal, and now he was paying the price.

I handed the microphone to a stunned event coordinator who was hovering near the curtain. My work here was done.

As I walked to the edge of the stage and descended the short staircase, the massive crowd parted for me. Nobody dared to speak to me, let alone block my path. The society matrons who had judged my tailored suit ten minutes ago now looked at me with open fear.

I scanned the room one last time and locked eyes with Gabriel Thomas Reyes.

He was still sitting at his VIP table. The chaos of the room seemed to flow around him, never touching him. He wasn't looking at the screens displaying the banking transfers, or at Vincent struggling on the floor, or at the screaming mothers. He was looking directly at me.

His dark eyes held a sharp, intense fascination. He looked at me like I was the most dangerous, interesting person in the room. He raised his glass of amber liquor, offering me a slow, silent toast. A promise.

I didn't smile, but I gave him a single, shallow nod of acknowledgment. He knew exactly what I had just done. I hadn't just broken an engagement; I had executed a flawless financial slaughter. And he loved it.

I turned away and walked out of the ballroom.

Reporters shouted my name, camera flashes lighting up the corridor, but my personal security team formed a tight wall around me, pushing them back and clearing a path to the elevators.

"Miss Mercado! Is it true Vincent Alvarado stole millions?"

"Are you stepping down as Chairwoman?"

"Miss Mercado, over here!"

I ignored all of them. I stepped into the private VIP elevator and swiped my access card. The heavy doors slid shut, cutting off the noise, the shouting, and the blinding lights.

I leaned back against the cool metal wall of the elevator and let out a long, slow breath. My hands were shaking slightly. Not from fear, but from the sheer adrenaline of the confrontation.

The original Adriana had died feeling helpless, betrayed, and completely alone. She had let these people dictate her worth and destroy her reputation to protect their own secrets. Tonight, I had taken a sledgehammer to their comfortable lives.

But this was only the first step. Ruining Vincent didn't stop the apocalypse. It didn't stop the viral outbreak from sweeping across the country in three short months. The money Vincent had already funneled to Bianca Serrano’s offshore accounts was likely funding the survival compound they planned to hide in. I still needed to gather my own resources, build a fortress, and recruit the men who could help me survive what was coming.

The elevator dinged softly, arriving at the underground VIP parking garage. The doors opened to a quiet, dimly lit expanse of concrete.

It was entirely too quiet.

Usually, this private level was staffed with valets, security personnel, and private drivers waiting for their wealthy employers. Tonight, the valet stand was completely empty. The air felt heavy, pressing uncomfortably against my skin.

I stepped out of the elevator. The sharp click of my heels echoed loudly against the thick concrete pillars. I pulled my phone from my blazer pocket, intending to call my personal driver to bring the car around, but the screen displayed no signal.

A prickle of genuine unease ran down my spine. The hotel had reinforced cell towers installed in the basement to ensure the VIP guests never lost service. I should have had full reception. Someone was using a signal jammer.

I quickened my pace, moving toward the designated spot where my sleek silver car was parked. The shadows between the concrete pillars seemed to stretch and shift. Every instinct I had honed as a risk analyst screamed that something was terribly wrong. Vincent’s public humiliation was supposed to keep his family occupied with damage control, but what if he had planned a backup measure? What if his investors or Bianca's family were already retaliating to protect their secrets?

I reached into my pocket, my fingers closing tightly around the small canister of pepper spray I had packed this morning. It wasn't much against mercenaries, but it was better than being empty-handed.

I was thirty feet away from my car when the tense silence finally shattered.

The loud screech of heavy tires echoed through the garage, bouncing off the concrete walls. Headlights flared, blindingly bright, cutting through the dim lighting and forcing me to raise an arm to shield my eyes.

A black, unmarked van sped around the corner, completely ignoring the painted parking lanes. It swerved violently and slammed on the brakes, stopping sideways to block my path to my vehicle.

I stopped moving, my heart hammering furiously against my ribs.

The engine rumbled loudly in the enclosed space. For a split second, nobody moved. The tinted windows hid the occupants from view. Then, the heavy side door of the van slid open with a harsh, grating scrape of metal.

  • Five Men for the Doomed Villainess   Designing The Fortress

AdrianaMy father stood frozen, his eyes wide as he stared at the massive, heavily tattooed man standing between us. Rafael didn't even flinch when Roberto crashed into his chest. He just looked down at him with dark, unforgiving eyes."Step back, Mr. Mercado," Rafael said. His voice lacked any warmth, sitting low and dangerous in the quiet office. "The Chairwoman is busy."Roberto’s face flushed a deep, mottled red. He straightened his rumpled suit jacket, trying to recover the authority he had just lost by bouncing off my new head of security. He pointed a trembling finger at me, leaning around Rafael's broad shoulder."Have you lost your mind, Adriana?" Roberto shouted. "Do you have any idea what you did last night? You humiliated Vincent in front of the entire city! The Alvarado merger is dead. The board is threatening a massive sell-off because of your childish tantrum. You are destroying this family!"I remained seated behind my desk. I didn't raise my voice. I simply opened the

RafaelThe rhythmic beep of the heart monitor was the only sound in the sterile room. I sat in a rigid plastic chair, staring at the steady rise and fall of my younger brother’s chest. The smell of bleach and stale coffee coated the back of my throat. It was the scent of waiting rooms. The scent of bad news delivered in hushed voices by people in white coats.Daniel was finally asleep. He looked too pale against the thin hospital sheets, his twenty-three-year-old frame reduced to sharp angles and hollowed cheeks after the accident that had nearly severed his spine. The surgeons told me he would walk again. That was the good news. The catch was the next six months of intensive surgical rehabilitation required to make it happen. The billing department had handed me an itemized estimate yesterday. It looked like a ransom demand.I rubbed a hand over my face, feeling the rough stubble along my jawline. My knuckles still ached faintly from the fight in the hotel parking garage last night.

AdrianaThe heavy side door of the black van slid open with a harsh, grating scrape of steel against steel.Four men piled out onto the concrete floor of the parking garage. They wore unmarked dark clothing, thick tactical boots, and black masks pulled securely over the lower halves of their faces. They didn’t carry firearms, which told me everything I needed to know in a fraction of a second. If they wanted me dead, they would have just shot me through the tinted windows before I even realized they were waiting in the shadows.Instead, they carried collapsible metal batons and crackling stun guns. They wanted to take me alive.Vincent was a coward, but his investors and Bianca’s family were not. My public termination of his access to the Mercado fortune had triggered an immediate, vicious response. If they dragged me into the back of that van and forced me to reverse the financial lockdown, they could save their survival funds. The timeline was already shifting, reacting to my choice

  • Five Men for the Doomed Villainess   Canceling The Wedding

AdrianaThe ballroom of the Bellhaven Grand Hotel was a sea of imported white roses and cascading crystal. A string quartet played softly in the corner, entirely drowned out by the chatter of the city’s wealthiest elites. Waiters in crisp black vests drifted through the crowd, carrying silver trays loaded with vintage champagne. The original Adriana had spent six months planning this engagement party. She had personally selected the silk draperies, the lighting, the menu, and the guest list. She had wanted everything to be perfect for the man she loved, blind to the fact that he was only using her to fund his survival in the coming apocalypse.I stood near the grand archway, looking at the display of wealth, and felt nothing but cold resolve."There is my beautiful bride."A hand slid around my waist, pulling me firmly against a tailored tuxedo. I didn't flinch, though my skin crawled at the contact. I turned my head and met the smiling face of Vincent Carlo Alvarado. He looked exactl

AdrianaMy skull throbbed like someone had taken a hammer to my temples. I groaned, dragging a hand across my face to block out the piercing morning light, and felt something cold scratch against my cheek.I pulled my hand back and stared. A massive, emerald-cut diamond ring caught the sunlight streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows.I sat up, my heart suddenly racing, the heavy silk sheets pooling around my waist. This was not my apartment. My apartment was cramped and always smelled like cheap coffee, damp brick, and old paper. My apartment had caught fire last night. I remembered the thick, toxic smoke filling my lungs. I remembered the blistering heat peeling the paint off my walls. I remembered collapsing on the floor, my last conscious thought consumed by how my younger sister was going to pay her college tuition without my income. So why was I sitting in a sprawling luxury penthouse, breathing clean, air-conditioned air, and wearing a diamond that cost more than my enti
