Chapter 3

Author: Meow
"Charlotte, are you really taking the 6 a.m. train back tomorrow morning?"

My cousin Ezra Coleman asked, his voice kept low over the phone.

"The ticket is already bought."

"What about Daisy?"

"She's coming with me."

"Hasn't she always wanted to see the ocean? I'll head over to Grandma's old house first and get it cleaned up."

"Okay."

I placed the pink urn on the only table in the tiny basement apartment, then carefully covered it with a white cloth.

The moment I set my phone down, the wooden door was kicked open with a loud thud.

Theo stood in the doorway, the cuffs of his pants splattered with mud.

"Your location sharing was still turned on. Where else did you think you could hide?"

He looked at my face first, then shoved the thermal flask he was holding into my hands. "Here, tea. Drink it while it's hot. You got soaked by the rain last night. Don't give yourself another cold."

"Get out."

"Change out of those wet socks first." He pulled a new pair of socks from a paper bag and bent over to set them by my feet. "Even if you're mad at me, there's no need to stay in a dump like this."

"I'm leaving tomorrow anyway."

Theo acted as if he hadn't heard a word, pulling out a document and pressing it onto the table. When the edge of the paper brushed against the white cloth, I immediately reached out to steady the urn.

"What's this?"

"A property settlement agreement."

"My mother's blood pressure spiked because of you, and she insists on having some security. Just sign it. The apartment and all my savings will belong to the Grahams." He said it so casually. "It's just a formality. It won't affect our daily life, and we're still doing the wedding photoshoot."

"The wedding is canceled."

"Stop throwing a fit."

"And I want a divorce."

Theo went silent for a couple of seconds. He raised his hand to gather my disheveled collar. "Are you done venting?"

"No."

"You've been by my side for seven whole years. Are you really going to throw me away over a few minutes from last night?"

"Yes."

A faint smile touched his lips, though his eyes remained completely cold. "Charlotte, I know you're upset that I saved Sophia first. But you're stronger than her, and Daisy always powers through her asthma attacks. I thought the rescue team would be right behind me."

"You thought?"

"Yes, I misjudged the time. But I'll make it up to you now." He grabbed my wrist, forcing the pen into my palm. "Sign it, come to Sophia's birthday party tonight to offer her a toast and clear the air, and we'll put this whole thing behind us."

"We're never putting this behind us."

"Her depression just stabilized, and because of what you said earlier, she's been crying all morning."

"Then let her keep crying."

"You never used to be like this."

"Daisy used to be alive, too."

His grip on my wrist tightened instantly. "Don't you dare use our daughter to talk about death."

"Daisy doesn't need your medicine anymore."

"Alright, that's enough angry talk." Theo pressed the pen down onto the paper, his voice dropping an octave. "She's my daughter too. You can be mad at me, but don't talk about her like that."

I stared straight into his eyes.

In that single moment, I realized I was ridiculously still waiting for him to ask one question: Where is Daisy?

But he never did.

"There's a new biological treatment that just arrived at Children's Hospital, and I pulled strings to get her name on the list.

If you don't come apologize tonight, all it takes is one phone call from me and her name is crossed off. From then on, you can try finding specialists and long-term preions all on your own."

"You're using our daughter's life to force me into apologizing to Sophia?"

"I'm teaching you not to act on impulse." He pushed the agreement back in front of me. "Charlotte, you always listen to me in the end. Why make things so ugly for yourself?"

I picked up the document and threw it straight into the bucket in the corner.

Theo closed his eyes. "Fine. You're emotional right now, so I won't argue with you."

He gestured toward the door, and two drivers stepped inside.

"Please escort my wife to the car."

I took a step back. "Theo, don't you dare."

"It's just a dinner." He draped his coat over my shoulders, meticulously buttoning the very top button. "Don't hurt her, especially her wrists."

The two men grabbed me by both arms. I broke free once, only to be pinned right back down.

"Let go of me!"

"The party will take ten minutes tops." Theo picked up the thermal flask from the table, still without looking beneath the white cloth. "Once you offer the toast, we go home. I bought gifts for both you and Daisy."

Right before I was forced into the car, I slipped my phone deep into my coat pocket and sent my exact location to Ezra.

[In the basement apartment. Take the box on the table. Don't let anyone touch it.]

The car doors locked with a heavy click.

Theo placed a small strawberry bear-shaped cake onto my lap.

"This is for Daisy. Don't crush it."

"Charlotte, you're here."Theo leaned against the edge of the bed and sat up, a faint smile actually gracing his face.A nurse was in the middle of replacing his bed pad. "Family members, please step outside and wait a moment.""She's not family," he blurted out before quickly changing his words. "Well, she still is right now."I stood outside the doorway, waiting until the nurse finished taking away the soiled bedding.Theo had no sensation in his lower body. For the rest of his life, he would be completely dependent on a wheelchair and daily nursing care.Sitting right on the bedside table was that patched-up Play-Doh figure."Did Mandy's mom tell you that I could sit up now?""No.""Then did you come to see me?"I placed the divorce agreement in front of him."Sign it."The smile on his face froze completely. "I thought...""You thought what?""That day, you signed the consent form for my emergency surgery.""I was the only person at the scene who could sign it.""An

Don't wait! The hurricane made landfall early!"Theo went door to door, knocking and helping elderly townspeople with mobility issues get onto the emergency transport vehicles first. When he passed by me, he paused."Let me carry the box for you.""No need.""Then stay right behind me.""Focus on yourself."He didn't say another word, but he carefully tucked a spare pediatric inhaler into his emergency bag.Suddenly, Jenna Thomas ran back from the end of the line, her voice frantic. "Is this your medical report?"Theo stared at the date, his fingers pressing heavily into the paper."You were at the flea market that day too?""I was.""But after I woke up in the hospital, my mother told me you fell at home...""She lied to you.""This says emergency C-section..." His voice began to falter. "Was Daisy born that night?""Yes."Sophia scrambled forward to snatch the paper. "Theo, medical records can easily be forged. She's just trying to drive a wedge between us!"I brought up the payment receipt on my phone. "The invoice number, timestamp, and admission ID are all here. Look it up yourself."Theo didn't reach for the phone."What really happened back then?""You were cornered by debt collectors outside the warehouse. They came at you with wooden planks, so I threw myself in front of you and took a blow straight to the stomach."After you passed out, I called the ambulance. "Charlotte, a hundred thousand dollars. Sign the papers."Sophia tossed a duffel bag onto the table. Several stacks of cash spilled out from the top.Two of her friends stood right behind her, one holding up a phone and recording."Turn the camera off," I said, looking straight at her.The woman holding the phone took a step back nervously. "We're just keeping a record for evidence, so you don't take the money and play dumb later."Sophia pulled off her sunglasses. "Theo canceled my cards and stopped paying my rent, and it's all because you're acting like a tragic victim in front of him!""Then go take it up with him.""He's out of his mind right now. He only listens to you. As long as you sign the divorce papers, I can take him back to the city, and you won't have to see his face every day either."I didn't touch the bag of money. "He was garbage to begin with. If you want him, feel free to pick him up."Sophia's expression darkened. "Don't think that just because Daisy is de

"Charlotte, you're scaling the fish backward! You're tearing the skin right off."My aunt took my hand and turned the knife in the right direction."I'm sorry.""Why are you apologizing to me? Didn't you know how to do this before?""I forgot."In the two weeks since returning to the coastal fishing town, I kept forgetting things. I forgot to turn off the faucet or whether I had already added salt, and I would still reflexively set out a small extra bowl during dinner.Daisy's urn sat inside the wooden cabinet my grandmother left behind, right next to her unused nebulizer mask."Charlotte, there's a man kneeling outside!" The neighbor's little girl ran inside, holding half a piece of rice cake in her hand. "He says his name is Theo."I walked over to the front door.Theo had lost a lot of weight. "You're only asking now? What, were you waiting to host her memorial service first?"Dr. Stevenson's voice echoed relentlessly through the speaker."Her mother signed the death certificate all by herself. She took her to be cremated all by herself. And you, the father, didn't even pick up your phone!"The phone slipped right out of Theo's hand, crashing onto the floor."Which Daisy?" he stammered, bending down to pick up the phone. His fingers trembled so violently that he tried and failed several times to get a grip on it. "Could it be someone with the same name? Dr. Stevenson sees dozens of kids every single day. He must have gotten it wrong!"No one answered.Sophia was the first to react. "Theo, Charlotte might have just taken someone else's death certificate... She loves Daisy so much. How could she wait until today to say anything—"Theo shoved her away before she could finish.Sophia stumbled and collapsed right next to the shattered pieces of glass, a sharp shard slic
