Chapter 4

Author: Meow
"Oh look, Theo actually brought her over."

"Dressed like that to a birthday party? If I didn't know better, I'd think a beggar wandered in."

The chatter in the private dining room ground to a halt. Over a dozen pairs of eyes locked onto me at once.

Theo pulled out the chair right beside him. "Everyone, cut it out. She's my wife."

He turned to look at me, his voice soft. "Offer your apology and sit down to eat. I had the kitchen save some of that salmon you like."

Debra scoffed loudly. "Who'd dare let her sit? She was just talking about Sophia dying earlier today, and now she doesn't even bother putting on decent clothes."

Ava chimed in with a smug laugh, "Charlotte's sweater is practically washed out. Guess she was too busy hiding Daisy to bother dressing up."

Someone at the table asked, "Is the kid actually sick?"

Debra waved her hand dismissively. "That's just how she raises her kid. Daisy sneezes twice, and she acts like she needs to call an ambulance. Let's not ruin the mood with bad vibes."

Sophia cut them off, picking up a glass of wine and walking right up to me. She was dressed in a stunning off-the-shoulder gown, and the IV bandage on the back of her hand was gone.

"Charlotte, I know Daisy's sick, and you're in a bad mood," Sophia said gently. "If you drink this, we can just pretend nothing happened last night."

I stared at her. "Didn't you have a high fever?"

Sophia's smile faltered for a fraction of a second. "It broke."

"Broke fast, didn't it?"

"The doctor said I have a strong constitution. Once the IV was done, I was fine."

Debra slammed her hand on the table. "Sophia is being magnanimous! What are you still nitpicking for? Take the tea and kneel, don't be be a buzzkiller!"

Sophia quickly shook her head. "Debra, there's no need for that! I'm already so happy that Charlotte made it."

"Well, she should," Ava demanded, pointing her phone camera right at me. "Talking about someone like that brings terrible luck. And apologizing won't kill her."

Theo reached out and pushed Ava's phone down. "Put that away."

He turned his focus back to me. "Charlotte, do as I say."

"I'm not apologizing."

"Don't make me repeat myself."

"Then shut your mouth."

Gasps echoed around the table.

Sophia's eyes welled with tears. "Theo, forget it. Charlotte clearly hates me. I'll just leave."

"Where are you going? It's your birthday." Theo held her by the shoulder, guiding her back into her seat.

Then, he stood up and walked over to me, carefully straightening my disheveled coat.

"Just behave. After you apologize, I'll take you back to pick up Daisy. We can still go through with tomorrow's wedding photoshoot."

"Daisy isn't coming back."

"Here you go again." His tone carried a tired, helpless indulgence, as if dealing with a stubborn child. "I already booked her that specialist appointment. Isn't that what you care about the most? Kneel down. Admit you were wrong right now, or I'm calling to cancel it this instant."

"Is that the only leverage you have left to threaten me?"

"Because you only listen when it involves her." Theo placed his phone on the table. "Charlotte, don't force my hand."

I looked at his smug, confident face, reached out, and knocked the teacup out of Sophia's hands.

Wine splashed over the tablecloth as the glass shattered onto the floor.

Debra snapped up. "Are you out of your mind?!"

Sophia shrank back, tears instantly streaming down her face. "Charlotte! I've backed down this far. Why won't you let me go?!"

Theo raised his hand and struck my face.

It wasn't a hard blow, but it split open my lip, fresh blood oozing out again. His hand lingered mid-air for a second, almost as if he wanted to touch my bruised cheek.

I took a step back.

Theo's fingertips slowly curled into a fist. "Charlotte, do you really care so little about your own daughter's life? Her medicine, her preschool spot, and her specialists are all in my hands. If you keep throwing tantrums, who suffers in the end?"

I wiped the blood from my chin, reached into my coat pocket, and pulled out the folded paper.

"You don't need to cancel anything," I said, unfolding the document and slamming it right against his face.

"She died last night."

Silence instantly washed over the entire room.

Theo looked down, his eyes locking onto Daisy's name, then the time of death, and finally the official red seal on the cremation certificate.

"This is fake." He flipped the paper back and forth, his breath hitching. "Just to force me to go home, you'd go so far as to forge a document like this?"

"Call Dr. Stevenson."

Theo's fingers trembled as he dialed three times before hitting the right numbers. As soon as the call connected, he slammed it onto speakerphone.

"Dr. Stevenson, is Daisy with you right now?"

Silence lingered on the other end for two agonizing seconds.

"Theo, you absolute scumbag! Where were you last night when your wife was begging you to save her?! The child had already suffocated to death before she even reached the hospital!"

"Charlotte, you're here."Theo leaned against the edge of the bed and sat up, a faint smile actually gracing his face.A nurse was in the middle of replacing his bed pad. "Family members, please step outside and wait a moment.""She's not family," he blurted out before quickly changing his words. "Well, she still is right now."I stood outside the doorway, waiting until the nurse finished taking away the soiled bedding.Theo had no sensation in his lower body. For the rest of his life, he would be completely dependent on a wheelchair and daily nursing care.Sitting right on the bedside table was that patched-up Play-Doh figure."Did Mandy's mom tell you that I could sit up now?""No.""Then did you come to see me?"I placed the divorce agreement in front of him."Sign it."The smile on his face froze completely. "I thought...""You thought what?""That day, you signed the consent form for my emergency surgery.""I was the only person at the scene who could sign it.""An

Their apartment and car in the city have both been listed for sale.][Theo didn't go back, though. He's still in town.]I turned off my phone after reading it and packed Daisy's urn into a waterproof bag.Over the town loudspeakers, emergency evacuation orders echoed repeatedly."Residents in the West Lane, leave first! Don't wait! The hurricane made landfall early!"Theo went door to door, knocking and helping elderly townspeople with mobility issues get onto the emergency transport vehicles first. When he passed by me, he paused."Let me carry the box for you.""No need.""Then stay right behind me.""Focus on yourself."He didn't say another word, but he carefully tucked a spare pediatric inhaler into his emergency bag.Suddenly, Jenna Thomas ran back from the end of the line, her voice frantic. "Mandy is missing! She was on the truck just a second ago! Has anyone seen

"Is this your medical report?"Theo stared at the date, his fingers pressing heavily into the paper."You were at the flea market that day too?""I was.""But after I woke up in the hospital, my mother told me you fell at home...""She lied to you.""This says emergency C-section..." His voice began to falter. "Was Daisy born that night?""Yes."Sophia scrambled forward to snatch the paper. "Theo, medical records can easily be forged. She's just trying to drive a wedge between us!"I brought up the payment receipt on my phone. "The invoice number, timestamp, and admission ID are all here. Look it up yourself."Theo didn't reach for the phone."What really happened back then?""You were cornered by debt collectors outside the warehouse. They came at you with wooden planks, so I threw myself in front of you and took a blow straight to the stomach."After you passed out, I called the ambulance. Sophia had been hiding behind the shutter door the entire time. She only came out

"Charlotte, a hundred thousand dollars. Sign the papers."Sophia tossed a duffel bag onto the table. Several stacks of cash spilled out from the top.Two of her friends stood right behind her, one holding up a phone and recording."Turn the camera off," I said, looking straight at her.The woman holding the phone took a step back nervously. "We're just keeping a record for evidence, so you don't take the money and play dumb later."Sophia pulled off her sunglasses. "Theo canceled my cards and stopped paying my rent, and it's all because you're acting like a tragic victim in front of him!""Then go take it up with him.""He's out of his mind right now. He only listens to you. As long as you sign the divorce papers, I can take him back to the city, and you won't have to see his face every day either."I didn't touch the bag of money. "He was garbage to begin with. If you want him, feel free to pick him up."Sophia's expression darkened. "Don't think that just because Daisy is de

"Charlotte, you're scaling the fish backward! You're tearing the skin right off."My aunt took my hand and turned the knife in the right direction."I'm sorry.""Why are you apologizing to me? Didn't you know how to do this before?""I forgot."In the two weeks since returning to the coastal fishing town, I kept forgetting things. I forgot to turn off the faucet or whether I had already added salt, and I would still reflexively set out a small extra bowl during dinner.Daisy's urn sat inside the wooden cabinet my grandmother left behind, right next to her unused nebulizer mask."Charlotte, there's a man kneeling outside!" The neighbor's little girl ran inside, holding half a piece of rice cake in her hand. "He says his name is Theo."I walked over to the front door.Theo had lost a lot of weight. Stubbled dark hair covered his jawline, and he was clutching a small Play-Doh figure that had been molded back together. The figure's head was crooked, and its broken arms were wrappe

"You're only asking now? What, were you waiting to host her memorial service first?"Dr. Stevenson's voice echoed relentlessly through the speaker."Her mother signed the death certificate all by herself. She took her to be cremated all by herself. And you, the father, didn't even pick up your phone!"The phone slipped right out of Theo's hand, crashing onto the floor."Which Daisy?" he stammered, bending down to pick up the phone. His fingers trembled so violently that he tried and failed several times to get a grip on it. "Could it be someone with the same name? Dr. Stevenson sees dozens of kids every single day. He must have gotten it wrong!"No one answered.Sophia was the first to react. "Theo, Charlotte might have just taken someone else's death certificate... She loves Daisy so much. How could she wait until today to say anything—"Theo shoved her away before she could finish.Sophia stumbled and collapsed right next to the shattered pieces of glass, a sharp shard slic
