Chapter 4

Author: Dyeing
The assistant sighed and turned another page.

This time, her pupils contracted, and her voice began to tremble uncontrollably.

“February 25, 2020. New Year’s Eve. I was raped.”

I had only gone out to buy frozen dinner.

Vera invited me to spend the holiday with her family, but I didn’t want to intrude on their reunion, so I turned her down.

As I walked back, I couldn’t stop wondering what Ethan was doing.

Had he built a snowman with Mia and eaten turkey with her?

Then I remembered he could be in any city by now.

I didn’t even know whether it snowed there or whether they celebrated Christmas

I laughed at myself.

I’d gone so long without my antidepressants that even my mind had become sluggish.

Every home along the street was brightly lit, and children were setting off fireworks outside.

I walked slowly, taking in the sights.

Then everything suddenly went black.

Several men dragged me into an alley with no security cameras.

They pinned me down and tore off my clothes.

That night, the fireworks drowned out my screams.

The horrific ordeal didn’t end until dawn.

I lay on the ground, numb and empty, staring blankly ahead.

One of the men climbed off me and spat in my face.

“That’s what you get for bullying Mia!”

I watched them walk away.

Then I got up, put my clothes back on, and returned to Vera’s house.

I know this entry is disjointed. I can’t even write down what happened in a coherent way.

My hands are shaking so badly that I can barely hold the pen.

I left Vera a note.

My last wish is to be buried in our family plot.

Please lay me to rest beside Mom and Dad.

Ethan doesn’t want me anymore, so I’m going to find them.

I hope Vera won’t be too devastated when she learns that I’m dead.

And I hope that when Ethan sees my body, he’ll finally forgive me and stop demanding an apology.

The assistant’s voice had turned hoarse.

When she finished, the office was so quiet that a pin drop would’ve sounded deafening.

After a long silence, Ethan forced out a laugh.

“I have to give them credit. They put together quite a performance just to squeeze some money out of me.”

He took out his phone and called Vera.

She answered quickly, and Ethan spoke before she could say anything.

“Tell Julie that if she wants money, she can come get it herself.

“All she has to do is apologize, and I’ll let her come home. Tell her to stop sending me these ridiculous diary entries. I’m not going to believe any of it!”

Vera was silent for a moment.

Then she sighed.

“Ethan, I sold my house. I’m moving away.

“Don’t contact me about Julie again.”

I understood Vera’s decision.

She was exhausted.

Over the years, Mia had repeatedly used her connections to make Vera’s life miserable.

Ethan knew all about it. But because he wanted to force me to apologize, he allowed Mia to continue.

Vera had changed jobs more times than I could count, all while paying the funeral home to keep my body.

She had poured every cent she owned into taking care of me.

Countless times, she had stood beside my body and broken down.

“Why did you have to die like this without telling me anything? Did you really think death would set you free?”

But the moment she finished yelling, she would burst into tears and apologize.

“I’m sorry, Julie. None of this was your fault.

“But I’m so tired. I’m really so tired.”

The guilt ate at me.

If I’d known what Vera would endure, I would’ve knelt before Mia five years ago and begged for her forgiveness.

But there was no going back.

After ending the call, Ethan sat motionless for a long time.

His assistant studied his expression before cautiously speaking.

“Mr. Cole, should we look into it?”

“No.”

Ethan rose with a blank expression and headed for the door.

“Since Vera claims Julie is dead, I’ll believe her one more time.

“Her ashes are supposed to be at the funeral home on Riverdale Road. I’ll go take a look myself.”

He gritted his teeth before adding coldly, “If they’re lying to me, neither of them will get away with it.”

Every day, he sat alone in my old bedroom, apologizing and begging for forgiveness.“I’m sorry. I was wrong.”Once, I would’ve given anything to hear those words from him.Now I’d heard them so many times that they meant nothing.Three months later, the court delivered its verdict. The police had found one of the men who raped me. He confessed to everything and was sentenced to twenty years in prison.Mia was convicted of orchestrating my death and sentenced to life. But Ethan still wasn’t satisfied.Without telling anyone, he bought a dagger and broke into the facility where Mia was being held. Before she could react, he plunged the blade into her heart.Floating nearby, I covered my mouth in shock.Mia’s face turned deathly pale. She grabbed his hand in disbelief.“You’ve lost your mind! You’re killing someone for Julie?“I’ve already been sentenced to life in prison. Is this really worth it?”Ethan watched coldly as sweat poured down her face. Then he pushed the dagge

Ethan slapped Mia across the face so hard that blood immediately appeared at the corner of her mouth.“Julie is my only real sister!“Tell me where you put her ashes!”Faced with the murderous fury in his eyes, Mia sobbed uncontrollably.“I threw them away! I smashed the urn! It’s beneath the balcony, but the wind has probably scattered everything by now!”A vein throbbed violently in Ethan’s forehead. He rushed downstairs and found the shattered urn beneath the balcony. It was made from cheap ceramic. Vera had bought it for ten dollars. She had believed that once Ethan learned I was dead, he would take responsibility for my funeral arrangements. She never expected him to refuse to believe her.Ethan stared at the ceramic shards scattered across the ground, shaking his head in disbelief. His eyes turned red.Only a few fragments of bone remained. He dropped to his knees and gathered them into his hands, clutching them tightly. The sharp fragments pierced his palms, drawin

Without saying a word, Ethan punched him in the face. The employee staggered back in shock.“What the hell is wrong with you?”Ethan’s face darkened as his anger mounted. He grabbed the man by the collar and demanded coldly, “Where are Julie Cole’s ashes? Don’t tell me you don’t have them.“If you lie to me again, I’ll sue this funeral home.”Panic flashed through the employee’s eyes.“I don’t know! Who is Julie Cole? I’ve never heard that name!”“Fine.”Ethan released him and spoke to his assistant without looking back.“Call the police.”“Yes, Mr. Cole.”The assistant pulled out her phone and prepared to make the call. The employee finally panicked. His legs gave out, and he collapsed onto the floor.“Don’t call them! I’ll talk! I’ll tell you everything!”Ethan towered over him, his fists clenched. The man’s voice trembled.“A week ago, a woman named Mia Shaw came here. She said she was Julie Cole’s relative and wanted to collect her ashes.“She paid me a large sum

“You wanted to be buried in the family plot?”Mia sneered.“Not if I have anything to say about it.”She slammed the lid back onto the urn, marched onto the balcony, and hurled it over the railing.Crash! The urn shattered on the ground below, scattering my ashes everywhere.“What was that?”Ethan suddenly appeared in the doorway.Mia spun around in panic.“I dropped a vase. It slipped out of my hands.”He studied her suspiciously.“Are you hurt?”“No. Thank you for worrying about me, Ethan. I thought you were angry about what I said earlier.”He smiled.“Of course not. I know you didn’t mean anything by it.”Mia visibly relaxed. But she failed to notice that although Ethan was smiling, there was no warmth in his eyes. After our parents died, Ethan had built his company from the ground up. He’d spent years dealing with ruthless businessmen and had met every kind of liar imaginable. He was exceptionally good at reading people and catching even the smallest changes in t

Thirty minutes later, Ethan arrived at the funeral home on Riverdale Road. The moment he stepped inside and saw rows of urns, his brow furrowed. His gaze moved rapidly over the names, his expression complicated. If anyone had looked closely, they would’ve seen the fear buried in his eyes.An employee approached him.“Sir, whose remains are you here for?”Ethan’s voice was barely audible.“Julie Cole.”The employee’s expression shifted. He pretended to search through the registry before looking up with a smile.“Sir, we don’t have anyone by that name here.”Ethan’s pupils contracted slightly. The relief that washed over him was unmistakable. But the next second, his hands clenched into fists.“Julie, I knew you were lying to me!”I smiled bitterly as I floated nearby.Ethan, Mia came here and took my ashes before you arrived. You always thought she was better than me, that she was the sweet and obedient sister you deserved. But did you ever consider that she might be a
