[Finally. It's over.]

I heard Theodore's voice again.

But the expression on his face didn't change at all.

I slipped my arm through his and asked him,

"Honey, can we go take a look at that other store, please?"

He hesitated visibly.

"We've been out so long today. You must be tired. Let's head home so you can rest."

Then I heard his thoughts again.

[I'm so sick of this. She shops for clothes all day. Does it ever end?]

Something clenched hard around my heart.

"Okay, let's go home."

This was my fifth year married to Theodore.

Five years ago, when he proposed, he promised to give me the best of everything.

Back then, I thought I was the happiest girl alive.

But after the wedding, he grew colder and colder toward me.

At first, I thought he was exhausted from work and had little energy left for me.

So I played the good little wife, coming up with endless ways to keep his spirits up.

Then today, I suddenly heard his thoughts.

So this was how he really felt.

That evening while making dinner, I accidentally cut my finger.

I sucked in a sharp breath, gripping my bleeding finger, and asked Theodore where the Band-Aids were.

Theodore didn't even look up.

"Is it bad, sweetheart? If it's serious, I'll have someone take you to the ER. How could you be so careless? You're going to make me worry."

As one of the housekeepers put a Band-Aid on my finger, I heard his thoughts again.

[I told her to leave the cooking to the household staff, but she never listens. All she does is cause trouble for me.]

I lowered my eyes, fighting back the tears the pain had brought.

Once the cut was bandaged, I called him to dinner.

"Sweetheart, I made your favorite vegetable soup..."

Theodore closed his laptop and stood up.

"Sorry, sweetheart, something came up at the company. I have to head over right now. Eat without me."

He pulled on his coat and walked out.

I sat at the empty dining table, staring at the meal I had spent more than two hours preparing.

It wasn't even the first time.

Whenever he didn't come home, I would sit there and finish the entire meal alone.

But today, I had no appetite at all.

I even felt a little sick.

Theodore didn't come home for two days straight.

Whenever I texted him, he would only say he was busy and didn't have time.

The old me would have waited at home like a fool.

But ever since I started hearing people's thoughts, I hadn't been able to find a moment's peace.

Even the household staff occasionally grumbled in their heads.

[Poor Mrs. Sterling. She has no idea her husband stays away because he doesn't want to see her.]

Right. How had I never seen it before?

Theodore's coldness toward me wasn't because he was too busy or too tired.

He was simply sick of me.

He was going out of his way to avoid me.

Still, I kept remembering the happy days before our wedding.

I remembered how he came through pouring rain to pick me up after work, and how he secretly planned a surprise for my birthday.

I remembered his promise to give me the best of everything.

Each memory kept a faint hope alive inside me.

So that day, I packed him lunch and took it to his office.

The receptionist took me upstairs, told me Mr. Sterling was in his office, and asked me to wait.

But one moment turned into an hour.

Worried the food would go completely cold, I worked up the nerve to walk to his office door.

I was about to knock when I heard a woman's voice inside.

"Theodore, have you made up your mind? When exactly are you going to divorce that woman?"

After that day, I poured all my energy into the new book.I left the divorce entirely in my lawyer's hands.Theodore dragged it out for two full weeks before signing. My lawyer told me he came up with excuse after excuse to stall. All the while, he kept trying to reach me.Texts, calls, even showing up outside my building. He thought there was still a way back for us. He thought I still loved him.But I was done giving him chances. In the end, Theodore signed. He only did it because Grace accidentally exposed their affair to the press. The press ran wild with the story, and his company's stock slid steadily downward.I released a statement of my own, and my readers rallied behind me.Under the weight of public opinion, he had no choice but to sign.It was the only thing Grace ever did that worked in my favor.Of course, she wasn't trying to help me.She just believed that once Theodore was divorced, he would marry her.But she forgot that the way a man treats his ex is exactly how he'l

Theodore's face turned ashen. His lips moved a few times, but in the end, no words came out.[See me in court? Is this really Nina? How can she even say that?][No... she is Nina. I just ignored her all along. I never even knew what kind of person she really was...]His thoughts were a tangled mess, and I didn't care to listen anymore.I strode toward the exit, where Aiden was waiting for me."Midnight!"He waved eagerly. The breeze lifted the loose strands of hair across his forehead, and he looked ready to bounce off the ground. There was something magnetic about Aiden. Every time I saw him, my mood lifted all on its own.The weight I had been carrying seemed to scatter on the wind.I quickened my steps toward him."Have you been waiting long?""No, no!"Aiden waved it off quickly, the tips of his ears turning red again."I haven't been waiting long. The car's right up ahead. I'll take you."Outside, the evening wind swept past, and I hunched my shoulders without thinking.Aiden star

Theodore didn't take them.He stared down at the papers, panic clouding his eyes in a way I had never seen before."Nina, calm down. Can't we talk this through?"[She loved me so much. She'd never actually walk away.][She's just angry. A little sweet talk and she'll come around.]Even now, he still thought I was just angry. He blamed every problem on my emotions and dismissed me as difficult and immature. The truth was, he had never once treated me as an equal."Talk about what?"Theodore's throat bobbed. He reached for my hand on instinct, and I stepped aside. His hand stayed suspended in midair for a moment before he pulled it back awkwardly."Nina... I know I've been neglecting you lately. That's on me.""But we've been married five years. You can't ask for a divorce over something this small..."His voice was thick with urgency. It suddenly reminded me of how I used to plead with him just as desperately whenever he brushed me aside.Back then, though, he couldn't even be bothered

Aiden and his team shot to their feet in delight as the whole venue erupted in applause. He came up on stage and shook my hand."Thank you! Thank you, Midnight!""I'll stay involved throughout the adaptation. I look forward to working with you."Just then, Theodore shot up from his seat. His chair screeched against the floor."Why?"His voice wasn't loud, but in the silent venue, everyone heard it clearly.Grace tugged at his sleeve in a panic."Have you lost your mind? We're in public!"Theodore shook off her hand, his eyes still fixed on me."Why them? Our company has more resources and more experience. What do they have that we don't?"[She's still angry. She's refusing to choose me on purpose.][She's acting like a child. Doesn't she know a decision this important can't be made on a whim?]I lowered my eyes and looked at him calmly."Mr. Sterling, this is my own work. I have every right to choose the partner I believe is best.""I chose them because they were the only company that

Thunderous applause filled the venue.Only Theodore and Grace sat frozen in place.[What did she say? She's... Midnight?][No. Impossible... That housewife who spends her whole life at the stove? How could she be Midnight?]Grace's thoughts had risen to nearly a scream, and her face drained of color.Apparently, she also knew that everything she had done to me would cost her any chance in this bid.Theodore had gone completely rigid.[Midnight... Nina is Midnight...][The Midnight I've been searching for has been sleeping right next to me?][Why did I never see it? Why? Was she deliberately hiding from me? No... it was me. I never cared about her. I never cared about anything to do with her at all...]His thoughts tumbled out one after another, each one a knife into his own heart.I looked away without sparing them another second."Thank you all for coming today. It's been five years. I've missed you."Another stir ran through the crowd. One young fan burst into tears, her voice catchi

To my surprise, Theodore was waiting in the living room when I got home."Where were you?"[She's been out every day lately and coming home this late. What on earth is she doing?]"I had things to do.""What could have kept you out this late?""None of your business."[None of my business? I really have spoiled her rotten. Look how bold she's gotten.]Theodore sneered and left me one word. "Fine."[The five years I promised are nearly up anyway. Once I land this deal, I'll ask for a divorce.][I hope she'll be this agreeable then, instead of crying and carrying on like she used to.]I took a drink from the fridge and sipped it quietly. He had no idea he was never landing that project. There was no way I would sell them the screen rights to my books. Those emails were only bait to keep them dangling. But the divorce? I'd be happy to oblige. In the days since Grace moved in, she had claimed nearly every inch of my personal space.Every photo of Theodore and me, every gift, every memory,
