Chapter 5

Author: Anonymous
Cyrus' POV

Elena clearly knew exactly what I wanted to say because she spoke before I could get a word out.

"I know you were the one who saved Marissa. So what? Do you expect her to repay you for it?" She raised an eyebrow, her tone dripping with mockery. "What? You actually think you can be with Marissa? Have you looked at yourself lately? Do you really think you're worthy of the Caldwell family's daughter?"

That was when I finally learned the truth.

Elena had been the one keeping me confined to the hospital.

She had dealt with the kidnappers and made sure they could never tell anyone what had really happened. Then she twisted the story, telling everyone that I'd been too afraid to come home after escaping and had hidden away because I was too cowardly to face anyone after abandoning Marissa.

According to the story Elena had fabricated, Damian had found Marissa while he and his friends were out hiking.

The moment Elena learned about his family background, she saw an opportunity. She gave Damian all the credit for rescuing Marissa and deliberately pushed the two of them together, encouraging them to grow closer until they eventually developed feelings for each other.

By the time I learned what had really happened, the truth had already been buried beneath Elena's lies. In everyone's eyes, Damian was the hero who had saved Marissa, while I was nothing more than the coward who had abandoned her.

Then Elena found the one thing she could use to control me.

My sister was still living in our rural hometown, where my ignorant parents had been planning to marry her off to an old man in the village in exchange for money. Elena gave them enough money to abandon the arrangement, but in return, she demanded that I keep the truth to myself.

Thinking of my sister, who had taken care of me ever since I was a child, I had no choice but to agree to Elena's terms.

When I finally walked out of the study, my legs felt so weak that I nearly stumbled down the stairs. Aria caught me before I could fall and gently stroked my head, her eyes filled with sympathy.

"Child, let it go. Mrs. Caldwell will never allow the two of you to be together."

I only nodded, barely registering her words.

In Marissa's eyes, I had already become a despicable man who would do anything to protect my own interests. Whatever feelings we had once shared were gone, and there was no future left for us.

As Marissa and Damian grew closer, the Davenhurst family suddenly went bankrupt, throwing Elena's plans into chaos.

Then she discovered something even more shocking: Damian was the illegitimate son of the Davenhurst family, and his biological mother was the same woman who had eloped with Marissa's father and caused the car accident that killed him.

Elena was consumed by hatred. She vehemently opposed Marissa and Damian's relationship, but Marissa believed Damian was innocent and refused to leave him.

Instead, she began secretly planning for the two of them to move overseas together.

Unfortunately, Elena discovered their plans and was furious. The same woman had already taken her husband from her, and now her daughter was being taken away by that woman's son.

She ordered me to stop them and bring Marissa home.

But on their way to the airport, Marissa and Damian got into a car accident.

Damian injured his hand so badly that he could no longer play the piano. When I pulled Marissa from the wreckage, her head was covered in blood, but the pain in her eyes wasn't what shocked me most.

It was the hatred.

She blamed me for everything that had happened. I'd learned the day before that she and Damian were planning to leave the country, and she assumed I was the one who had told her mother.

In the end, Marissa negotiated with Elena and convinced her to send Damian overseas for treatment. In exchange, she agreed to marry me.

Elena had once looked down on me because of my background, but now she saw me as something far more useful.

She was afraid her daughter would eventually break free from her control, so she chose me because I was easy to manipulate.

She knew Marissa would never fall in love with me again, and that made me the perfect tool to keep her tied to the family.

Elena didn't care whether her daughter was happy. All she cared about was making sure Marissa would never leave her the way her husband had.

After all those years, I'd finally gotten what I'd wanted. I married the woman I'd loved for so long.

But she hated me and had married me for one reason only: revenge.

  • Five Years as My Wife's Lapdog   Chapter 11

Cyrus' POV The next time I heard anything about Marissa was five years after I disappeared. When I first fell into the river, I thought I was as good as dead. But as it turned out, one of the kidnappers was too much of a coward to actually kill anyone. He pulled me out of the water and dumped me on the riverbank before leaving me there. I lay on my back, staring up at the twinkling stars, and decided I didn't want to go back. I didn't want to get tangled up with the Caldwells or any of those people ever again. The Caldwell family's financial support had long since been repaid. After all these years, I'd earned more than enough to consider that debt settled. So, I asked a friend who worked at the hospital to help me arrange a false death certificate for my sister, and then I took her away with me. We settled in a quiet coastal city where the sea breeze blew year-round, the winters were mild, and the summers were cool. I opened an orphanage and began taking in abandoned childre

  • Five Years as My Wife's Lapdog   Chapter 10

Third-person POV Whenever she had to leave for an early business trip, someone would make sure her luggage and everything she needed were packed and ready, with a bowl of warm, nourishing soup waiting for her in the morning. Whenever she was too exhausted from work to cook or even think about food, the man who had spent years perfecting his cooking would quietly prepare a meal just for her.It was only now that Marissa realized how deeply Cyrus had woven himself into her life. His presence had become as constant and unnoticed as the air she breathed. She had taken him for granted for so long that she never realized how much of her life revolved around him until, suddenly, he was no longer there. She desperately searched for any trace of Cyrus, but she couldn't find him anywhere. It was as if he had simply vanished after the kidnapping, leaving no trace behind. The longer she searched, the more she felt like she was losing her mind. Marissa had always hated Cyrus. She hated him

  • Five Years as My Wife's Lapdog   Chapter 9

Cyrus' POVAfter that day, I never saw Marissa again. It was almost as if she were deliberately avoiding me, but I had no time to care about what she was doing. I was already determined to leave. All I wanted was to find a quiet place surrounded by peaceful mountains and clear waters, where I could take good care of my sister and spend the rest of my days in peace. But misfortune wasn't about to let me go that easily. I wanted to leave, yet somehow, I ended up caught in someone else's mess. I had never enjoyed any of the privileges that came with being part of the Caldwell family, but I was kidnapped simply because I was Marissa's husband.Marissa had always been ruthless in business, and over the years, she'd made plenty of enemies. I'd warned her before not to push people too far. When you backed someone into a corner, they were bound to come after you eventually. She had only pointed a finger in my face and snapped, "Who do you think you are? You think you have the right to

  • Five Years as My Wife's Lapdog   Chapter 8

Cyrus' POV On the day Marissa threw a birthday party for Damian, she spared no expense. She set off fireworks across the entire city and even hired more than 100 drones to put on a spectacular birthday display in his honor. I stood beneath the stage, watching my wife laugh and celebrate with another man, her arm wrapped around him as though he were the only person in the world who mattered. All around me, people stared, their eyes filled with curiosity and judgment. With every passing second, it felt like their gazes were slowly swallowing me alive.I simply smiled and said nothing. Then, without warning, the photos of Marissa and Damian smiling together on the giant screen behind the stage suddenly changed. Their happy memories disappeared, replaced by photos of Damian living it up overseas—drinking with blonde women in his arms, frequenting casinos, and even intimate photos of him in bed, completely unrestrained. The atmosphere at the party instantly changed. Most of the g

  • Five Years as My Wife's Lapdog   Chapter 7

Cyrus' POV In the end, my plan fell through. Marissa spent even more money than before, bribing the younger members of the so-called "holdout households" until they finally agreed to move out. Once the last residents were gone, the old buildings, steeped in history and memories, were reduced to rubble beneath the demolition equipment. The board was quickly won over by the entertainment complex's projected profits, and Damian took all the credit. He even smugly sent me a text. "Cyrus, you're seriously useless. I've been gone all this time, and you still haven't managed to win Marissa over. Whatever I want, she practically hands it to me without hesitation. You're nothing but a piece of shit."I stared at the message for a moment before wearily rubbing my temples. I knew Damian hated me. When Marissa first started getting close to him, I investigated his background. What I found wasn't pretty. He spent most of his time hanging around bars and nightclubs, and he'd gotten more

  • Five Years as My Wife's Lapdog   Chapter 6

Cyrus' POV I came down with a fever of 107.6°F and spent an entire day in the hospital fighting for my life. The doctor chewed me out for neglecting my health and pushing myself far beyond my limits. I lay in bed, staring blankly at the ceiling. When the doctor asked where my family was, I simply shook my head. What was I supposed to say? My wife was halfway across the world, traveling with another man. Marissa knew that bringing Damian to her birthday dinner had infuriated her mother, so she had taken him overseas to stay out of Elena's reach for a while. Every now and then, I'd come across Damian's posts on social media, each one showing them enjoying another new destination together. "We're scuba diving in Belloria's crystal-clear waters." "Hit the slopes in Valoria today. Ms. Caldwell really knows how to spoil me.""Watching the Northern Lights in Eirwyn tonight!"The posts were flooded with comments from people cheering them on. "Another day of crying over this per
