Chapter 4

Author: Anonymous
Cyrus' POV

My fingers were bleeding from prying loose stones from the wall. I'd torn my nails and split them down to the quick, but the pain and blood didn't matter. I kept moving, carrying Marissa on my back and forcing myself forward, determined to get her out of there alive.

But I hadn't eaten in so long that my body was already dangerously weak. Black spots danced across my vision, and with every step, my legs felt less steady. I stumbled through the forest until I finally found a hollow inside a large tree. Carefully, I lowered Marissa into it and made sure she was hidden from sight.

She was pale and barely conscious. Desperate to keep her alive, I picked up a sharp stone from the ground and sliced open my wrist. Then I pressed it to her lips and let her drink my blood.

The blood loss made my head spin even more. I shook my head, forcing myself to stay conscious, and used the last of my strength to make my way back toward the path we'd escaped along.

The kidnappers hadn't gotten what they wanted, so there was no way they would simply let us go. With both of us in such weak condition, Marissa and I would never make it out of the forest together. It was only a matter of time before they caught up with us.

The only way I could keep her safe was to draw them away from her.

I knew there was a hunter's trap near the tree hollow, and I was certain someone would find Marissa by the next day. As long as I could lead the kidnappers in the opposite direction, she'd have a chance to survive.

Once I was sure she was hidden and safe, I turned and headed back toward the path.

That was my last thought before everything went black.

Just as I'd expected, the kidnappers found me and dragged me back. They blamed me for ruining their plans by helping Marissa escape, and the man whose head I'd smashed was especially vicious. He glared at me with pure hatred, clearly determined to make me pay.

They hung me up and whipped me with a saltwater-soaked whip, demanding to know where Marissa was. I clenched my teeth and refused to tell them.

That only enraged them further.

What followed was a brutal beating unlike anything I'd ever endured. They cut into my skin with blades, then poured saltwater and pepper water over the wounds. They drove needles beneath my fingernails and subjected me to every form of cruelty they could think of.

They took out all their anger and frustration on me, watching with sick satisfaction as my body convulsed from the pain.

For seven straight days, I was subjected to torture that felt like it would never end. By the time I was finally rescued, I could barely recognize myself.

The moment I saw the people who had come to rescue me, the first thing I asked was, "How is Marissa?"

No one answered.

I was taken to a private hospital for treatment, and I kept asking the same question over and over, but no one would tell me anything. They wouldn't even let me leave the hospital.

For three long months, I was kept there, completely cut off from Marissa and the outside world.

Then, one day, a car from the Caldwell family finally arrived to take me home. I thought I would finally get some answers, but the moment I stepped out of the car, I was met with Marissa's cold, disgusted stare.

Instead of asking if I was okay, she accused me of being selfish. She said that when we were in danger, I'd abandoned her and escaped on my own. She told me she hated me and never wanted to see me again.

According to her, the only reason she was still alive was that someone else had rescued her.

Then, just as I was trying to process her words, I saw her expression soften.

But she wasn't looking at me.

There was another boy standing beside her. His name was Damian.

From that day on, the two of them were almost always together, looking every bit like the perfect couple. And I became nothing more than the person Marissa believed had abandoned her when she needed me most.

I desperately wanted to explain what had really happened to Marissa, but Aria Whitmore, Elena's longtime assistant, stopped me before I could say a word.

There was a trace of pity in her kind eyes as she led me to the study, where Elena was waiting. She explained that Damian was the only son of the Davenhurst family and that, compared to a poor nobody like me, his family was in an entirely different league.

Then she told me to stay away from Marissa and stop deluding myself into thinking I could ever marry the daughter of the Caldwell family.

My mind went completely blank.

I opened my mouth, desperate to explain that I hadn't abandoned Marissa. I hadn't selfishly run away and left her behind.

But before I could get the words out, I realized no one cared about the truth.

  • Five Years as My Wife's Lapdog   Chapter 11

Cyrus' POV The next time I heard anything about Marissa was five years after I disappeared. When I first fell into the river, I thought I was as good as dead. But as it turned out, one of the kidnappers was too much of a coward to actually kill anyone. He pulled me out of the water and dumped me on the riverbank before leaving me there. I lay on my back, staring up at the twinkling stars, and decided I didn't want to go back. I didn't want to get tangled up with the Caldwells or any of those people ever again. The Caldwell family's financial support had long since been repaid. After all these years, I'd earned more than enough to consider that debt settled. So, I asked a friend who worked at the hospital to help me arrange a false death certificate for my sister, and then I took her away with me. We settled in a quiet coastal city where the sea breeze blew year-round, the winters were mild, and the summers were cool. I opened an orphanage and began taking in abandoned childre

  • Five Years as My Wife's Lapdog   Chapter 10

Third-person POV Whenever she had to leave for an early business trip, someone would make sure her luggage and everything she needed were packed and ready, with a bowl of warm, nourishing soup waiting for her in the morning. Whenever she was too exhausted from work to cook or even think about food, the man who had spent years perfecting his cooking would quietly prepare a meal just for her.It was only now that Marissa realized how deeply Cyrus had woven himself into her life. His presence had become as constant and unnoticed as the air she breathed. She had taken him for granted for so long that she never realized how much of her life revolved around him until, suddenly, he was no longer there. She desperately searched for any trace of Cyrus, but she couldn't find him anywhere. It was as if he had simply vanished after the kidnapping, leaving no trace behind. The longer she searched, the more she felt like she was losing her mind. Marissa had always hated Cyrus. She hated him

  • Five Years as My Wife's Lapdog   Chapter 9

Cyrus' POVAfter that day, I never saw Marissa again. It was almost as if she were deliberately avoiding me, but I had no time to care about what she was doing. I was already determined to leave. All I wanted was to find a quiet place surrounded by peaceful mountains and clear waters, where I could take good care of my sister and spend the rest of my days in peace. But misfortune wasn't about to let me go that easily. I wanted to leave, yet somehow, I ended up caught in someone else's mess. I had never enjoyed any of the privileges that came with being part of the Caldwell family, but I was kidnapped simply because I was Marissa's husband.Marissa had always been ruthless in business, and over the years, she'd made plenty of enemies. I'd warned her before not to push people too far. When you backed someone into a corner, they were bound to come after you eventually. She had only pointed a finger in my face and snapped, "Who do you think you are? You think you have the right to

  • Five Years as My Wife's Lapdog   Chapter 8

Cyrus' POV On the day Marissa threw a birthday party for Damian, she spared no expense. She set off fireworks across the entire city and even hired more than 100 drones to put on a spectacular birthday display in his honor. I stood beneath the stage, watching my wife laugh and celebrate with another man, her arm wrapped around him as though he were the only person in the world who mattered. All around me, people stared, their eyes filled with curiosity and judgment. With every passing second, it felt like their gazes were slowly swallowing me alive.I simply smiled and said nothing. Then, without warning, the photos of Marissa and Damian smiling together on the giant screen behind the stage suddenly changed. Their happy memories disappeared, replaced by photos of Damian living it up overseas—drinking with blonde women in his arms, frequenting casinos, and even intimate photos of him in bed, completely unrestrained. The atmosphere at the party instantly changed. Most of the g

  • Five Years as My Wife's Lapdog   Chapter 7

Cyrus' POV In the end, my plan fell through. Marissa spent even more money than before, bribing the younger members of the so-called "holdout households" until they finally agreed to move out. Once the last residents were gone, the old buildings, steeped in history and memories, were reduced to rubble beneath the demolition equipment. The board was quickly won over by the entertainment complex's projected profits, and Damian took all the credit. He even smugly sent me a text. "Cyrus, you're seriously useless. I've been gone all this time, and you still haven't managed to win Marissa over. Whatever I want, she practically hands it to me without hesitation. You're nothing but a piece of shit."I stared at the message for a moment before wearily rubbing my temples. I knew Damian hated me. When Marissa first started getting close to him, I investigated his background. What I found wasn't pretty. He spent most of his time hanging around bars and nightclubs, and he'd gotten more

  • Five Years as My Wife's Lapdog   Chapter 6

Cyrus' POV I came down with a fever of 107.6°F and spent an entire day in the hospital fighting for my life. The doctor chewed me out for neglecting my health and pushing myself far beyond my limits. I lay in bed, staring blankly at the ceiling. When the doctor asked where my family was, I simply shook my head. What was I supposed to say? My wife was halfway across the world, traveling with another man. Marissa knew that bringing Damian to her birthday dinner had infuriated her mother, so she had taken him overseas to stay out of Elena's reach for a while. Every now and then, I'd come across Damian's posts on social media, each one showing them enjoying another new destination together. "We're scuba diving in Belloria's crystal-clear waters." "Hit the slopes in Valoria today. Ms. Caldwell really knows how to spoil me.""Watching the Northern Lights in Eirwyn tonight!"The posts were flooded with comments from people cheering them on. "Another day of crying over this per
