Chapter 4

Author: Seven of Diamonds
Ethan instinctively caught me, checking to see whether I was injured.

The next second, Mandy ran over, tears streaming down her face.

“Faye, Ethan and I were kind enough to pay for you to try on wedding dresses. How could you go so far as to seduce him?”

Ethan’s eyes instantly turned to disgust, and he shoved me away. He pulled out a handkerchief, wiped the spots where he had touched me, and looked at me with disappointment.

“It’s been five years, Faye… How did you get like this? You used to be nice. You were never like this.”

The contemptuous looks from everyone around us cut through me like knives. I had never been so humiliated in my life, and I was too stunned to speak. All I could do was instinctively clutch the gown to cover my body.

Ethan tossed the handkerchief beside me, took Mandy’s hand, and was about to leave. Yet, right at that moment, Riley grabbed onto his coat. She raised her head, stubbornly holding back her tears.

“My mommy didn’t do it! Someone stepped on mommy’s train! Mommy didn’t do it on purpose! Mister, I swear!”

Ethan’s eyes widened in shock. He instinctively grabbed Riley’s arm, his voice trembling. “What… what did you just call me?”

Riley sobbed softly, but she spoke, loud and clear, “Mister.”

I struggled to my feet and shielded my daughter behind me. “Sweetheart, you got it wrong. You shouldn’t call him that. He’s your Aunt Mandy’s husband, so you should call him Uncle Ethan.”

Ethan’s face turned pale in an instant, and he hastily dragged Mandy away.

After paying for the damaged wedding dress, I took Riley home. There, I began packing up my things.

From the deepest corner under the bed, I dug out a time capsule—something Ethan and I had bought together when we had just started college. We agreed to write a letter inside whenever there was something worth remembering and to open it together when we turned eighty. However, ever since we got divorced five years ago, I hadn’t written in it again.

I gently unfolded a letter. It was Ethan’s earliest memory.

“Faye, you smiled at me today. You’re so cute. However, your sister is so annoying; she’s always picking on you. I will protect you from now on.”

As I got to the middle of the pile, my eyebrows gradually furrowed.

“I’m realizing that Faye’s sister doesn’t have it easy either. I’ll help Faye make amends.”

“Mandy cried today. My heart really aches for her.”

Eventually, the tone of his letters began to change.

“If only I had met Mandy earlier. But I can’t let Faye down either. What on earth should I do…”

“Faye already has so much. That is why I’ve decided to choose Mandy.”

Towards the top of the pile, the letters were filled with his affection and admiration for Mandy. Not a single word mentioned my name anymore.

A chill ran down my spine. It turned out that the relationship I had held onto so dearly had been riddled with holes for a long time.

The wedding the next day was grand. Holding up my gown, I was about to walk down the aisle with Mandy when my parents stopped me.

They lowered their voices and said, “Faye, today is actually just Mandy’s wedding alone. What we said before was just to teach you a lesson. Actually, the Clark family knows nothing about this. When the time comes, you’ll just go out as the bridesmaid.”

I smiled and nodded, lifting my skirt as I walked down the aisle.

When the ceremony was about to start, however, the doors opened again, and my parents’ cheers became stuck in their throats. Seth stood at the door in a tailored suit, holding a flower bouquet and looking at me with a smile.

Ethan’s eyes widened in shock. “Isn’t he uninvited? How could…”

My lips curled into a smile. It was true; they hadn’t invited him, but I did.

It was the investigation report from a private detective. Every rumor attacking me lately had been orchestrated by Mandy.Dad’s hands couldn’t stop shaking, and tears streamed down Mom’s face. Despite that, I stood up and walked upstairs in silence. However, the moment I pushed open Mandy’s bedroom door, I froze. I had prepared myself mentally. Given her personality, I expected her to hurl vile curses, scream insults, and threaten me with even more malicious schemes the moment she saw me. Instead, I was met with a woman sitting on her bed, her hair a mess.Hearing the noise at the door, she raised her head and glanced at me. Her eyes held no hatred or fury—only confusion and helplessness. A moment later, as if seeing nothing at all, she lowered her head again.Mom’s eyes were bloodshot. Choking back her sobs, she barely managed to say, “Ever since the wedding, she has been mentally unstable. Just a few days ago, she discovered that Ethan had been going out to see you, and she brok

Whenever I went to Seth’s company, I would often hear people whispering behind my back. Even when I returned to my family home, the neighbors quickly disappeared the moment they saw me.Finally, while standing near a stairwell, I overheard a conversation.“Don’t be fooled by Faye’s saintly act. She’s no victim. I heard Ethan was in love with Mandy first. It was Faye who threw a temper tantrum and used every dirty trick in the book to tear them apart.“In the end, though, her dirty tricks couldn’t triumph over true love. They still ended up together. They only left the country because they were terrified of what crazy thing she might do next. Now that she knows she doesn’t stand a chance, she’s using Seth Clark as a rebound.“I thought she was innocent, but as it turns out, she’s just a master manipulator.”The moment I pushed the door open, the people in the hallway scattered, their faces pale. Silence swallowed the corridor again as the motion-sensor light flickered off and on.

Painful sobs echoed from behind me, but I closed my eyes, refusing to stop. After walking a few paces, a car beside me suddenly honked. When I turned my head, I saw Seth leaning against his car with a bright smile on his face. Instantly, my heart warmed. I smiled and got into the car with him.The moment I opened the door, I noticed a gift box on the passenger seat. Seth raised his eyebrows and said, “Don’t be sad anymore. Take a look at this.”I shook my head gently. “I’m not sad.”I was just overwhelmed with emotion.I used to hate Mandy and Ethan. I hated the love that had secretly blossomed between them, and I hated the way they had begged me. Yet, I never expected that after five long years, a love fought for with such hardship would turn sour.In the rearview mirror, a disheveled woman suddenly charged up to Ethan and pounded him with her fists over and over. Even through the car window, her furious interrogation echoed loudly.“You told me you were coming out to sign a c

The next day, the day after that, and for an entire month, I would see Ethan’s stooped figure standing downstairs every morning. Occasionally, as I passed by, I could even hear his painful sobs.“I’m sorry, Faye. I’m sorry, Riley. I was wrong.”I gently covered Riley’s eyes and quickened my pace, leading her away.Eventually, unable to bear the endless disturbance, I contacted security and told them to keep Ethan outside the gate. I thought he would give up after that, but instead he moved to the main entrance of the neighborhood and stood there.People came and went, staring at him with all sorts of looks. However, he didn’t seem to care as he stood in the same spot, staring fixedly in the direction we had left. The security manager approached me with an embarrassed look. “Ms. Green, him standing there isn’t illegal, and he refuses to be driven away. We can’t be too forceful with him either. But it’s really hurting the neighborhood’s image. Could you perhaps resolve this privatel

The room instantly erupted into chaos.“Did you hear? Five years ago, Faye and Ethan were actually a couple. Then they got divorced for some reason, and Ethan went abroad with Faye’s older sister, Mandy.”“No wonder. It turns out he hooked up with his wife’s sister.”Hearing blatant whispers all around him, Ethan’s face turned pale with embarrassment and rage. He let go of the hem of my dress limply. I didn’t spare him another glance. Holding onto Seth’s arm and leading Riley by the hand, I stepped into the elevator. The elevator doors slowly closed, shutting out the clamor outside. Yet, as soon as we pushed open the doors to the grand ballroom upstairs, deafening cheers and the pop of party poppers instantly enveloped us.The grand scale of the venue far exceeded my imagination. Fresh flowers blanketed the red carpet, while crystal chandeliers lit up the ballroom. Even when Ethan and I got married, it hadn’t come anywhere close to this level of extravagance.Seth seemed to cat

Seth’s smile was bright as he jogged over to greet me. The moment my hand touched his, a sudden force grabbed me from behind and yanked me back.Ethan looked deathly pale as he asked, “Faye, where do you think you’re going?”A hush fell over the surroundings. Everyone exchanged bewildered glances, unable to make sense of what he was doing. My voice remained perfectly calm. “It’s my wedding day, so naturally, I’m going to get married. Our venue is upstairs, so we’ll be heading out first.”With every word I spoke, Ethan’s grip tightened around my arm, as if he was going to crush my bones into dust.Frowning, I pried his fingers off one by one and added, “What are you doing, Ethan?”At the mention of his name, his face turned white for a split second, and he yanked his hand back as if he’d been burned. He looked toward Riley pleadingly. “Riley, what your mother is saying isn’t real, right? This is just a joke, right? Or is she still upset about what happened before? I can apologize
