Chapter 3

Author: Seven of Diamonds
Looking at the photos scattered all over the floor, I fell silent.

Mandy, on the other hand, casually picked up one of the photos as if she had discovered a priceless treasure and smiled maliciously. “Why not this one?”

It was Seth Clark, the heir to the Clark family. He had cycled through countless girlfriends since he was young and had the worst reputation in our social circle.

I lowered my eyes and nodded. “Fine.”

Ethan stared at me blankly, too stunned to move.

Mandy’s smile grew wider. “Since you’ve agreed, why don’t you marry him on the same day as we are, which is three days from now? We’ll take care of the arrangements for you. It’ll be a double celebration. How about that?”

I let out a faint smile. “Sure.”

Ignoring Ethan’s grim expression, I led Riley back into the room.

Her tiny hand gripped mine tightly. “Mommy, am I going to have a new daddy?”

I held her in silence.

Although Seth’s reputation was terrible, the Clark family had an excellent standing. In particular, his mother, Daisy Clark, was a well-known business titan. With her overseeing things, even if Seth had no feelings for me, I could find a way forward for myself and Riley’s future.

Forcing a smile, I put my hand on Riley’s head. “Do you trust me?”

She nodded, then turned around and threw everything related to Ethan straight into the trash.

The next day, Mandy dragged us out to try on wedding dresses. She tried on one gorgeous gown after another, looking beautiful in all of them. Excited, she skipped over to Ethan, stood on tiptoe, and kissed him.

Ethan froze for a moment and instinctively glanced at me. “That’s enough. There are other people here.”

Mandy snuggled into his arms with a smile and cast me a provocative look. “It’s fine! We’ve always been like this anyway. She’s used to it. Besides, she’s my sister. What’s there to hide? Right, Faye?”

I lowered my eyes and turned away. “That’s right. You both love each other so much. I’m happy for you both.”

In an instant, Ethan’s expression darkened. He pulled Mandy into his arms and kissed her passionately. Entangled in each other’s embrace, their breathing became ragged, and before long, muffled, breathless groans filled the room.

The store clerks quickly looked away, while I sat there, frozen in place. I could only shield Riley’s eyes tightly and cover her ears.

I had no idea how much time had passed before they finally parted, but satisfied at last, Mandy refocused her attention on me.

“Faye, you’re getting married tomorrow too. Aren’t you going to try on any wedding dresses?”

I shook my head.

I used to be the most pampered. Back when I married Ethan, I dragged him through every bridal shop in the city to try on dresses. However, I eventually learned that what matters in a marriage wasn’t the dress—it was the person.

Perhaps seeing how indifferent I was irritated Ethan, and he suddenly lost his temper. With a dark expression, he slapped a black card onto the table. “Try them on! Try every single dress in this shop until you’re satisfied!”

With that, a store clerk ushered me into the fitting room. Dress after dress, I tried them on until I was dizzy with exhaustion.

It wasn’t until I put on the final strapless gown that I frowned and said, “This isn’t my size. Bring me a smaller one.”

The store clerk’s eyes flickered nervously. “I’m sorry, we don’t have your size for this design in the store right now. We’ll cinch the waist a little tighter. Just make do with it, alright?”

I walked out in the wedding dress, holding the skirt up carefully to keep it from slipping off, when I saw Mandy give the store clerk a subtle look. I instantly snapped to alert, but I was still a step too late.

Someone stepped on the hem of my dress behind me. Losing my balance, I tumbled forward toward Ethan, and the already oversized gown tore right open, exposing a massive amount of skin.

My mind instantly went blank.

It was the investigation report from a private detective. Every rumor attacking me lately had been orchestrated by Mandy.Dad’s hands couldn’t stop shaking, and tears streamed down Mom’s face. Despite that, I stood up and walked upstairs in silence. However, the moment I pushed open Mandy’s bedroom door, I froze. I had prepared myself mentally. Given her personality, I expected her to hurl vile curses, scream insults, and threaten me with even more malicious schemes the moment she saw me. Instead, I was met with a woman sitting on her bed, her hair a mess.Hearing the noise at the door, she raised her head and glanced at me. Her eyes held no hatred or fury—only confusion and helplessness. A moment later, as if seeing nothing at all, she lowered her head again.Mom’s eyes were bloodshot. Choking back her sobs, she barely managed to say, “Ever since the wedding, she has been mentally unstable. Just a few days ago, she discovered that Ethan had been going out to see you, and she brok

Whenever I went to Seth’s company, I would often hear people whispering behind my back. Even when I returned to my family home, the neighbors quickly disappeared the moment they saw me.Finally, while standing near a stairwell, I overheard a conversation.“Don’t be fooled by Faye’s saintly act. She’s no victim. I heard Ethan was in love with Mandy first. It was Faye who threw a temper tantrum and used every dirty trick in the book to tear them apart.“In the end, though, her dirty tricks couldn’t triumph over true love. They still ended up together. They only left the country because they were terrified of what crazy thing she might do next. Now that she knows she doesn’t stand a chance, she’s using Seth Clark as a rebound.“I thought she was innocent, but as it turns out, she’s just a master manipulator.”The moment I pushed the door open, the people in the hallway scattered, their faces pale. Silence swallowed the corridor again as the motion-sensor light flickered off and on.

Painful sobs echoed from behind me, but I closed my eyes, refusing to stop. After walking a few paces, a car beside me suddenly honked. When I turned my head, I saw Seth leaning against his car with a bright smile on his face. Instantly, my heart warmed. I smiled and got into the car with him.The moment I opened the door, I noticed a gift box on the passenger seat. Seth raised his eyebrows and said, “Don’t be sad anymore. Take a look at this.”I shook my head gently. “I’m not sad.”I was just overwhelmed with emotion.I used to hate Mandy and Ethan. I hated the love that had secretly blossomed between them, and I hated the way they had begged me. Yet, I never expected that after five long years, a love fought for with such hardship would turn sour.In the rearview mirror, a disheveled woman suddenly charged up to Ethan and pounded him with her fists over and over. Even through the car window, her furious interrogation echoed loudly.“You told me you were coming out to sign a c

The next day, the day after that, and for an entire month, I would see Ethan’s stooped figure standing downstairs every morning. Occasionally, as I passed by, I could even hear his painful sobs.“I’m sorry, Faye. I’m sorry, Riley. I was wrong.”I gently covered Riley’s eyes and quickened my pace, leading her away.Eventually, unable to bear the endless disturbance, I contacted security and told them to keep Ethan outside the gate. I thought he would give up after that, but instead he moved to the main entrance of the neighborhood and stood there.People came and went, staring at him with all sorts of looks. However, he didn’t seem to care as he stood in the same spot, staring fixedly in the direction we had left. The security manager approached me with an embarrassed look. “Ms. Green, him standing there isn’t illegal, and he refuses to be driven away. We can’t be too forceful with him either. But it’s really hurting the neighborhood’s image. Could you perhaps resolve this privatel

The room instantly erupted into chaos.“Did you hear? Five years ago, Faye and Ethan were actually a couple. Then they got divorced for some reason, and Ethan went abroad with Faye’s older sister, Mandy.”“No wonder. It turns out he hooked up with his wife’s sister.”Hearing blatant whispers all around him, Ethan’s face turned pale with embarrassment and rage. He let go of the hem of my dress limply. I didn’t spare him another glance. Holding onto Seth’s arm and leading Riley by the hand, I stepped into the elevator. The elevator doors slowly closed, shutting out the clamor outside. Yet, as soon as we pushed open the doors to the grand ballroom upstairs, deafening cheers and the pop of party poppers instantly enveloped us.The grand scale of the venue far exceeded my imagination. Fresh flowers blanketed the red carpet, while crystal chandeliers lit up the ballroom. Even when Ethan and I got married, it hadn’t come anywhere close to this level of extravagance.Seth seemed to cat

Seth’s smile was bright as he jogged over to greet me. The moment my hand touched his, a sudden force grabbed me from behind and yanked me back.Ethan looked deathly pale as he asked, “Faye, where do you think you’re going?”A hush fell over the surroundings. Everyone exchanged bewildered glances, unable to make sense of what he was doing. My voice remained perfectly calm. “It’s my wedding day, so naturally, I’m going to get married. Our venue is upstairs, so we’ll be heading out first.”With every word I spoke, Ethan’s grip tightened around my arm, as if he was going to crush my bones into dust.Frowning, I pried his fingers off one by one and added, “What are you doing, Ethan?”At the mention of his name, his face turned white for a split second, and he yanked his hand back as if he’d been burned. He looked toward Riley pleadingly. “Riley, what your mother is saying isn’t real, right? This is just a joke, right? Or is she still upset about what happened before? I can apologize
