Chapter 1

In a forest-side restaurant in the Silverglade Pack, I sat quietly in the corner of the main hall, savoring my food.

That’s when Aiden Monroe walked in with Janine Swettenham and a few of his close buddies.

"Isn’t that Wren Hollowfang?" one of them blurted out. "The one who followed Aiden all the way to the Silverglade Pack and stayed by his side for eight whole years?"

Aiden seemed surprised to see me, too. His lips curved up just slightly, but then he quickly forced a blank expression and said flatly, "Yeah, that’s her. I knew she’d come crawling back eventually."

Laughter broke out around the table as they all looked at me.

"Didn’t Wren disappear without a word back then? Now that Aiden’s become the pack’s top warrior, she probably cries herself to sleep every night with regret!"

"Wren, do you even come to places like this often? This is a high-end spot, and judging by your look, you’re usually the kind they stop at the door, right?"

"Don’t tell me that without Aiden, you can’t even afford a decent dress? Look at you. You must really be doing terribly."

I glanced down at what I was wearing. Because of the pregnancy, I wore a loose blouse. My face was bare without a trace of makeup. I did look a little worn out and tired.

However, they had no idea that my mate, Nolan Crane, had personally hired a bespoke tailor to design and sew this comfortable, well-made outfit.

Back when I used to accompany Aiden to meet his friends, I always made sure to dress to impress, for his sake. Even if the fabrics were uncomfortable, I endured it just to look good for him.

I didn’t need to anymore.

One of the girls I used to be close with smiled at me and said, "Wren, now that you’re back, Aiden must be thrilled. He’s been looking for you all these years, asking around everywhere."

Aiden’s smile faltered. He coughed awkwardly but didn’t deny it. Then, just like that, he changed the subject. "Janine’s pup, Rowan, is starting at Moonpup Hollow Preschool. Ours should be about the same age, right? Bring him back tomorrow. The two of them can grow up together."

He was so sure that all these years, even after I’d left, I’d still be raising his child, patiently waiting for his forgiveness and his acceptance.

Alas, I was no longer that love-struck girl who revolved around his world. Seeing him again stirred nothing in me, not even a ripple. If anything, I felt mildly annoyed.

Not wanting to drag this out, I gently dabbed my mouth with a napkin and stood to leave.

That was when Janine, who had been silent this whole time, suddenly spoke up, "You’re really down on your luck, huh? All these years, and you’re still only ordering the cheapest dessert on the menu. Why don’t you come work for us as a maid? I could use someone to play with my son."

She gave me a slow, disdainful once-over, eyes full of contempt. "Be our maid, and I’ll make sure you can finally afford real food here."

Five years had passed, and Janine had only grown more overbearing. Clearly, with Aiden backing her, she’d been living quite well.

I frowned in disgust. Since becoming Luna to the Black Rose Pack, there wasn’t a luxury I hadn’t tasted. Still, the desserts here reminded me of a moment I could never forget.

Back when I was at my lowest, the pastry chef here had once offered me a sweet treat. Even after five years, I still couldn’t forget that flavor. This time, I’d come back for that alone, out of pure nostalgia.

Janine leaned closer to Aiden, deliberately brushing against his arm, a glint of smugness in her eyes.

"Oh, I almost forgot! You used to have a room at our place, but Rowan wanted a study, so I remodeled it. If you come back, the only space left is one of the servant quarters. It's a bit cramped, but that’s okay, right, Wren?"

Aiden chuckled under his breath and shot me a glance. "What’s she got to be upset about? She disappeared over a petty fight. Now that she’s hit rock bottom and come crawling back, a little hardship is exactly what she deserves."

Those words…

My heart skipped a beat. So, to him, secretly getting registered as mates with Janine after an eight-year relationship with me was just a petty matter? Was this how little I mattered in Aiden’s world?

Well then, it was all in the past and was not worth mentioning anymore.

No matter how hard Horace begged, Nolan refused to stay. He lifted me in his arms and walked out without looking back. The carefully prepared land agreement was canceled. Later, I heard that Horace was so furious with himself, he literally coughed up blood.Everyone who had witnessed that night would remember it as a living nightmare for the rest of their lives. Those who had wronged me were all met with terrifying retribution.Every person in that pack hall who had sneered, scoffed, or looked away when I was suffering was punished. Each one had a silver blade pressed deep into their arm, leaving hideous scars that refused to heal. The lingering silver poison made sure they felt pain with every heartbeat, every moment of every day.As for Janine and Aiden, their fates were far worse.Nolan didn’t even need to take action. Horace himself destroyed their wolves with his own hands and banished both from the Silverglade Pack.At first, Horace had wanted to decapitate them and send t

  • Five Years of Silence   Chapter 8

Horace was dying of regret. How could he have been so blind to choose such a reckless fool as his pack’s top warrior? Not only had Aiden offended the Luna of Black Rose Pack, but he’d dared to lead the charge in humiliating her. Now, Horace had learned the worst part of all: Aiden had abandoned her five years ago. That was when Horace realized that his entire pack might be finished. All he could do now was sever ties with the idiot as fast as possible and pray that Alpha Nolan would be magnanimous enough not to punish them all for one man’s sins.Alas, Aiden was too far gone. Jealousy had rotted away whatever reason he had left. The only thing looping in his mind was the obsession to drag me back.He ignored the pressure from two Alphas bearing down on him and shouted at the top of his lungs, "I’m telling the truth! Wren left me five years ago, and she was already pregnant! That pup over there? He’s mine! The timeline fits perfectly! What, do you all think I’m blind?"His voice ro

Nolan didn’t say a word. His first move was to call for the doctors.A medical team rushed in and immediately performed a full examination.Even Horace Greystone, Alpha of Silverglade Pack, squeezed into the room. When he heard I was pregnant, his face went completely ashen."Don’t worry," the doctor finally said, wiping sweat from his brow. "The mother and baby are both stable. She’s just suffering from shock and silver poisoning. Once we cleanse the toxin and treat the wound, there’ll be no harm to either of them."Only then did the doctor carefully begin dressing my arm.Seeing that I was alright, Nolan’s expression finally softened, just slightly. He rose to his feet, scanning every face in the room. Then, slowly, deliberately, he asked, "She just said my mate once begged someone for affection. Tell me, who was that supposed to be?"Every pair of eyes shifted instinctively toward Aiden. The weight of Nolan’s presence was crushing, and Aiden felt it like a mountain on his ch

The entire pack hall fell instantly silent. The doors burst open with a bang, and Nolan stormed in, the full weight of the Silverglade Pack’s leadership trailing nervously behind him.The moment he threw me a heartbeat's glance, Janine, who was still holding the knife aloft, was flung violently across the hall by an invisible force. She smashed through three support pillars and landed embedded deep in the far wall.Despite being Silverglade’s top warrior, Aiden had already collapsed into a trembling heap on the floor. Faelan, who was finally free, leapt up and ran to Nolan, sobbing as he threw himself into his father’s arms."Daddy! They were bullying Mommy and me! You have to make them pay!"Nolan wrapped his arms protectively around our son, then crouched slowly in front of me. His voice was calm—too calm—the quiet before a coming storm."How many fools," he said, inspecting my wounds, "thought they could lay hands on you?"My throat tightened as I looked up at him. The cold m

"She snuck in? Gods, this is the joint feast for the territory merger, and someone’s trying to cause trouble?""Who brought her? Get her out of here!"More and more people gathered around, and Faelan hid deeper in my arms in terror."Mommy, I’m scared… they’re so mean. Especially that lady, she looks like she wants to eat me!" He pointed a trembling finger at Janine, then quickly retracted it.A staff member walked up and pointed at me, asking Aiden, "Mr. Monroe, is this your guest?"Aiden’s face tensed when I refused to even look at him. He gave a cold little smirk and told the staffer, "No. I don’t know her."Janine’s smugness grew. She lifted her chin high and said to the server, "Throw her out before she disturbs our honored guests."I stared straight at her, and then, suddenly, I laughed. "You sure you want to throw me out?"Janine flinched under the force of my voice but only for a second. Her face twisted with rage, and she shoved me hard. "Stop pretending. Who do you th

Back home, I’d planned to scold Faelan properly, but the moment he looked up and pouted at me, all my anger melted."No more ditching the bodyguards, okay? Your safety comes first. Your dad is busy with the Silverglade Pack’s Alpha these next few days, so he won’t be back until the treaty’s signed. Don’t make Mommy worry, alright?"Faelan nodded sweetly, then snuck in another plea while snuggling up to me. "Then, wherever Mommy goes, bring me too, okay? I promise I’ll be super good!"My heart turned to mush. I scooped him up and kissed him twice, hard."Okay. Mommy promises—you’ll go wherever I go."—Three days later, the Alpha of Silverglade Pack, Horace Greystone, threw our family a grand welcome feast.Silverglade was a small, subordinate pack to Black Rose. Horace had spent heavily, offering us rare pelts and riches, to trade for even a modest piece of land from Black Rose. This land merger meant everything to them. They even stationed a formal welcoming party outside the p
