Chapter 3

Author: Elin
I had been free for less than a day when my mother collapsed.

Elara Nightshade had always been strong. Even as the wolfen degeneration weakened her bones, she never complained. But that night, her heart gave out.

The pack healers worked fast. Their faces told me everything.

"The degeneration has reached her heart. Without Moonflower Essence, she won't survive the night."

Moonflower Essence. The rarest of remedies. Only an Alpha could authorize its use. Only Alistair Blackthorn had access to the Silvermoon Pack's reserve.

I called him. Once. Twice. Ten times.

No answer.

I ran to the pack house. To his study.

The door was open.

Alistair knelt on the floor, cradling a wolf pup in his arms. The small creature convulsed, foam at its mouth.

Jade Moonshadow sat beside him, tears streaming down her face.

"Alistair, please. Moonflower Essence is the only thing that can save her. She's been with me for five years. I can't lose her."

I grabbed his arm. My voice broke.

"Alistair. My mother is dying. She has hours. Give me the essence."

Jade looked at me, her eyes wet and pitiful.

"Selene... I'm so sorry. But this pup ate something poisonous. Acute heart failure. The healer said only Moonflower Essence can reverse it. Please... she's all I have."

Alistair looked at the pup. Looked at me.

His jaw worked. His eyes begged for an answer I could not give.

I dropped to my knees. For the first time in my life, I knelt before him.

"Alistair. I am begging you. That woman raised me alone for twenty years. She is my only family. Please."

He closed his eyes. When he opened them, they were hollow.

"Selene... I'm sorry. Your mother's degeneration was terminal. The essence would only buy her a few more days of pain."

He paused. The next words came out like broken glass.

"I owe Jade too much. She cannot lose this pup."

He took the precious vial from his belt. He injected it into the pup.

The small wolf stopped shaking. Its eyes opened.

Jade sobbed with relief.

I do not remember leaving. I only remember waking on the cold floor of the healer's den, someone pressing a small wooden box into my hands.

"Selene... we did everything we could. Without the essence..."

The healer's voice faded.

I held the box. My mother's ashes.

I sat in the cemetery for three hours. The rain fell. I did not cry.

Then Jade came.

She walked up the hill with the pup trotting beside her—healthy, alive. Saved by the medicine meant for my mother.

Her face was soft with false sympathy.

"Selene... the dead are gone. The living remain."

She paused. Then she smiled.

"Why don't we let Snowflake have the ashes? She needs the nutrition. The healer said bone meal is excellent for growing pups."

The world stopped.

"What did you say?"

Alistair stepped out from behind a tree. His face was calm. Reasonable.

"Selene. Snowflake just recovered. She needs strength. Think of it as good karma. Your mother believed in such things. If she knew her remains helped a living creature, she would be happy."

I could not breathe.

"You monsters. That is my mother. You will not touch her."

But guards surrounded me. Strong hands pinned my arms.

I watched as Jade tipped the wooden box over. Ashes scattered on the wet ground.

The pup lowered its head. It lapped at the gray dust.

I screamed until my throat bled.

"I will kill you. Both of you. I swear by the Moon."

Alistair's voice was cold. "Snowflake needs quiet to digest. Shut her up."

A guard's fist connected with my face.

Then another.

Darkness took me.

The memorial was small. I did not attend.Instead, I walked to the cemetery where my mother's grave stood empty. I knelt in the grass."It's over," I whispered. "He's gone."The wind answered. The days turned into weeks. My clinic grew. Gideon stayed. One evening, after a long shift, I came home to find him in the kitchen. He had cooked dinner. The table was set for two."Selene. I've waited seven years to ask you this.""Ask."He took my hand. "Will you stop running? Not for me. For yourself."I thought about my mother's words. Don't look back. Keep moving forward."I stopped running a long time ago," I said. "I just didn't realize it.""Then stay.""Here? With you?""Here. With me. Wherever that is."I looked around the small kitchen. The worn table. The kettle that had boiled tea for a hundred late-night conversations."I'd like that."The next morning, I woke before dawn. Gideon was still asleep.I slipped out of bed and walked to the window. The sea was gray and calm. Snow Peak ro

Seven years passed.Alistair was released. He came to my town. He knelt outside my clinic for three days, begging for forgiveness. On the fourth day, I opened my door."What do you want, Alistair?""I want you to forgive me.""You fed my mother's ashes to a pup. You locked me in a cellar. You don't get forgiveness.""I loved you," he whispered."You loved the idea of me. Go home, Alistair. Don't come here again."I walked inside and closed the door.He left that night. A week later, a hiker found his body at the base of Snow Peak. He had jumped. The note in his pocket was short: "Selene. I owe you a life. I'm paying it back."Gideon came up behind me when I read the news. He wrapped his arms around my waist."His choices were his own. You did not push him.""I know. But I keep thinking—if I had said yes, would he still be alive?"He turned me around to face him. "That is not murder. That is survival."That night, Gideon brought me a letter. Alistair had left it with a lawyer.Selene,I

Alistair's world crumbled. His beta turned on him, submitting testimony to the council. Jade Moonshadow was convicted and screamed as the guards dragged her away.Alistair asked to speak to me. "Denied," the council said.I heard about it later from Gideon. "Are you okay?" he asked."I'm fine.""You don't look fine.""I look exactly how I feel. Nothing."The fellowship ended six months later. I graduated at the top of my class.Instead of accepting a position at Dr. Thorne's institute, I took a small apartment in a quiet town near the sea. I opened a clinic—humans during the day, wolves at night.Gideon visited every weekend. He brought coffee. He brought books. He brought a quiet companionship that began to fill the empty spaces. One night, a year after the fellowship ended, we walked along the shore. The moon was full. Gideon walked close enough that our shoulders brushed."Selene. I've been waiting for you to heal. To stop running. To be ready.""I'm not sure I'll ever be completely

Two months passed. The fellowship consumed me. Anatomy labs until midnight. Research papers stacked to my ceiling. Rounds at the human hospital where no one knew I was a wolf. But Alistair had not forgotten me.The first sign came in the form of an email. A junior researcher forwarded me an anonymous document—thirty pages of supposed "evidence" that I had fabricated my research data, plagiarized my fellowship application, and falsified my medical credentials.I knew that handwriting. I had seen it on love letters years ago, on the back of the photograph that ruined my life.I forwarded it to Gideon."He's trying again," I said.Gideon's face hardened. "The council's investigators will tear it apart. But the human board—""I know. If they believe this, I lose the fellowship."Gideon made a call. Within days, the report came back: forged. Metadata traced to a server in the North—the same server used by Alistair's former beta."He's running this from his cell," Gideon said. "That's a viol

The dungeons were not my concern anymore.I packed my bags and left Silvermoon territory without looking back. The human college was three hundred miles south—a sprawling campus hidden in plain sight, where wolves and humans studied side by side under the guise of "international medical research."Dr. Zachary Thorne met me at the gate."Selene Nightshade." He extended a hand. His grip was firm, his eyes sharp. "I read your file. The council's judgment, too. You've been through hell.""I've been through worse. I survived."He smiled—a thin, approving curve. "That's why I wanted you for the fellowship. We don't need perfect students. We need wolves who know how to keep going when everything falls apart."He led me inside. The first week was a blur of orientation, lectures, and labs. I buried myself in work. Anatomy. Pharmacology. Wolfen physiology. Human pathology. The hours were long, the material brutal, and I welcomed every minute of it.Gideon Frost appeared on my second day.He was

The post went viral within hours. Not just on the wolf forum. Somehow, screenshots had leaked to human news sites. The story crossed worlds—an Alpha accused of letting his mate's mother die, of feeding ashes to a dog, of beating his Luna. The council had no choice but to move fast. The next morning, a new announcement appeared on the official pack network:Notice of Suspension: Alpha Alistair Blackthorn of Silvermoon Pack is hereby suspended from all Alpha duties effective immediately. A full investigation into charges of infidelity, abuse of power, misuse of Moonflower Essence, and desecration of remains has been initiated. Alistair Blackthorn is forbidden from leaving pack territory until further notice.Jade Moonshadow received no separate notice. She was nothing to the council. But everyone in the pack knew. Her Gamma ranking had been stripped. Her name removed from every training roster. The healers refused to treat her. The merchants refused to serve her.She had become a ghost.
