“That’s right. The best employee of the year award should have gone to you. Why is Mr. Darwin the one getting it?”

“Why is he even part of the running? That award was always supposed to be for Mr. York.”

Everyone found the situation unfair for me.

I remembered how Matthew had begged me for help at Metal Repairs Shop, which had been my own shop.

“Please help me, Mr. York! It’s not easy running a car repair shop in the city. I’ve only just become the owner, but business isn’t doing good. If business is still bad next month, I’ll be fired. I really need your help.”

“I’ve only just opened this shop in town with my wife, and you’re asking me to go to the city?”

He grabbed my hand. “I’ll give you six thousand dollars as your salary and 30% of any bonus the shop gets. The shop belongs to a major company, so the bonus we get every year is huge. I’ll give you the best treatment!”

Lina Stane, my wife, came out. “William, Matthew is being so sincere. Besides, he worked with you for eight years. Just say yes.”

So, I smiled and helped him up. “Alright, get up. I’ll help you.”

Back then, Matthew had shown me a bank card that had one million dollars in it. That was the bonus, he had bragged to me.

Later on, he took out another document and announced the latest news, “From this month on, I’ll be adjusting your salaries for the development of the shop.

“Your base salary will be tied to your productivity. Your pay grades are tied to your ranking in the shop. Mr. York, from this month onward, your base salary is three thousand dollars.”

“Three thousand? You didn’t give me the bonus I deserve, and you’re cutting my salary in half?!”

He cast me a glance before sneering. “Do you think three thousand is too little? You’re old now. No one else but me will hire you, old man.

“Everyone, listen up. We’re driving up sales. If you can switch the parts of any car coming in for repairs, do it,” Matthew said loudly while looking at the repairmen watching.

“Mr. York, your skills only help the customers save money, and it’s useless now. The fact that you’re even getting three thousand dollars is because you were once my teacher.” Matthew patted my face with the documents and strode into his office.

I had repaired cars for more than twenty years and came to the city to help him after closing my own shop in town.

There were plenty of problems in the shop, and I solved them all. Yet in the end, I had my salary cut in half.

When I needed money the most, Matthew took the bonus that belonged to me. I could not just let it slide!

I called Lina quickly, “Lina, my mom got into an accident. Transfer eighty thousand dollars to me, please?

“You don’t have it?

“What? Wasn’t there more than one hundred thousand dollars in our bank account? Why is it gone?”

“Things are expensive in the city. I’ve spent them all. Could you stop being so annoying? I’m hanging up. I’m busy here.” Lina hurriedly hung up.

As I clenched my phone tightly, I was forced to go to Matthew again.

Right when I reached the door, I heard familiar laughter from the office.

Lina sat on Matthew’s lap while buttoning her blouse. Her face was red. “Why were you so rough just now? What if William finds out?”

Matthew laughed again and pulled Lina into his arms.

I barged in. When Lina saw me, she shot up from Matthew’s lap in fright. “W-William…”

The next night, a hunched figure appeared in front of Smooth Rides. It was Matthew. He no longer looked as high-spirited as before. When he saw me, he threw himself at my feet. His voice quivered as he asked for my help.“Mr. York, please save my dad! The loan sharks came to my house, and my dad had a heart attack!“I need to pay a deposit for his surgery, and I still need eighty thousand dollars. I already asked for money from my relatives and sold everything that I could.“I really have no other options left…“I know that I’m a horrible person, and if you want my life, take it.”He started slapping his own face.“But please, save my dad. I betrayed you, but he’s innocent!”As I stared at him, I whispered harshly. “If I save your dad, I’d be betraying my dead mother.”Matthew was stunned and stopped slapping himself. As he stared at me, he opened his mouth before shutting it. Then, he got up and limped away. I remembered how I could only see my mom under a white sheet. Bac

Lina scoffed at him. “Give you back the money? What you bought for me belongs to me! If you hadn’t seduced me, I wouldn’t have divorced William! Stop acting so cocky, you homewrecker!”“You witch…” Matthew rushed over to grab Lina’s hair, but Lina turned around, grabbed her bag, and slammed it against his head. “You don’t have any skills, and you still became a homewrecker! Bah!”Matthew was sent sprawling on the ground, and he howled while he cradled his head. Lina then wiped the Hermes bag Matthew gave her, dragged her suitcase along, and left. As Matthew watched Lina leave, his gaze turned even more ruthless. …A month passed when I heard about Matthew next. Over the past month, many things happened to Smooth Rides. We became famous online, and business boomed. The old employees of Safe Driving came over to work with us. Someone from Safe Driving’s headquarters then came to me.“Mr. York, we’d like you to become the owner of a branch shop. You can have twice your b

If Matthew could backstab his own teacher for the sake of profit, he absolutely could throw a friend under the bus. As Matthew’s confidante, when something threatened his reputation, Matthew shoved Nathan forward to take the blame, just like usual. An enemy of an enemy was a friend. I had not expected to work together with Nathan, even though I often argued with Nathan due to a clash in ideals. Nathan inserted his pendrive into a laptop and showed us all the proof.“Aside from only changing parts and never repairing anything, he likes using inferior parts. He uses refurbished brake pads and shock absorbers to replace the parts.“He also got a batch of fake engine oil and bribed the leader of the inspection group. Both of them are the same sort of people. The proof of deducting the employees’ salaries and pocketing the one-million-dollar bonus are all here.”“Why do you have these things?” I looked at him in surprise. There was no way he could have collected all this evidence

In just a few minutes after Gary uploaded the posts, the car groups went wild. [Oh? Are they going up against each other head-on?][That’s exciting. Wasn’t Mr. York originally from Safe Driving?][I heard that Mr. Darwin was originally his apprentice. What’s going on? Are they doing this for clout?][I’m here with the popcorn…]…At 7:30 a.m. the next day, people were already gathered at Smooth Rides.Gary had the phone stand propped up and welcomed the first victim. “Take a look, Mr. York.” Luke, the owner of the car, handed me the receipt from Safe Driving. “My car just gets a little too loud when going over bumps, and I don’t understand any of the parts they want me to change. Everything adds up to 4,200 dollars.”I slid under the car to check and found the problem in the end. “One of the screws for the engine splash shield is loose.”In less than ten seconds, I tightened the screw, and all the strange noises disappeared.“That’s it?” Luke’s mouth hung open once he saw

Mr. Lane’s Rolls-Royce soon arrived in front of Smooth Rides. “I miss you so much, Mr. York!” Mr. Lane perked up when he saw me.Then, he saw the state of the shop and frowned. “Why did you come here? When I went to look for you, Matthew said you resigned. “After that scammer checked my car, he wanted me to change multiple parts and charge me fifty thousand dollars. “Blast it! If I didn’t know a bit about cars, I would have been scammed out of all my money, like the other idiots in my car group.”Gary bristled upon hearing that. “Fifty thousand?! Has he lost his mind?!”After I finished checking his car, I took off my gloves.“This is the vacuum hose. It’s in charge of controlling the turbo wastegate. The hose cracked because it’s too old, and gas is spilling out. “That’s why the wastegate won’t open, and that messes up the turbo pressure, causing the engine to tremble and the check engine light to light up.“A vacuum hose only costs around dozens of dollars. I’ll remove t

The next morning, after signing the divorce agreement with Lina, I went to the eastern side of the city with Gary. “Smooth Rides Repair Shop? It really is located in a very secluded part of the city.”I stared at the signboard. It was surrounded by old houses, and the cars going inside for repairs were fewer than half of what Safe Driving Repair Shop had. Clyde Clark was squatting at the entrance of the shop while smoking. When he saw us, he put out the cigarette and stood up. “Mr. Clark, I’m Gary. I came here last time. This is my teacher, William York.”“William York from Safe Driving?!” Clyde’s eyes lit up as he shook my hand. “Mr. York, why are you here at my rundown place?”Clyde had us sit on the stools by the entrance, and we started talking. I did not answer why I came to his place, though. Instead, I asked him some questions. I had already learned my lesson.I had to work with someone who shared my ideals to be able to work well with them. I had to choose a good
