Lauren was almost skipping her way to Julian’s office excited about a surprise lunch date but as she approached, the soft sound of laughter coming from in there left her wondering if he was having another guest.
Inside, two bodies lay tangled in silk sheets. Celine rested her head against his chest, her voice low and filled with amusement. “Lauren is such a fool, you know. After all this time, she still believes you love her.” “She’s too easy to manipulate. I barely even try, and she still believes every word I say.” Celine chuckled, tracing lazy circles across his skin. “I can’t wait to see her face when she finds out. It is still a wonder she hasn't found out you've been using her design but like you said, she’s slow and unsuspecting. And for the heiress she thinks she is, that's pathetic.” “She’s living in a dream,” Julian replied. “Without me, she’d be nothing. Her name means nothing now and the company she thinks she’s building? It’s mine.” He sneered, “She thinks I'll marry her? Such a joker!” His voice sounded cold. When a few seconds passed without Celine saying a word, Julian made a move to get up. “Well, I can say it's ours because soon, “little miss heiress” will be nothing but a loser and the stepping stone to our dream life.” Their laughter filled the room again. It was intimate and poisonous seeping into Lauren’s bone as she stood outside the door listening. She stared down at the lunch box trembling in her hands. Her fingers clenched until the edges dug into her skin but she didn’t feel the pain. Her eyes stared blankly at the closed door, her mind struggling to process the voices she knew too well. Her two favourite humans in the world were just behind that door gossiping and planning her downfall like she was just a stumbling block in their path. She wondered how she had been so dumb and blind to their antics all along. Well, love they say makes you stupid. Her breath came in shallow bursts as every memory flashed before her eyes. The nights she stayed up helping him perfect his presentations, the designs she gave him freely because she believed in his dream, even when she had been asked to step back in the shadows because his so called family doesn't like their daughter in law in the limelight, she abandoned her growing fame and career as the best jewellery designer, but.. All the sacrifices she made in the name of love. And now, this. She wanted to scream. To barge into that room and point accusing fingers but just as she took a step, a soft moan echoed from inside stopping her dead in her tracks. Her knees wobbled, her vision blurred and a laugh escaped her lips. “Good… good… you all did good.” Her voice cracked on the last word, laced with pain she couldn’t hide. She swallowed hard, straightened her back, and forced herself to turn away. As her heels hit the floor, each step heavier than the last but she determined in her heart to leave that building with her head up.When she reached the front desk, the receptionist looked up, startled by her pale face and trembling hands. “If Julian asks,” Lauren said quietly, “don’t tell him I was here.” She didn’t wait for a reply. With her head up, she walked out. Outside, the air felt colder. Her steps faltered as she reached her car. Opening the back, her grip on the lunch box loosened until it slipped from her fingers, hitting the seat with a dull thud. Her body swayed and her chest was at the verge of bursting open with everything she’d been holding in. “Not yet, Lauren. Just a little longer.” She whispered to herself but once inside the car, the silence broke her. She screamed aching from the pain of the heart wrenching betrayal. Her voice cracked as tears spilled down her cheeks. Pressing her forehead against the steering wheel, her shoulders began shaking burdened by the weight of love, betrayal, and disbelief. Lauren though determined and purpose driven had given up so much for a man who had turned her into a joke. She thought of Celine, the friend she’d trusted like a sister, entangled under the same sheets she had laid in too often and suddenly, a surge of anger overcame her. Crying suddenly felt like a weakness and she bit her lip to stop the next sob. Then her phone rang. She blinked, wiping her face with trembling fingers before answering. “Lauren, sweetheart,” came the calm, familiar voice of her lawyer, Aunt Catherine. “Do you know what day it is in three days?” Lauren stared at the dashboard, trying so hard to hide her wounded voice. “What’s going on?” Aunt Catherine sighed softly. “You forgot again, didn’t you? It’s your twenty-fifth birthday. The day you’re supposed to collect the safe your mother left for you. Remember what she said?” The words hit her like a cold wave. Lauren swallowed, her chest tightening. “How could I forget,” she said quietly. “Without a marriage certificate, I can’t inherit the only thing my mother left for me.” “Exacty. Have you told Julian? Is he ready to marry you? Because if you don’t claim it on your birthday, you might lose your opportunity to claim it for life.” Lauren’s throat suddenly felt choked. She couldn’t speak and her heart ached all over from what she had just heard, and now this reminder cut deeper. For a long moment, she said nothing. Then, slowly, her eyes hardened and the trembling stopped. “Don’t worry, Aunty, I’ll claim it.” She gripped the steering wheel tightly. “It’s the only thing I have left of her.” Inside her chest pain turned into a resolve. She would not lose everything because of a hopeless cheat. Even if she had to play dumb, she would get what was hers.“Are you satisfied with what you saw?” Lauren gasped, her heart beat increased and she felt so hot and confused. She didn't know what to do or where to place her hand. She had never been cornered or rendered helpless by someone this shameless. Somehow, her palm landed on his chest and both of them froze. Lauren looked up speechlessly and met the dark eyes of Alexander. His eyes were so dark and deep that they made her panic. Her heart shook and she immediately removed her hands from his chest but who knew Alex would suddenly capture them and pull her hands up. Alex looked at the face very close to his and his breathing slowed down, his eyes held fire in them and they burned through Lauren. His eyes traced her face and then stopped on her lips. He looked at those lips of hers deeply and a dangerous thought filled his mind, and without holding back, he bent down and pressed his lips on hers. Gasp! Lauren’s eyes widened when she felt those cold lips on her warm ones. Her mind went
“He…He is here!” Lauren stiffened on the bed when she felt the other side of the bed go deep. Her eyes closed nervously and her fingers pinched themselves.A lot ran through her mind but not once did she think of rejecting him if he wanted to really consummate their marriage.Though she had never done it before and the most she had done was kiss and hug, she still knew that satisfying him was also her duty as his wife and though she couldn't help but feel awkward because she hadn't known him for long, she could try to know him. Suddenly, her mind went blank when she felt the breath very close to her neck. Her brain froze and she couldn't even pretend to be asleep anymore. Suddenly, she heard a low chuckle in her ear which made her body tremble. Confusion appeared on her face and even when she wished to turn around to look at the person or ask him what he was laughing about, her body had long gone stiff.“Don't suffocate yourself, Lauren. I know you aren't asleep.” Alexander’s voic
“Ou-Our room?!” Lauren stammered while pointing at herself in doubt. “Yes,” Alexander responded calmly, but then as he looked at the dazed Lauren who stood still in that same position, his brain flashed and he realised why she had been stunned. He frowned deeply and then looked at her, “What? Seems Mrs Ashford has forgotten the words I said today when we got the certificate?” “Huh?” Lauren asked, her brain still stunned from the announcement that they would sleep together. She looked up and met the deep and cold eyes of Alex which told her the seriousness of things. “If My madam has forgotten, then I don't mind helping her remember,” Alex said, then stood up and walked towards her with an aura that was so powerful that they made Lauren’s heart beat louder in nervousness. Finally, he stopped in front of her and looked at her deeply, then he said, “I, Alexander Ashford, don't believe in a scam marriage. The moment you agreed to this marriage and signed that certificate, I alread
The car slowed down as it approached a mountain area, and when Lauren saw where they were, she became shocked. Her eyes widened in disbelief, but she continued to remain calm while observing the situation. When the car entered the large security gate which was kept safe by some military men, and she saw the real mountain area, her heart finally couldn't stay calm anymore.Though she didn't react exaggeratedly, that still didn't stop her from showing her disbelief. She really wanted to ask the man who sat quietly next to her but when she looked at the laptop he was working on, she swallowed back the question she had, but who knew when she turned back to continue looking out of the window, the man whom she thought hadn't been paying attention to her would close his laptop and throw her a glance.“If you have a question, you should go ahead and ask. You don't need to be reserved when it comes to me.” Lauren was startled by the calm voice that sounded in the car, and when his words regi
“Then, go with me to get married now!” “Huh?!” Julian was shocked. He was only trying to make her feel guilty when he heard her words. He stood there like he had lost his mind, the words of Lauren kept on repeating in his head and suddenly, he panicked. He didn't want to get married to her. He was just trying to coax her and then keep delaying things until they got everything they needed from her, but who knew Lauren would be so desperate to get married? Get married? To Lauren? Hell no! He would never get married to a fool like Lauren. She couldn't dress seductively for him, she was too uptight and all she knew was to listen to orders. He had never liked that kind of woman. Truly, he had liked Lauren at first when he was still pursuing her. She had been young, fresh and innocent then and she had this high-class aura that made one want to worship her. She was cold but gentle, intelligent but not arrogant, and her aura brought out her beauty to the top, but, after she became obses
In an apartment, a figure buzzed around the room, packing things into her bags and making sure nothing was left behind. The person was Lauren. She was dressed in casual wear with her hair tied in a low bun, and she had an expressionless face as if this place wasn't somewhere she had called her home for years. Suddenly, her eyes paused on the frame she had placed on the bedside table and finally, the emotions she had kept hidden showed on her face. Her face turned pale and her lips trembled, but she still swallowed hard and picked up her courage to walk to the frame. She picked it up with her trembling fingers and her eyes deepened with emotion seeing the three people with a joyful smile. The picture was of Lauren, Celine and Julian. This picture was taken on their graduation and the smiles on their faces were happiness and carefreeness. Her fingers caressed their faces and her lips gradually curled up in a small sneer. “How could I be so stupid as not to know something was going on
