Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: Alyssa J
“Yep, Mr. Mercer dropped him off two days ago.” The owner sounded perfectly normal.

“Please don’t let anyone take him. I’m on my way right now.” He agreed without hesitation.

I took a shortcut and floored it to the boarding place. I ran inside. The kennel door was open and there was no sign of the owner.

“You haven’t changed a bit, have you? Still the same gullible little girl.”

Ashley’s voice made my whole body go rigid.

My face was different, my name was different, and yet she’d still found me.

“Does this dog remind you of the one you lost when you were ten?”

“I had Lucas find him for you. As a gift.”

She had Buddy in a death grip and he was trembling all over. I spotted the macadamia nuts in her hand and lunged.

When Buddy was two months old, he’d almost died after eating nuts.

The second I had him, she leaned in close and whispered, “The dog you lost when you were ten, the way it screamed when it died? That sound was something else.” While I was still reeling, she kicked me into the grooming tub.

Lucas came out from the back at the sound and frowned when he saw me.

“Lucas, she’s crazy!” Ashley looked panicked. “She was trying to drown Buddy and pin it on me.” He stepped forward, scooped up Buddy, and shoved me back down into the water. “Pathetic.”

I came up choking. “She was feeding him macadamia nuts. Get him to a vet, now!”

“Know your place, Sofia.” Lucas’s voice was ice. “Everything you have is because of Ashley. That includes Buddy.”

I climbed out, water soaking through my clothes. That helpless feeling was one I knew. Being homeless for that one year had taught me the exact same sensation.

Three days without food. I’d collapsed against the steps of a 7-Eleven, barely conscious, when a bucket of cold water hit me from above.

The store manager had yanked me by the hair and called me a thief. A crowd had closed in and I didn’t have the strength to say a word in my own defense.

Then Lucas had appeared and put his jacket around my shoulders. He said he believed me. He said as long as he was around, no one would ever wrongly accuse me again.

I wrung the water out of my pants and looked up at Buddy in his arms. He hadn’t moved.

“Lucas, Buddy’s not doing well. Please, just let me take him to the vet.” My voice cracked. I was practically begging.

Lucas hesitated. Ashley stepped up and curled her lip. “Give it to her. The dog’s been tainted anyway.”

Then his phone rang. Buddy was dropped as Lucas answered, his voice going cold. “What? They’re pulling their investment?”

His eyes turned hard. He hung up and backed me into the wall. “You went after our client, didn’t you?” he said through his teeth. “You think you’re the CEO’s wife now?”

I pushed back. “I didn’t do anything.”

Before I could say more, Ashley touched his shoulder, her voice going soft. “Hey. Leave it. I’ll deal with the client. Nobody’s going to mess with you.”

Lucas visibly relaxed.

“Ashley, thank you.” He let go of my shoulders. “Don’t let me see your face again, Sofia.”

I shoved past him and made a run for my car with Buddy in my arms. Both hands on the wheel, heart hammering. Buddy had to be okay. I kept pinching my thigh to stay alert.

Two blocks out, a pickup truck blew through an intersection straight into my path. I screamed and hit the brakes. Then nothing.

When I came to, Lucas was standing at the foot of the hospital bed, looking down at me. “How are you still alive?”

I tried to push myself upright. “Where’s Buddy?”

“You drove into that truck on purpose,” he said. “You wanted to force my hand. To make Ashley feel guilty.” He narrowed his eyes and dropped his voice. “Sofia, when did you get so desperate? If Ashley walks because of this, I’ll make sure you go down with her.”

He turned at the door and stopped. “Oh, and five years ago? That manager who threw water on you? I paid him to do it.”

My legs gave out trying to get out of bed. I grabbed the edge of the mattress as the door slammed. The whole thing. Even that. A setup.

I checked my injuries quietly. Just a little blood, already clotting. A few minutes later, my assistant arrived. She was the only person who knew my real identity, my connection to Grandpa, and my status as heir.

“Ms. Harlow. The recording from the arsonist, Ashley Calloway’s audio, and the surveillance screenshots.” She handed me a USB drive and a folder. “Your grandfather has selected five fiancé candidates. Will you see them?”

I flipped through the file. East Coast families, all with ties the Harlow Group could use. “Yes. Tonight. All five at once.”

I closed the folder, voice hoarse. “Also, get someone to pull the dashcam from the car and check the parking garage footage. And find Buddy.”

A week later, all four families issued public announcements naming new heirs. Partnerships resumed as agreed. My workload grew.Friday night, after the last video call, I stared out at the city lights and had a sudden, specific craving. Tortellini in brodo.I didn’t think twice. I grabbed my bag and went, pulling up to my usual spot, a little Italian place that had no business being this good.“Hey, can I get the tortellini in brodo? Extra basil.”The owner recognized me and smiled. “You’ve been so busy lately, sweetheart. Your boyfriend’s been coming every day waiting for you. You finally made it.”I stopped and looked toward my usual table. Lucas Mercer was already on his feet. “Sofia…”“Can you make it to go? Thanks.” I was too hungry to deal with this.He came toward me. “You haven’t eaten tonight, right? You always forget to eat when you’re busy. I made chicken soup.”I looked at the insulated container he was holding. My container. The one I’d given him.“Lucas, are you still per

I got out of the car.Ethan White held out a single white page. “Jay and I got married in Iceland last month. Until I become head of the White family, I’d rather not make it complicated.”His voice was formal. His grip on Jay’s hand was not.I photographed the marriage certificate and gave a small nod. “Thank you for being straight with me. No issues on my end. Looking forward to the partnership.”I extended my hand. Jay took it first. A brief, startled silence, and then Jay smiled and said in slightly accented English: “Pleasure working with you!”The two of them exchanged a few low words. Ethan White’s ears went red. I made a tactful retreat to my car, and something tight in my chest let go.After this, the Calloway family would never recover. Ashley’s father had escaped for now, but I hadn’t forgotten what he’d done to my mother’s family. That account was still open.I pressed the gas and headed back to the office. Today was the rescheduled all-hands meeting. I got out of the elevat

Through the visiting glass, Ashley looked hollowed out. Her eyes still burned. The moment I sat down, her face twisted and she hurled herself at the partition before the guards yanked her back.“Stella. I should’ve watched you burn!”“Keeping you alive was the single biggest mistake I ever made. I should’ve sold you off back then and made you suffer every single day. You and your worthless parents both deserved to die!”“You have no right to exist!”She kept going until her voice started to crack. I watched her without expression. When her throat finally gave out, I spoke.“You dragged me here just to say this?” Her jaw tightened.“Ashley, our family never once shorted you. Every time you came to stay with us, my parents gave you the master bedroom and moved me to the guest room. Whatever I had, you had too, usually more.”I leaned close to the glass and dropped my voice. “What were you actually angry about?”She tipped her head back and scrubbed her face with both hands. A short silen

The next day, clips from the Harlow family ceremony swept across Twitter, TikTok, and Instagram. Lucas Mercer became a meme, and the internet was dragging him from every angle. People showed up at his office and his apartment throwing paint and dumping trash. Security blocked wave after wave and still couldn’t stop them all.Meanwhile, Ashley’s story was being kept off the front page. Before the verdict, I wasn’t going to let the press anywhere near it. Nothing could go sideways. The best news was that Buddy woke up. He couldn’t run yet, but his eyes were bright. He nudged his nose into my palm the way he always had, small and warm and persistent. The fake dog abuse video was confirmed as a deepfake, and cease and desist letters were already in Lucas’s inbox. Once I’d cleared the loose ends, I walked toward the conference room. Today was my first company-wide meeting as head of the Harlow Group. The MC finished the introduction and applause came from the floor. I was reaching for the

Every conversation in the room stopped at once. I walked up to the stage and met Grandpa’s eyes, then turned to face the room.“Over the past decade, the people who were working against this family from the inside have all been removed. Tonight is the last one. The Calloway family.”Ashley jerked and fought but couldn’t get free. “Shut up! I’m the only heir there is!” She whipped toward Grandpa. “You old man, I should’ve swapped out your pills when I had the chance! Everything our family did for the Harlows, and this is what we get?”Her voice turned shrill. “Her parents are dead and buried. She’s contributed nothing. This is happening because her mother had the Harlow name and mine had Calloway?!” She kept screaming until the officers dragged her out.Murmurs rose across the room. I didn’t engage. I brought up the documentation on the screen.“Over the past decade, the Calloway family is alleged to have misappropriated one hundred and fifty million dollars in Harlow Group funds, redir

Eight o’clock. Half an hour until the announcement ceremony. The ballroom was packed. I scanned the room. Every major East Coast family was represented, including the four from the afternoon. I walked in on Ethan White’s arm, all in black. The crowd converged immediately. One by one they produced business cards, careful and deferential, extending them to the White heir, the man who rarely showed his face despite the family’s standing alongside the Harlows.“Sofia. The hell are you doing here?” Lucas’s voice was low and tense. He was rattled until his eyes landed on the man beside me, and a flicker of excitement replaced it.“She’s with me,” said Ethan White quietly.Lucas pivoted smoothly to full warmth. “Mr. White, she’s my ex. She’s been running a scheme and she’ll drag your name into it if you let her. She threatened to kill herself to force me to marry her. She hurt a dog. It’s everywhere online, take ten seconds and look. Please don’t let her ruin this evening or taint the White n
