Chapter 3

ผู้เขียน: Alyssa J
I asked everywhere, hospitals, boarding places, every vet I knew. Nothing.

The Harlow family heir announcement was tomorrow. Per tradition, my fiancé had to be named tonight.

I changed carefully into something loose-fitting and headed to a hotel in Midtown Manhattan. Inside, representatives from the Walker, Dunn, Cole, and Astor families were already seated. Significant names on the East Coast, though all ranked below the Harlows.

All four pairs of eyes swept toward me with barely concealed assessment. They knew I was a Harlow. They didn’t know I was the heir.

The private room door opened again. I assumed it would be the eldest White grandson.

It was Lucas Mercer.

“Can’t shake you, can I, Sofia.” He said it, then swapped immediately to a professional smile and extended his hand to the four men.

“Gentlemen, Walker, Dunn, Cole, Astor, I’m so sorry for the wasted trip. She’s my ex. She’s been struggling since the breakup, convinced herself she’s a Harlow heiress.”

He pulled out his phone and held it toward them. “She’s been violent. Emotionally unstable. It’s all over social media, look it up and you’ll see.” It was the clip of Ashley pushing me into the grooming tub, audio cut.

He performed it beautifully. The four men hadn’t spoken, but their expressions were shifting.

“Lucas, what I am has nothing to do with you. Get out.” I kept my anger in check. I didn’t want him derailing the evening.

He gave the room a pained smile. “I really didn’t want to do this. I was trying to protect you all.” He played another clip. “She just killed my fiancée’s dog.”

My patience ran out. I called for security. Then a tiny yelp came through his phone speaker. Everything in me went cold. I lunged for his phone, trying to see if that was Buddy in the footage.

He didn’t dodge. His other hand clamped down on my arm. “You really think you can climb this high and hurt me in the process? Know your limits.”

At that moment, the hotel manager and security pushed through the door. Ashley was with them, her face drawn and eyes red-rimmed. She raised a shaking finger at me. “She’s the one who hurt that dog.”

“It’s already all over Twitter and TikTok. You’re going to pay for what you did to Buddy!”

My chest squeezed. I grabbed my phone and pulled up the video, scrubbing through it frame by frame, zooming in.

Something was off.

That wasn’t Buddy. There was no blue collar on its neck, the one I’d tied there myself. Looking closer, it might not even have been a dog.

I needed another second to be sure, but security had already grabbed my arms and was dragging me toward the door. I caught a glimpse of all four business cards landing in Lucas’s hands, Ashley standing beside him, watching me go with a smile.

The next second I was thrown out the front of the hotel. My phone skidded across the steps, and I was reaching for it when a long, steady hand picked it up and held it out to me.

My assistant. I took it and answered immediately.

“Ms. Harlow, Buddy is at the emergency vet. Someone tampered with your brake fluid.” A brief pause. “Your grandfather is asking which candidate you selected.”

My chest tightened. No fiancé tonight, and the old guard would start making noise by morning.

“None of the four work. The White son was late—” Before I could finish, that same hand appeared again.

“Hello. I’m Ethan White.”

A week later, all four families issued public announcements naming new heirs. Partnerships resumed as agreed. My workload grew.Friday night, after the last video call, I stared out at the city lights and had a sudden, specific craving. Tortellini in brodo.I didn’t think twice. I grabbed my bag and went, pulling up to my usual spot, a little Italian place that had no business being this good.“Hey, can I get the tortellini in brodo? Extra basil.”The owner recognized me and smiled. “You’ve been so busy lately, sweetheart. Your boyfriend’s been coming every day waiting for you. You finally made it.”I stopped and looked toward my usual table. Lucas Mercer was already on his feet. “Sofia…”“Can you make it to go? Thanks.” I was too hungry to deal with this.He came toward me. “You haven’t eaten tonight, right? You always forget to eat when you’re busy. I made chicken soup.”I looked at the insulated container he was holding. My container. The one I’d given him.“Lucas, are you still per

I got out of the car.Ethan White held out a single white page. “Jay and I got married in Iceland last month. Until I become head of the White family, I’d rather not make it complicated.”His voice was formal. His grip on Jay’s hand was not.I photographed the marriage certificate and gave a small nod. “Thank you for being straight with me. No issues on my end. Looking forward to the partnership.”I extended my hand. Jay took it first. A brief, startled silence, and then Jay smiled and said in slightly accented English: “Pleasure working with you!”The two of them exchanged a few low words. Ethan White’s ears went red. I made a tactful retreat to my car, and something tight in my chest let go.After this, the Calloway family would never recover. Ashley’s father had escaped for now, but I hadn’t forgotten what he’d done to my mother’s family. That account was still open.I pressed the gas and headed back to the office. Today was the rescheduled all-hands meeting. I got out of the elevat

Through the visiting glass, Ashley looked hollowed out. Her eyes still burned. The moment I sat down, her face twisted and she hurled herself at the partition before the guards yanked her back.“Stella. I should’ve watched you burn!”“Keeping you alive was the single biggest mistake I ever made. I should’ve sold you off back then and made you suffer every single day. You and your worthless parents both deserved to die!”“You have no right to exist!”She kept going until her voice started to crack. I watched her without expression. When her throat finally gave out, I spoke.“You dragged me here just to say this?” Her jaw tightened.“Ashley, our family never once shorted you. Every time you came to stay with us, my parents gave you the master bedroom and moved me to the guest room. Whatever I had, you had too, usually more.”I leaned close to the glass and dropped my voice. “What were you actually angry about?”She tipped her head back and scrubbed her face with both hands. A short silen

The next day, clips from the Harlow family ceremony swept across Twitter, TikTok, and Instagram. Lucas Mercer became a meme, and the internet was dragging him from every angle. People showed up at his office and his apartment throwing paint and dumping trash. Security blocked wave after wave and still couldn’t stop them all.Meanwhile, Ashley’s story was being kept off the front page. Before the verdict, I wasn’t going to let the press anywhere near it. Nothing could go sideways. The best news was that Buddy woke up. He couldn’t run yet, but his eyes were bright. He nudged his nose into my palm the way he always had, small and warm and persistent. The fake dog abuse video was confirmed as a deepfake, and cease and desist letters were already in Lucas’s inbox. Once I’d cleared the loose ends, I walked toward the conference room. Today was my first company-wide meeting as head of the Harlow Group. The MC finished the introduction and applause came from the floor. I was reaching for the

Every conversation in the room stopped at once. I walked up to the stage and met Grandpa’s eyes, then turned to face the room.“Over the past decade, the people who were working against this family from the inside have all been removed. Tonight is the last one. The Calloway family.”Ashley jerked and fought but couldn’t get free. “Shut up! I’m the only heir there is!” She whipped toward Grandpa. “You old man, I should’ve swapped out your pills when I had the chance! Everything our family did for the Harlows, and this is what we get?”Her voice turned shrill. “Her parents are dead and buried. She’s contributed nothing. This is happening because her mother had the Harlow name and mine had Calloway?!” She kept screaming until the officers dragged her out.Murmurs rose across the room. I didn’t engage. I brought up the documentation on the screen.“Over the past decade, the Calloway family is alleged to have misappropriated one hundred and fifty million dollars in Harlow Group funds, redir

Eight o’clock. Half an hour until the announcement ceremony. The ballroom was packed. I scanned the room. Every major East Coast family was represented, including the four from the afternoon. I walked in on Ethan White’s arm, all in black. The crowd converged immediately. One by one they produced business cards, careful and deferential, extending them to the White heir, the man who rarely showed his face despite the family’s standing alongside the Harlows.“Sofia. The hell are you doing here?” Lucas’s voice was low and tense. He was rattled until his eyes landed on the man beside me, and a flicker of excitement replaced it.“She’s with me,” said Ethan White quietly.Lucas pivoted smoothly to full warmth. “Mr. White, she’s my ex. She’s been running a scheme and she’ll drag your name into it if you let her. She threatened to kill herself to force me to marry her. She hurt a dog. It’s everywhere online, take ten seconds and look. Please don’t let her ruin this evening or taint the White n
