Chapter 1

Author: Dawn of Spring
Charles Ford's voice came through from the other end of the line. His voice was low and a little hoarse. "Whitney, what nonsense are you talking about?"

I let out a soft laugh, tinged with mockery. "You saw the news, didn't you? That wonderful son of yours? He disgusts me. I'm serious. I want someone else."

There was a pause. Silence for a few seconds, and then his voice returned, trembling slightly, "This isn't something we can talk about over the phone. I'll come see you."

"Sure," I said coolly, "I'll be waiting at home."

The corners of my lips lifted into a small smile, my eyes flashing with quiet determination.

Charles was just a little over thirty, but due to a hereditary condition that made it difficult for him to have children, years of IVF attempts all failed. In the end, he had no choice but to adopt Jayden Ford from a distant branch of the family and groom him as the heir.

As for my family—the Sheridan family—our place in this marriage with the Ford family rested entirely on one thing: the Sheridan women's famed fertility lineage, passed down for generations.

Legend had it that women from the Sheridan family conceived easily and often gave birth to twins or multiples.

Regardless of what happened to my father, this marriage between the Ford and Sheridan families was always a silent, mutual understanding. It was a transaction that benefited both parties.

What I did not expect was for Jayden, after five years of dating me, to be dumb enough to father an illegitimate child right before our engagement banquet—and then have the nerve to expect me to swallow my pride and go through with it.

He thought I would stay quiet and obedient? He did not know me at all.

I, Whitney Sheridan, was not the type to suffer in silence.

Not long after I hung up the phone, the doorbell rang, sharp and insistent.

Standing outside was Charles, his expression a complicated mix of emotions.

Just as he was about to speak, I grabbed him by the tie and pulled him into the room.

"Whitney, you—"

Before he could finish, I kissed him—firmly, deliberately, shutting him up. My fingertips slid along the collar of his shirt, then down the line of his buttons.

There was no hesitation in my actions, no shyness. I made my intentions crystal clear.

I was not bluffing—I meant every word I said.

I could feel his internal struggle, his hesitation, but in the end, desire won out. He gave in.

We indulged in a night of reckless passion.

Afterward, as he held me in his arms, his voice was husky and low.

"There are some urgent matters I need to handle overseas. I'm flying out tomorrow—it might take a while. Wait for me."

"What about the wedding?"

He lowered his eyes and looked at me.

"It'll go on as planned. I'll make it back in time. You're the Sheridan family's only daughter, and the one most fit to marry into the Ford family."

After he left, I intended to crawl back into bed and catch up on sleep, but my phone buzzed insistently from the nightstand.

  • For Better, Not Yours   Chapter 10

Charles stared at Jayden, his eyes burning with fury as if they could shoot fire. "Jayden Ford! You've completely lost control! Beating a woman? Are you even human anymore?" "Dad! I didn't! It was her! She betrayed me!" Jayden stammered in his defense, pointing at Lunara, who lay on the floor. His face was twisted in anger, but beneath that, there was a deeper emotion—shame and humiliation from being betrayed. "You're still making excuses?" Charles raised his hand and delivered a loud, vicious slap to Jayden's face. The force behind it was immense, causing Jayden to stagger backward from the blow. Leaning weakly in Charles's arms, I watched the scene unfold with a glee that was hard to suppress, like sipping ice-cold juice on the hottest summer day. "Get out! Get the hell out of the Ford family! As of today, you are no longer my son!" Charles could tolerate countless disappointments, but harming his children? That was the one thing he would never forgive. These two

"It's not true! Jayden, please listen to me! The baby is yours!" A sharp, resounding slap echoed through the room. "You bitch! What do you have to say to this? The DNA results are in. How much longer are you planning to lie to me?!" Lunara's cries and pleas kept coming, interspersed with the thuds of heavy objects crashing to the floor. Downstairs, I sipped on my tea slowly and contentedly, listening to the chaos upstairs. I could not have felt more at ease. When Lunara's screams turned increasingly shrill and desperate, I figured it was about time to intervene. Putting on a worried expression, I gently held my waist, carefully making my way up the stairs, one slow step at a time. I stood outside their bedroom door, raised my voice, and called out with concern. "Oh, Jayden, come on now. What couple doesn't argue now and then? Lunara did give birth to your child, didn't she? How could you raise your hand against her like this?" Inside, Lunara's cries became even more m

Much to my surprise, Lunara ended up giving me the best assist I could ask for. To give birth before Jayden and I got engaged, Lunara secretly took labor-inducing drugs. As a result, the baby was born prematurely and left with chronic health issues. With the season changing, even the slightest breeze would send the child to the hospital. Jayden was practically living at the hospital, his eyes full of anxiety and exhaustion. Naturally, he had no energy left to deal with company affairs. Charles was already dissatisfied with his recent performance. Now, with Jayden constantly disappearing every few days, things finally boiled over when a subordinate reported a major failure in one of Jayden's projects. Charles lost it. "Jayden! Are you trying to hand this company over to someone else? If you can't even handle something this small, what else are you good for? You're useless!" During a high-level executive meeting, Charles slammed his hand on the table and laid it on Jayd

"Well, my dear, was that a surprise to your satisfaction?" Charles gripped my hand tightly, his voice trembling with emotion. "Whitney, you've given me the greatest gift I could ever imagine! You have no idea, all these years, I've been tormented by the fact that I might never have children of my own. "But now, not only are you giving me two children, but you're also doing it at the moment I needed it most. I've made up my mind. From today on, 6% of Ford Corporation's shares will be yours." Gasps rippled through the crowd. 6% of Ford Corporation—that was an astronomical figure, enough to make any elite family go green with envy. Jayden's face turned even darker. After all these years of being groomed as the heir, Charles never granted him any real shares, not a single percent. Suddenly, Jayden snapped, his voice taut with suppressed fury. "Dad, are you serious? How do you even know those kids are yours?" I laughed coldly in my heart. He could not hold it in any long

All eyes turned to Lunara, every gaze laced with unfiltered contempt and scorn. Her face went ghostly pale. She clutched the hem of her gown tightly, fingers trembling. The room was full of sharp-minded elites—there was no need to spell it out. They understood exactly what had just happened. "Whitney, are you insane?" Jayden shouted, his voice cracking. "How could you marry my father? You love me! You always have!" I did not say a word. Instead, I simply raised my hand and slapped him across the other cheek. Everyone gasped, and the entire room fell into stunned silence. This time, Jayden was truly stunned. He stood there in a daze, his eyes wide with disbelief and simmering fury. "You, you dared to hit me?" I calmly withdrew my hand, my expression serene, my voice flat. "So what if I did? Jayden, it's time you faced reality. This isn't about revenge. I married Charles because I like him. In every single way, he's a better man than you." I paused deliberately, watch

My fingertips gently brushed across the embossed invitation in my hand. The gold lettering shimmered under the light, clearly spelling out: Mr. Charles Ford & Ms. Whitney Sheridan. The corners of my lips lifted into a faint, serene smile. Downstairs, Jayden and Lunara's wedding should be starting now. Or maybe not, given how embarrassingly few guests showed up. Meanwhile, upstairs, at my wedding, the atmosphere was entirely different. Inside the lavishly decorated grand ballroom, political elites and business moguls filled every seat. I strolled down the aisle, arm in arm with Charles. He stood tall and composed, his presence commanding. Unlike Jayden, his presence held the weight of time and the gravitas of a mighty man. He leaned close to whisper in my ear, "Don't be nervous." I looked up at him with a calm smile. "With you by my side, there's nothing to be nervous about." When he slid the ring onto my finger, my heart did not race the way I imagined it would. I
