Chapter 2

Author: Nathan Joe
Cecelia slid down the cold wall with her back against it, her body losing strength until she sat on the floor. The floor was spotless, but it felt icy to the bone.

The faint laughter from the private room stung her heart. All those sweet recollections turned into the cruelest of mockery, tearing apart every cherished memory and all her feelings.

She realized she had been living a carefully crafted deception. Francis used their marriage and her love just to protect the woman he truly cared about.

Cecelia stumbled her way home, empty and numb. She simply let the grief and sense of betrayal tear her apart.

-

A few days passed.

Cecelia's phone chimed, and she almost grabbed and unlocked it on instinct.

It was Melody's latest post on her social media, published fifteen minutes ago. No words, just a live photo.

In the warm light of a fancy restaurant, there's a man's hand, pouring red wine for her; a shiny ring is visible on his finger.

In the comments, Melody had added a clarification.

[I landed safely! Nothing feels better than being picked up by people you know! Thank you for waiting with me for three hours!]

So, the important "international acquisition case" that kept him from coming home was really just an excuse to pick up Melody at the airport.

His promise to "spend time with her after work was done" was just a way to soothe Cecelia so he could be there for the woman he actually wanted!

Cecelia's heart became completely cold.

Even her own self-denial was snuffed out by this image.

She wanted to leave!

The thought of leaving had never been so clear or so overwhelming in her mind.

She opened the appointment app on her phone. The earliest date to get a new passport was in seven working days.

There was still time.

Next, she went to the private women's hospital app and stared at the option for "termination of pregnancy."

"Confirm appointment." A cold green notification appeared on the screen.

Cecelia lifted her hand and placed it gently on her belly.

This had been her hope for the future, but now, with all of Francis's lies, all her hopes were in ruins. 'I'm sorry, baby. I can't bring you into a world of lies and manipulation. I can't let you have…a father like this.'

And as for the real culprit behind her father's death, Cecelia would never let her get away.

At the hospital, the doctor looked at her report and sighed. "Mrs. Rivera, the car accident caused severe damage to your pelvis. Being able to get pregnant on its own is already quite a miracle. If you go through with this surgery, well… You may never be able to have a child again."

May never be able to have a child again.

Those words hit Cecelia like a hammer, shattering what little strength she had left.

A sense of hesitation and tenderness as a mother unexpectedly emerged.

Her child… The only child she might ever have… Was she really going to end this miracle herself?

Cecelia left the hospital through the main door in a stupor.

The afternoon sunlight was harsh, and she lowered her head to avoid it. By chance, she caught sight of a giant LED screen on the street corner showing an entertainment news update.

The screen was crystal clear as the camera focused on a charity gala.

Francis stood tall and straight in a perfectly tailored dark suit. He was listening to Melody as he turned to her, who smiled beside him as she talked. She wore a stunning red dress, her makeup impeccable, gazing up at him with trust and admiration.

Standing together, they were the perfect match.

The news ticker below scrolled by like poison.

"Up-and-coming legal superstar Francis Rivera attends charity night with top celebrity Melody Green!"

"Childhood sweethearts with a strong tie! A perfect couple admired by all!"

The netizens commented, "This is what a real power couple looks like! I'm obsessed!"

As for her, the so-called "Mrs. Rivera" didn't exist to anyone in the world Francis constructed.

Cecelia's stomach wriggled. She held onto a cold streetlamp, wanting to throw up—but all that came out was some stomach acid. It felt like someone had forced a huge, icy stone into her chest, and it was so heavy she could barely breathe.

Of course.

She was nothing but a shield for her father's killer.

Nothing but a pathetic joke.

The island wind always carried a salty, free scent. The swaying of the coconut trees could be seen outside the studio window. Sunlight streamed through the massive, tall windows, lighting up the workbench where every precision tool was arranged just so. The same tools that once gathered dust in the corner of a forgotten villa were now alive again under Cecelia's skilled hands. The studio walls were lined with awards and certificates belonging to her mentor and their team. This place wasn't just a refuge anymore. It was the anchor of her career, a harbor where dreams could finally set sail again.During a break, Cecelia's eyes landed on a photo frame on her desk. Inside was a picture of her and Jonathan at a sunset by the sea, standing side by side, their smiles warm and genuine. She picked up her phone and tapped out a brief message. "See you tonight."As dusk settled, Jonathan's car pulled up outside the studio."Want to stop somewhere first?" Jonathan asked, opening the car d

The investigation and trial finally came to an end.The chain of evidence Cecelia submitted was the only weapon she needed, cutting down every last hope Francis and Melody had of escaping justice."The court finds the defendant, Francis Rivera, guilty on multiple counts, including harboring a criminal, perjury, and abuse of power. The defendant is hereby sentenced to fifteen years of imprisonment.""The court further finds the defendant, Melody Green, guilty of vehicular manslaughter, endangering public safety, and intentional injury. The defendant is hereby sentenced to life imprisonment."Every word of the verdict echoed in the silent court, as if each word weighed a ton.Cecelia also finalized her divorce. She got exactly what she wanted, but there was no sense of triumph. There was only a heavy, almost numb exhaustion, like reaching the end of a long, empty journey.Francis was flanked by two armed bailiffs, and he was led out through a side door. The pale sunlight of fall

Cecelia's silence made Francis believe he hadn't punished Melody enough. He was about to kick her a few times again when Cecelia stopped him. "Enough." Cecelia's voice was soft.Francis jerked his head up. For a moment, hope and joy flickered in his dead eyes, almost lighting him up from within. She spoke to him! She stopped him!Did this mean she was finally…finally willing to forgive him?"Celia!" His voice was hoarse, hands trembling as he tried to grab hers—only to pull back at the last moment, not daring to touch her."You're willing to forgive me, right? I knew it! I knew you still cared! I was wrong! I know I was wrong now! I was a fool! I was blind! I let you down! I let your dad down! I'm willing to do whatever you want, just don't leave me! I'll even give you my life! Please, Celia… come back to me…." Francis was rambling, sobbing uncontrollably. The once-proud, unshakable lawyer was now groveling at her feet like some desperate beggar.Cecelia looked down at him,

"I'll atone! I'll do it!" Rivera clung to his last hope as he sensed Cecelia's hesitation. "I'll make the person responsible pay!"The car finally stopped in front of the villa that they once called their marital home.Night had fallen. The house was bright with light, so bright it made Cecelia's eyes ache."Celia," Francis said, his voice tinged with desperate hope. He got out of the car and hurried around to open her door. "We're home." He put extra emphasis on the word home, as if walking inside could somehow erase the past. But Cecelia didn't move. She looked at the villa that had been both the stage for her brief happiness and the prison for her darkest despair."Come in, just for a minute?" Francis pleaded. At last, Cecelia got out of the car. She still had something important left inside. Her heels echoed on the cold marble steps, the sound echoing hollowly in the villa.Inside, everything had been thoroughly restored. The little green plant she liked was back in its p

Francis's heart shook, his eyes red. He picked up the pen and left the last stroke of ink on the marital settlement agreement.Almost desperately, he slid the papers across to Cecelia. She glanced down, her eyes scanning the terms. Every bit of real estate, every fund and stock, everything was transferred to her name. She didn't hesitate. She signed her name in one smooth motion. Quick, clean, and she didn't even glance at him."And the Divorce Agreement." Her voice was steady and cool, as if she were handling a matter that had nothing to do with her own life. That calmness made Francis's dead heart skip a beat. For a moment, a strange hope rushed through him.She accepted it! She accepted everything he gave!It was such a massive transfer of wealth… In his desperation, he took it as a sign she might be softening, a sign that she still had some pity for him. He seized on that faint hope as if it were the last thing keeping him afloat."Celia," his voice, tired and broken, was

After returning from that sunlit island, Francis felt like all the strength had been drained from his body. It was so bright that his eyes were hurting. Every one of Cecelia's smiles burned into his shattered heart. No, he couldn't let it end like this!He owed her an apology, an explanation. Even if the odds were a million to one, he needed to try. With trembling hands, he sent a message. He used the excuse of agreeing to the divorce to ask Cecelia to meet him with a lawyer for the division of assets. It was clumsy, selfish… But he had no other option.
