Chapter 1

Francis Rivera's voice was colder and more certain than Cecelia Moore had ever heard before.

"Yeah. During the car crash, Cecelia's father shielded her but died instantly, while she suffered serious injuries.

"It was fortunate that I altered the evidence and lied in court, thereby protecting Melody. Otherwise, her future as a celebrity would have been ruined by the drunk driving charge.

"The Moore family is down to just Cecelia. She's fully devoted to me. If I make her my wife and keep her under my nose, I can guarantee that she won't have her eyes on Melody anymore."

Someone hailed him and said, "Smart! That's really smart! But aren't you worried Cecelia might find out?"

Francis let out a low chuckle. "Her? She just needs to play her part as my wife and enjoy the easy life I give her. As for Melody… I can give her everything except the title of Mrs. Rivera. So, keep your mouth shut. Don't go running your mouth about this in front of Cecelia."

Each word felt like barbed wire, digging into Cecelia's body and ripping her apart. She almost blacked out and barely stayed upright by leaning against the icy wall.

The ultrasound report she held, which was once filled with happiness, was now crumpled in her trembling hands.

At her father's funeral, Francis had hugged her tight and said in a hoarse voice, "Celia, from now on, I'm your family."

When he proposed to her on one knee, fireworks lighting up the sky, he looked at her like she was his whole world. "Celia, I promise I'll make the driver who hurt your father pay. I'll win the case."

Late at night, he came home cold and tired, but always pulled her into his arms, resting his chin on her head. "Celia, I missed you. Only when I'm holding you do I feel alive again."

All that tenderness. All those promises. The vow that she was the only one in his life…

The place she thought was her sanctuary was actually the bastion that sheltered the murderer.

Suddenly, her phone vibrated in her pocket.

The screen flashed with the word "hubby". It was like a thorn in her eye.

Cecelia took a deep breath and rushed to the soundproof stairwell, her fingers shaking as she answered.

"Celia? Where are you? I just finished a call about an international acquisition. I'm swamped and won't be home for a few days as I need to prepare for the case. Remember to eat on time. Don't wait for me, okay?" Francis's voice was gentle and full of concern, just like always.

However, in the background, she could faintly hear the clinking of glasses.

Cecelia bit down hard on her lip. The taste of blood filled her mouth, but she forced herself to sound natural. "Okay… Sure."

"Good girl." Francis sounded a bit more relaxed.

"When this case is over, I'll take you to the auction. They finally have some news about that glazed pottery from the Renaissance era you've talked so often about. And don't forget, the nights are quite cool now. Your hands and feet get cold quickly, too. Remember to use the electric blanket. Don't catch a chill."

He was thoughtful, as always.

Then, she heard someone teasing in the background, "Hey, Fran! Checking in with your wife again? That's a model husband right there…"

Francis's voice turned stern. "Shut it. Celia's shy, so don't talk nonsense in front of her."

But when he spoke to her again, he slipped right back into his gentle tone. "Celia, go to bed early. Love you."

The line went dead, leaving only the empty sound of the dial tone.

The island wind always carried a salty, free scent. The swaying of the coconut trees could be seen outside the studio window. Sunlight streamed through the massive, tall windows, lighting up the workbench where every precision tool was arranged just so. The same tools that once gathered dust in the corner of a forgotten villa were now alive again under Cecelia's skilled hands. The studio walls were lined with awards and certificates belonging to her mentor and their team. This place wasn't just a refuge anymore. It was the anchor of her career, a harbor where dreams could finally set sail again.During a break, Cecelia's eyes landed on a photo frame on her desk. Inside was a picture of her and Jonathan at a sunset by the sea, standing side by side, their smiles warm and genuine. She picked up her phone and tapped out a brief message. "See you tonight."As dusk settled, Jonathan's car pulled up outside the studio."Want to stop somewhere first?" Jonathan asked, opening the car d

The investigation and trial finally came to an end.The chain of evidence Cecelia submitted was the only weapon she needed, cutting down every last hope Francis and Melody had of escaping justice."The court finds the defendant, Francis Rivera, guilty on multiple counts, including harboring a criminal, perjury, and abuse of power. The defendant is hereby sentenced to fifteen years of imprisonment.""The court further finds the defendant, Melody Green, guilty of vehicular manslaughter, endangering public safety, and intentional injury. The defendant is hereby sentenced to life imprisonment."Every word of the verdict echoed in the silent court, as if each word weighed a ton.Cecelia also finalized her divorce. She got exactly what she wanted, but there was no sense of triumph. There was only a heavy, almost numb exhaustion, like reaching the end of a long, empty journey.Francis was flanked by two armed bailiffs, and he was led out through a side door. The pale sunlight of fall

Cecelia's silence made Francis believe he hadn't punished Melody enough. He was about to kick her a few times again when Cecelia stopped him. "Enough." Cecelia's voice was soft.Francis jerked his head up. For a moment, hope and joy flickered in his dead eyes, almost lighting him up from within. She spoke to him! She stopped him!Did this mean she was finally…finally willing to forgive him?"Celia!" His voice was hoarse, hands trembling as he tried to grab hers—only to pull back at the last moment, not daring to touch her."You're willing to forgive me, right? I knew it! I knew you still cared! I was wrong! I know I was wrong now! I was a fool! I was blind! I let you down! I let your dad down! I'm willing to do whatever you want, just don't leave me! I'll even give you my life! Please, Celia… come back to me…." Francis was rambling, sobbing uncontrollably. The once-proud, unshakable lawyer was now groveling at her feet like some desperate beggar.Cecelia looked down at him,

"I'll atone! I'll do it!" Rivera clung to his last hope as he sensed Cecelia's hesitation. "I'll make the person responsible pay!"The car finally stopped in front of the villa that they once called their marital home.Night had fallen. The house was bright with light, so bright it made Cecelia's eyes ache."Celia," Francis said, his voice tinged with desperate hope. He got out of the car and hurried around to open her door. "We're home." He put extra emphasis on the word home, as if walking inside could somehow erase the past. But Cecelia didn't move. She looked at the villa that had been both the stage for her brief happiness and the prison for her darkest despair."Come in, just for a minute?" Francis pleaded. At last, Cecelia got out of the car. She still had something important left inside. Her heels echoed on the cold marble steps, the sound echoing hollowly in the villa.Inside, everything had been thoroughly restored. The little green plant she liked was back in its p

Francis's heart shook, his eyes red. He picked up the pen and left the last stroke of ink on the marital settlement agreement.Almost desperately, he slid the papers across to Cecelia. She glanced down, her eyes scanning the terms. Every bit of real estate, every fund and stock, everything was transferred to her name. She didn't hesitate. She signed her name in one smooth motion. Quick, clean, and she didn't even glance at him."And the Divorce Agreement." Her voice was steady and cool, as if she were handling a matter that had nothing to do with her own life. That calmness made Francis's dead heart skip a beat. For a moment, a strange hope rushed through him.She accepted it! She accepted everything he gave!It was such a massive transfer of wealth… In his desperation, he took it as a sign she might be softening, a sign that she still had some pity for him. He seized on that faint hope as if it were the last thing keeping him afloat."Celia," his voice, tired and broken, was

After returning from that sunlit island, Francis felt like all the strength had been drained from his body. It was so bright that his eyes were hurting. Every one of Cecelia's smiles burned into his shattered heart. No, he couldn't let it end like this!He owed her an apology, an explanation. Even if the odds were a million to one, he needed to try. With trembling hands, he sent a message. He used the excuse of agreeing to the divorce to ask Cecelia to meet him with a lawyer for the division of assets. It was clumsy, selfish… But he had no other option. The moment he pressed send, a huge wave of exhaustion hit him.The next day, Francis arrived two hours early. He sat by the window, at the same spot where he had confessed to Cecelia years ago. But his fingers couldn't stop nervously rubbing
