Chapter 2

Author: Nancy Hart
Noelle took one look at the message and said, "Get some rest, then. You can drink it later when you feel like it."

After setting the bowl down, she pecked my forehead. "Something came up at the office, and I need to handle it. I'll come back and keep you company later." With that, she turned and left.

I pushed through the pain and climbed out of the hospital bed. Then, I watched as our housekeeper handed another thermos flask to Noelle in the corridor.

Noelle walked down the corridor and stopped in front of another ward. As soon as she stepped inside, Evan reached out and pulled her into a hug. "Elle!"

Noelle and Evan weren't related by blood. Evan was born from his mother's previous marriage.

"You just had surgery; you're still very weak, so you shouldn't get out of bed!" Noelle immediately set the thermos flask down and helped Evan back into bed.

He sat down and watched as she unscrewed the lid. Then, he gasped, "How'd you know that mushroom soup's my favorite, Elle?"

Noelle smiled fondly. "I remember everything you like."

Evan embraced her and sighed contentedly. "I knew you loved me the most, Elle."

The way she gazed at him was deep and fervent. It was obvious she loved him. "Ev, if you aren't happy living at the Bloom residence, come home. I'll take care of you for the rest of your life."

As I leaned weakly against the wall, my heart twisted. I was such a fool to believe that her being gentle and considerate toward me meant she loved me. If she genuinely loved me, how could she not know I was allergic to mutton?

From the very beginning, the person she wanted to marry had always been Evan. I was just the one she settled for because she couldn't have him. I staggered back to my room and dumped the mutton soup into the trash.

During my stay in the hospital, Noelle stayed by my side and looked after me. She fed me, helped me get dressed, and worked on her laptop while I slept.

One afternoon, she wasn't in the ward. Her laptop was still on, sitting on the bed. There was a folder on the desktop labeled "My Love".

Driven by curiosity, I opened the file and found thousands of photos of Evan from every stage of his life. Several of them were candid shots taken from awkward angles, yet she clearly couldn't bring herself to delete them.

Right then, a new WhatsApp message popped up in the bottom right corner, so I clicked on it without much thought. It was from her assistant, Elaine. "I've gotten my hands on the Bahira emerald pinky ring you asked me to purchase for Mr. Lockwood, Ms. Lockwood."

Below it was a photo of the ring.

My fingers stiffened. Last week, I had seen this very ring in a magazine. I had fallen in love with it at first sight, but it had been incredibly difficult to acquire.

Noelle had told me she would buy it for me. However, a few days later, she'd given me an ordinary pinky ring instead, claiming that the Bahira emerald one had already been sold to someone else.

Noelle: "Bring the ring to the hospital. By the way, Ev likes the crepe from that shop on the west side of the city. Buy the shop right now. From now on, they'll make crepes exclusively for Ev."

I scrolled up through the chat history and realized that Evan had every gift Noelle had ever given me. Yet, there were things Evan had that I did not.

In an instant, it felt as though my heart was being forcefully torn in two. I had thought she loved me, but compared to Evan, I was nothing but a joke. Since she didn't love me, I'd remove myself from the picture and fulfill her wish.

I pulled my phone out and made a call. "Mr. Pearson, help me draft a divorce agreement…"

Before I could finish, Noelle walked in and looked at me uneasily. "Who's getting a divorce?"

I put my phone away and responded apathetically, "It's just a friend of mine."

She let out a breath of relief. Pulling me into a warm embrace, she commented softly, "You've lost so much weight after staying in the hospital for the past few days. It breaks my heart to see you in this state."

For a moment, I genuinely wanted to ask if she ever grew tired of putting on an act, but in the end, I kept my mouth shut. It didn't matter; I was leaving soon anyway.

The following day, Evan came to my ward. He looked young and put together, which made me seem even paler and more emaciated.

I had studied business management, but Noelle wanted to focus on her career. She asked me to quit my job and stay home so that she wouldn't have anything to worry about.

And that's what I did. I became a stay-at-home husband. Yet, she arranged for Evan to work at Lockwood Group and even transferred shares to him.

Evan sneered, "Well, how does it feel lying in a hospital bed, Dominic? It isn't very pleasant, is it? Oh, but what can you do when I'm the one she loves most?

"For my sake, she'd sacrifice you without a hint of hesitation, let alone extract your bone marrow. You're nothing more than a tool to warm her bed!"

I was utterly shocked. So he knew that Noelle had taken my bone marrow to save him.

He flashed me a psychopathic smile. "Dominic, to tell you the truth, your car accident was no accident at all. I just couldn't stand the sight of you, so I intentionally found someone to run you over!"

Evelyn nodded, and just as she was about to order her bodyguards to take action, I spat out, "I told you, I'm not donating my bone marrow to Evan!"Evan shot daggers at me. "Unfortunately for you, you don't get a say in this, Dominic. If I want something from you, you have to give it to me!""Last time, you arranged for someone to hit me with a car so I'd fall unconscious. That's how you got my bone marrow. This time, I won't let you have your way with me!"Holding my gaze, he shamelessly asked, "So what if I hired someone to run you over? Listen here, whether you like it or not, you're giving me your bone marrow today!"I raised my phone. "I've recorded our conversation and sent it to my lawyer. I'll pursue the matter of the car accident to the very end. I assure you that you won't get away with this! Also, it's illegal to force someone to donate their bone marrow. Go on, I dare you to lay a finger on me!"Evan was beside himself with rage. "Hurry up and snatch his phone, Mom. He

I was about to hop into my car when someone reached out and stopped me. Looking at me, Rosalie said, "I've divorced Evan, Dominic."I turned around and met her gaze coldly. "So what if you've divorced Evan? What does that have to do with me?"Rosalie seemed conflicted. "What if I told you I regret breaking up with you? Had we stayed together, Noelle would never have entered the picture, and you wouldn't have been hurt so badly."I genuinely wanted to roll my eyes, but I refrained because I looked far too gentlemanly tonight. "Well, your regret isn't worth shit to me. I don't run a recycling center, so you and Noelle can both stay the hell away from me!"Rosalie stiffened. Paying her no mind, I climbed into my car and sped away.To make things easier, I stayed at a hotel this time. I had just returned to my room and changed out of my bespoke suit when the doorbell rang. Assuming it was housekeeping, I opened the door. The moment I did, I found Noelle at my doorstep. Her face was b

Evan didn't think so. He thought it was only natural and right for me to donate my bone marrow to him, so he didn't see it as a life-saving favor. He continued to throw tantrums at the office every day, causing quite a scene, until Noelle fired him and reclaimed the shares she had given him. My former colleagues were the ones who told me all of this. …A week later, at the invitation of a business partner, I returned to Port Azure to attend a corporate gala. I didn't expect to run into Noelle at the venue. With tears in her eyes, she said, "You're finally back, Dom. I've been waiting for you!"Before making the trip, I'd already considered the possibility of running into her, but I couldn't skip the gala just because I wanted to avoid her. "Were you waiting for me to come back so we can discuss our divorce?"Noelle shook her head and said, "I don't want a divorce. From the moment I chose to marry you, divorce was never an option. You'll always be my better half!"Looking at h

Noelle paid no mind to Evan's temper tantrums. She was about to leave when her phone rang. Assuming it was me, she happily picked up. "Dom!""Ms. Lockwood, I'm the doctor who performed your abortion. Mr. Greene came to see me today and asked me a few questions. I think he knows that you terminated your pregnancy on purpose."Noelle stiffened. "No wonder he wants a divorce. He knows everything…" she murmured to herself. Then, she hung up on the doctor and turned to Elaine. "Dispatch our men to find Dom immediately. I don't care what you have to do to make it happen. Just find him and bring him back to me!"The video ended there. All of a sudden, I found myself reminiscing about things from a long time ago. Noelle and I had essentially grown up together. She was always cold and reserved, yet she would do anything Evan asked. At the time, I thought she was simply a sister who doted on her younger brother. Later on, out of nowhere, she started pursuing me, as though she wanted t

Noelle stared at the agreement in disbelief. Her pupils contracted, as if she couldn't accept the fact that I wanted a divorce."Where is he?" Elaine shook her head. "The divorce agreement was delivered to our company by his lawyer. I didn't see Mr. Greene. The hospital also confirmed that he has been discharged, but no one knows where he went."Noelle took out her phone and called me. I didn't answer. In fact, I blocked her and boarded the plane without a backward glance. I said inwardly, "Noelle, you'll never see me again. From this moment on, we're done."…The plane touched down in Solmere. When I walked out, I was greeted by my parents. Having not seen them in ages, I couldn't help but choke out, "Dad, Mom!"Mom stepped forward and pulled me into a warm embrace. "It's good to have you back."My parents had immigrated to Solmere many moons ago. After breaking up with Rosalie, I had originally intended to join my parents here, but, for Noelle's sake, I ultimately chose to

In a heartbeat, I was consumed with rage. So, I raised my hand to strike him. However, before I could land a hit, Noelle rushed in and caught my wrist in midair. Eyeing me coldly, she snapped, "Have you lost your mind, Dominic?"Evan wept. "Elle, I heard Dominic was injured in a car accident, so I came to see him and keep him company."He wiped his tears, looking as if he was utterly pitiful. "But the moment I walked in, he started hitting me and yelling at me… Maybe he's just in a bad mood because he's hurt."Noelle flung my hand away, causing me to stumble backward. Pain shot through me as my waist hit the corner of a table.Noelle's attention was entirely on Evan. So, she didn't even notice I'd been hurt. "Ev just had a bone marrow transplant, Dominic. He's still very weak. If anything, he came to see you out of the goodness of his heart. How could you lay a hand on him? "I know you've been in a bad mood these past few days because of my miscarriage and your car accident, but
