THE FALL OUT

"No, I can't let you do that," Mrs. Ruiz said, her voice breaking as she spoke. "I can't bear the thought of what might happen if you do."

Althea looked up at her mother, her eyes pleading. "Please," she said, her voice choked with emotion. "I need to do this. It's the only way."

"Your wedding day was supposed to be a time of happiness and celebration," Mrs. Ruiz said, her voice breaking with emotion. "You were supposed to be radiant and joyful, not kneeling on the floor, crying and pleading with me to let you make a dangerous call. I wanted to see you on your wedding day, asking for my blessing and my love, not my permission to put yourself in harm's way."

"Just let me do this," Althea pleaded, the phone trembling in her hand. "I can make things right."

There was a long moment of silence, and then Mrs. Ruiz spoke. "I'm sorry, Althea," she said, her voice heavy with sorrow. "I can't let you do this. It's too dangerous."
