Chapter 12: Before Morning

Kae was already moving before Karl finished the sentence.

That was the thing about him I had spent six years misreading as aggression. It wasn't aggression. It was the absence of the pause that most people needed between receiving information and deciding what to do with it.

Chapter 12: Before MorningLucian's PovKae was already moving before Karl finished the sentence. That was the thing about him I had spent six years misreading as aggression. It wasn't aggression. It was the absence of the pause that most people needed between receiving information and deciding what to do with it. Kae processed and moved in the same motion and the speed of it looked like anger from the outside but from this close it looked like something else entirely.I watched him pull his jacket on and check his phone and start running through what we had in a voice that was low and even and completely controlled. My mouth still felt like his. But I focused."We can't walk into that building tonight," I said. "Scrolsal named him on a live feed, the moment we're seen together it confirms the accusation.""I know that." He didn't stop moving. "We're not walking in together.""Then how…""You're not walking in at all." He looked at me. "Not tonight. Your burn order is still active an

  • Forbidden Affectionate    Controlled Burn

Chapter 11: Controlled BurnScrolsal's PovI have been managing difficult rooms for thirty one years and the skill it requires is not intelligence, though that helps, and it is not authority, though that is useful. It is the ability to identify the moment a situation stops being manageable and to move before that moment arrives.Tonight had stopped being manageable approximately four hours ago.I stood at the podium in the Halcyon lobby and delivered the statement Dorian had written for me and I delivered it well.Because I delivered everything well and because the alternative was to stand in front of every camera in the Northern Territory and explain my presence on a recording that Elara was apparently now carrying.I had not known about the recording until forty minutes ago.Dorian had called me from somewhere in the building with the specific calm of a man who had been several steps ahead of this evening from the beginning and found the experience privately enjoyable. He told me El

  • Forbidden Affectionate    The Name

Chapter 10: The NameKae's PovThe name Elara gave me was one I had not expected and one I could not dismiss.Marcus Orell. Pack administrator, eastern territory, eleven years in his position, the man who had processed every territorial document my father ever signed and every one I had signed after him.I stood in that parking structure and held that name in my head and felt the architecture of the last eleven years rearrange itself into something uglier and more patient than anything I had built.Elara gave me the recording and the documentation and then she looked at me in the way she had been looking at me all night, like she was waiting to see which direction I fell, and I did not fall in any direction because I do not do that in front of people."We're done here," I said. She nodded once and walked away and did not look back and I thought that was probably the most honest thing she had done all night.Karl drove us back to the safe house in silence and the silence was the kind t

Chapter 9: ArchitectElara's PovThe location I sent was a parking structure on Venn Street, level two, northeast corner, because it had no cameras and two exits and I had used it three times before tonight without anyone finding me here.I arrived forty minutes early because I always arrive forty minutes early and I stood in the dark and waited and thought about the look on Kae Armstrong's face when he read Ren Cole's name.I had expected anger. What I had not expected was the stillness, the specific quality of it, like a man absorbing something he had already suspected and was finally being given permission to know. It was like the kind of stillness was worse than anger because it meant the decision was already made and everything after it was just execution.Kae Armstrong executing a decision was not something I wanted pointed at me. But here we were.I heard the car before I saw it, Karl's vehicle coming in from the south entrance, and then three doors and three sets of footstep

  • Forbidden Affectionate    Walls

Chapter 8: WallsKae's PovThe safe house smelled like nobody had been here in weeks, which I preferred because it meant nobody had.Karl went out for food ten minutes after we arrived and the door closed behind him and then it was just me and Lucian and a room that was suddenly much smaller than its square footage suggested.I sat on the edge of the table and looked at the envelope and thought about Ren Cole's name on that page and four years of handing him things I had never handed to anyone else.Lucian moved to the window and stood there with his back to me, looking at the street below, jacket gone, sleeves pushed up, and I noticed that the way I had been noticing everything about him tonight which was too much and too specifically."The message," I said. "The one from the unknown number. You have a theory.""Elara sent it." He didn't turn around. "She wanted to know if I had told you about the file before she showed herself.""And if you hadn't?""Then she would have used it diff

  • Forbidden Affectionate    Dorian

Chapter 7: DorianLucian's PovThe name on my screen was one I had not expected to see tonight.Dorian Vael was calling me at two in the morning from a number I had never saved, which meant he had mine and had been holding it for a reason, and the reason had just arrived.I looked at Kae and he looked at the screen and something shifted in his expression, quick and controlled, but I caught it."You know that name?" I asked."Junior Alpha, smaller territory in the western corridor." He kept his voice flat, but his jaw was tight. "Nobody significant.""He had someone follow us from the building tonight."Kae looked at me then, and the corridor was narrow and we were close and the space between us had been doing something all night that neither of us had named yet."Answer it," he said. So I did."Lucian." Dorian's voice was the kind of smooth that takes practice, the kind you develop when you learn early that people respond better to calm than to pressure. "I heard about your evening."
