LOGINAUTUMN'S POV
He stared at me with a poker face and before I blink he pulled out a gun placing it between my eyes. Cold sweat broke out on my back and for some reason I couldn't find my voice.
My mother let out a small scream holding the arm of Mateo, her husband while I tried my best not to piss myself right there. Why was he so calm? I had a gun pointed at my head.
"Put the gun down Dante, " Mateo muttered, his voice dripping with boredom. The man who I finally knew as Dante stared at me then at them.
"Who are you?" His voice came out harsh, I stared at him with frightened eyes, unable to form a word.
"Put the gun down," his father spoke again, his face showing signs of anger.
“I saw her at Rosa’s restaurant. Why is she here again?” He asked, pressing the gun on my head. The cold metal made contact with my skin and I bit my lips, shaking like a dry leaf.
"Because she's my daughter," my mother finally said. The tension thickened and he turned to her with a scowl. “Why am I just finding out about this?" He asked if the gun was still aimed at me.
I could barely hear myself think over my racing heart. I was going to die and all because I paid my mother a visit.
"Put the gun down and we can talk like normal people." His father muttered.
Dante gave me a glare and a chill ran down my spine. I had definitely fucked with the wrong person. He took the gun down cursing in Italian as he made his way to a seat opposite me.
“Next time, inform me. I won't make the mistake of asking questions” he spoke, glancing at me and I swallowed the lump in my throat visibly shaking up.
A maid came in with an extra plate and we resumed eating like nothing had happened. The room's tension was so thick it could be cut with a butter knife.
"So Mabel here tells me that you just graduated?" Mateo asked, trying to clear the foggy atmosphere. I nodded trying to stop small tremors. I glanced at Dante but he seemed immersed in whatever was on his phone screen barely touching his food.
I tried to pick up my wine glass and he turned to me. The glass went crashing to the floor and I stood up, my face frozen in fear. I felt eyes on me and I looked up to find them all watching me. "Honey, are you okay?
I nodded my head trying to compose myself. "I'm okay. Can I find the bathroom?" I asked and my mother placed her napkin on the table walking towards me.
"Come I'll show you," she held my hand taking me away. "you fucker," Mateo growled probably at .
We stepped into the bathroom and my mother handed toilet paper. I tried to clean the wine off. My movements became more rigid and tears threatened to spill.
"Autumn," my mother called but I could barely hear her, trying to scrub the stain off.
"Autumn,” she yelled, holding my hand and I looked up to meet her gaze. What kind of man are you married to," my voice came out hoarse and it hurt to talk with the large lump in my throat.
My mother's blue eyes filled with guilt and she looked away. "It's complicated."
"Complicated? He's son brought out a fucking gunin thw middle of a family dinner,” i yelled slowly fgoing into a panic attack, negative thoughts filling my head.
What if he had pulled the trigger?
Was it loaded?
"Calm down and do not curse," she muttered. Her voice was calm as always but I got the warning. I rolled my eyes, losing any shred of patience.
"You have two minutes to tell me why your step son has a gun or I'm going to call the police. She stared at me in shock but I wasn't going to back down.
"You can't call the police. Fortunately they have no say in what goes on in the family,"
My brows knitted and I watched her. What do you mean by family? I asked in disbelief. "you got married into the mafia??"
"It's not as bad as it seems in Autumn , I promise you. Mateo is really sweet and he treats me well," she tried to explain while I stared at her like she had just grown an extra head.
"Please do this for me okay. I'm not asking for anything else except this." Tears filled her eyes and I took a deep breath looking away.
“Give me a moment,” My words took her by surprise and she tried to come closer but I took a step back. Taking the hint, she let out a sigh running a hand through her blonde hair.
"I'll be waiting outside." Not trusting myself to speak, I stared at my feet until the door closed. I wiped the tears that threatened to spill trying to get myself together.
"It's okay Autumn. You won't have to see any of them after this. You can go back to Los Angeles and live like nothing ever happened," after practicing a few breathing exercises I walked out with a small smile.
My mother parted her lips to say something but I didn't spare her a glance walking away.
Mat stared at me with a ghost of a smile and we resumed eating. "What are your plans after school?" He asked
"Nothing serious. I plan on finding a job in Los Angeles when I get back.”
"Get that idea out of your head," said and we all turned to him. My buried anger rose to the surface. "I'm sorry. What did you say?" I asked, my fake smile not wavering.
"You're not deaf are you. Your mother married into the family. You move here," he said, scrolling through his phone.
I slammed my hands on the table staring at me. "I don't know who you are in your little mafia gang but you do not tell me what to do."
"Autumn my mother whispered trying to get attention but my eye never left Jim.
He stared back at me and to my surprise his lips stretched into a sinister smirk. "You move your things here tomorrow. No questions asked.”
He rose from his seat picking up his gun.
AutumnI found my way back to the building, and I held the doorknob of the other door, wanting to open it and sneak in, and it wasn’t even the back door.In my quest to get out and find Dante, I had found that door, which fortunately, was unlocked, and I had sneaked out through the door. The good path was that the door led me through a straight aisle that led to the bedroom I had been given, and I couldn’t be more relieved that I found the door. My intention had been to tell Dante about the door so that he would have an easier means to get to me, but because of the conversation we were having, I totally forgot. I was also supposed to remind him about finding out why we couldn’t call each other, but I forgot that as well.“He has a way of making me forget what I want to say to him,” I grumbled as I turned the doorknob, but to my utmost shock, it was locked. My mouth fell open with shock.I tried to turn the knob over and over again, but it wasn’t yielding, and I realized that it had b
DanteAfter I got over the shock of what Autumn just told me, I became deeply curious, as my first thought was that she had eventually agreed to take the money from Dare-Devil.“How?” I asked curiously.Autumn cleared her throat.“A friend of mine is going to send us a little amount of money that can get us out of here,” she answered. My heart fell into my stomach in disappointment, but I decided not to write that off completely.“What friend? Susan?” I asked Autumn. And I would be very disappointed if Autumn was that friend. Besides, Autumn didn’t have any other friend that I knew about aside from Susan.I would be disappointed because two nights ago, I did talk to Susan to help me speak to Autumn to convince her. It was easy to get Autumn to change her mind through Susan because that was the only person I believed Autumn listened to.“No, it’s not Susan,” Autumn answered, looking away slightly.“Then it’s who?” I asked.I was getting a little upset and suspicious, but I wanted to be
DanteI was woken up even earlier and with a harsher tone than usual.“It’s time to start your duty for the day,” I had been told.I didn’t think I was going to sleep well last night, but I ended up sleeping really well, and that was because I was tired as hell. I did have some terrible dreams about the company, something about it being raided and David wasn’t able to do anything, but even when I woke up, I didn’t do anything about it because I knew that the dream was as a reaction of the news I got.I started working as I should, and I tried to block out any form of thought that would make me distracted, or think about the decision I made.I didn’t want to regret anything. And besides, it was already too late to do so.Romiro’s guard watched me to ensure that I didn’t stop for a minute to rest or try to give the job to someone else, but I also paid him no mind. I did the task with all the rage and bitterness inside of me.“Did you make a sound?” He asked me.I knew that he was speaki
AutumnI waited for Dante last night…all through the night as a matter of fact, but he never showed up.“Is he upset with me?” I kept asking myself.Staying stuck in this room just made me really upset, and confused, and restless. I tried to sleep, but even that wasn’t working. Then, at some point, I changed my thought.“Has something happened to him?” I began to ask myself. From the conversation I heard from Romiro, he didn’t have good plans towards Dante. He might have even wanted him dead, and yet, I took that information for granted. What if something terrible had happened to Dante already? My restlessness increased so much that I couldn’t sleep.Again, I did try to call Dante, but it didn’t connect…several times.“Why can I call other people but not him?” I asked myself worriedly. It was morning, but I still wasn’t feeling any better. Someone else brought breakfast, but I couldn’t bring myself to eat anything. I would have asked after Bianca, but I already knew that they were t
DanteBy the end of that day, I was already exhausted, and I thought I was going to collapse from it. When food was eventually given to me, I ate like a starved animal.I had to take Romiro’s offer and submit myself to be his slave for as long as I lived; there was no getting out of here. After eating, I realized that I wasn’t half-full. Never in my entire existence had I ever had to go through such labor. After accepting and Romiro paid off the cabbie, he tripled my task, making me work like a donkey in a couple of hours. Worse, he ensured that I was being supervised, so there was no way I wouldn’t do the job.“Here, you don’t use someone else to get the job done because you don’t want to do it. This is not your comfort and luxury where you are in control of things, De Luca,” Romiro’s worker had told me.There were blisters on my palms, but more than that, there was pain and fury in my heart for how everything had turned out.I was in a deeper mess than I ever thought I would be.W
DanteThings became worse when the cabbie returned that same day to ask for his money, literally causing a scene because he thought that I would have paid him off already.“I am involving the police if I don’t get the money right now!” He roared threateningly. “Here, owing is a crime and you could go to jail for it,” he added.Nothing I did to pacify him worked, and soon, Romiro’s attention was drawn to it.“I see that you have decided to make yourself a debtor to everyone,” Romiro mocked. “I am not sure you were warned, but I don’t tolerate such scandals in my estate, so you either give him the money or you leave with him, but bear in mind that the moment you step out of my estate gate with him, you are going to jail,” Romiro added. There was a tone of warning in his words, and coupled with the cabbie’s angry threats, I knew that it wasn’t just throwing words around.I was ready to leave Romiro’s estate penniless and aimless if push came to shoves, but ending in jail wasn’t part of t
