My heart hammered. "Fine, Dad. Just getting ready for bed."

His footsteps retreated down the hall. I heard his bedroom door close. Heard the springs of his mattress creak as he settled in.

I went to the window. Kyle was already on the ground, looking up at me. Even in the darkness, I could see the longing in his expression. The separation felt like tearing off skin, raw and painful.
