Chapter 5: Storm breaking

The footsteps on the stairs were fast and furious.

Emma’s heart slammed against her ribs as she yanked the sheet higher, clutching it to her chest. Jake was already moving snatching his discarded boxer briefs from the floor and pulling them on in one fluid motion. He shot her a quick, steady look that said stay calm, but the tension in his shoulders betrayed him.

“Jake!” Mia’s voice cracked like a whip outside the door. “Open this door right now!”

He exhaled sharply, raked a hand through his hair, and crossed the room. Emma scrambled for something anything to cover herself with, finally grabbing Jake’s T-shirt from the floor and tugging it over her head just as the door flew open.

Mia stood in the threshold, phone still in hand, eyes wide and glassy with a mix of shock, hurt, and fury. Connor hovered awkwardly behind her in the hallway, looking like he’d rather be anywhere else.

“What the hell is this?” Mia demanded, holding up the photo she’d sent. The image was damning, Emma’s bare back, Jake’s arm slung possessively across her waist, both of them tangled in his sheets.

Jake lifted both hands, palms out. “Mia, let’s talk about this downstairs”

“Downstairs?” She laughed, high and brittle. “No. I want to hear it from both of you. Right now. My best friend and my brother?” Her gaze snapped to Emma, who was curled against the headboard in Jake’s oversized shirt, cheeks burning. “How long has this been going on?”

Emma’s throat closed. “It just happened. Tonight was the first”

“Bullshit.” Mia’s eyes filled with tears. “I’ve seen the way you look at him, Em. For years. And you” she whirled on Jake “you knew exactly how she felt and you still” Her voice broke. “You don’t do relationships, Jake. You use girls and discard them. She’s not one of them. She’s family.”

Jake flinched like she’d slapped him. “I know.”

“Do you?” Mia stepped closer, voice trembling. “Because the second you get bored, you’ll break her heart, and then I lose both of you.”

The words hung heavy in the air. Emma felt them like a punch to the gut. She’d thought the same thing a hundred times, but hearing it out loud from Mia, of all people made it real.

Jake’s jaw tightened. “That’s not going to happen.”

Mia scoffed. “You don’t get to promise that. You’ve never stuck around longer than a month.”

He took a step toward her, voice low and fierce. “This is different.”

“Is it?” Mia’s eyes searched his face, desperate for proof. “Or is it just new and shiny because it’s forbidden?”

Silence stretched, thick and suffocating.

Emma couldn’t take it anymore. She slid out of bed, Jake’s shirt falling to mid-thigh, and moved to Mia’s side. “I’m sorry,” she said softly. “I should’ve told you. We both should have. But it wasn’t planned. It just happened. And it’s not just sex.” She glanced at Jake, heart in her throat. “At least, I hope it’s not.”

Jake’s eyes met hers storm-gray and raw. “It’s not,” he said quietly. Firmly. “I meant what I said earlier. I want to try. For real.”

Mia looked between them, anger fracturing into something sadder. “I need air.” She turned abruptly, pushing past Connor and thundering down the stairs.

Connor gave them an apologetic shrug and followed her.

The door slammed again downstairs.

Jake exhaled slowly, tension radiating off him. He crossed to Emma, cupping her face gently. “You okay?”

She shook her head. “Not even a little.”

He pressed his forehead to hers. “I’ll fix this.”

“How?”

“I don’t know yet.” He kissed her softly, lingering. “But I will.”

They dressed in silence, Emma borrowing sweatpants from his drawer, Jake pulling on jeans and a hoodie. Downstairs, the living room light was on. Mia sat on the couch, knees pulled to her chest, staring out at the dark lake. Connor was nowhere in sight, he’d apparently made himself scarce.

Jake sat on the coffee table facing her. Emma hovered in the doorway, unsure.

“I’m not going to pretend I’ve been a saint,” Jake started, voice steady. “I’ve fucked around. A lot. Never let anyone close because it was easier that way. But Emma” He glanced back at her, eyes softening. “She’s been there my whole life. I didn’t see it, didn’t let myself see it until this summer. And now that I do, I can’t unsee it.”

Mia’s lips trembled. “You’ll hurt her.”

“Maybe,” he admitted, and Emma’s chest ached at the honesty. “But I’ll hurt worse if I walk away now. I’m not asking you to be okay with this tonight. I’m asking you to give me a chance to prove I can be more than the asshole you’re used to.”

Mia looked at Emma. “And you? You’re okay risking our friendship on him?”

Emma crossed the room, sitting beside her. “I’m terrified,” she admitted. “But I’ve been in love with him for years, Mia. Quietly. Stupidly. And tonight, for the first time, it felt like he might feel something back. I have to know if it’s real.”

Mia was quiet for a long time. Then she sighed, wiping her eyes. “If you break her heart, Jake, I will end you. Slowly.”

He nodded. “Understood.”

She stood, hugging Emma tightly. “I’m not ready to be happy about this. But I love you both too much to lose either of you.” She pulled back, managing a watery smile. “Just maybe lock the damn door next time.”

Emma laughed, the sound half-sob. “Deal.”

Mia left for her room, closing the door softly behind her.

Jake pulled Emma into his lap on the couch, wrapping his arms around her like he was afraid she’d vanish. “That could’ve gone worse.”

“She’ll come around,” Emma said, though her voice wavered.

He kissed her temple. “We’ll give her time.”

They sat like that for a while, the earlier fight draining the urgency from their bodies, leaving only quiet closeness. Eventually, he carried her back upstairs not to his room, but to hers, laying her gently on the guest bed.

“Sleep,” he murmured, brushing hair from her face. “I’ll be right down the hall if you need me.”

She caught his wrist. “Stay.”

He hesitated, then nodded, sliding in behind her, pulling her back against his chest. They fell asleep tangled together, fully clothed, heartbeat to heartbeat.

Morning brought fragile peace.

Mia was civil over coffee quiet, but not cold. Connor had left early with apologies. The three of them moved around each other carefully, like new roommates learning boundaries.

By afternoon, Mia announced she was spending the night at a friend’s. “Need a little space,” she said, hugging Emma again. “But I’m okay. Really.”

The door closed behind her, and the house settled into stillness.

Jake found Emma on the balcony, staring at the lake. He didn’t speak just wrapped his arms around her from behind, chin resting on her head.

“We’re okay,” he said quietly.

She leaned back into him. “Are we?”

He turned her gently, eyes serious. “I’m not going anywhere, Em. Not this time.”

Heat flared between them slow-building, inevitable. He kissed her deeply, hands sliding under her shirt, reacquainting themselves with bare skin. She tugged at his clothes, needing him closer, needing proof.

They didn’t make it upstairs.

He lifted her onto the wide balcony table, shoving her shorts down, mouth hot on her neck as he freed himself. One thrust and he was inside her bare this time, both of them too desperate for barriers. She gasped at the feel of him, skin on skin, nothing between them.

“Fuck, Emma,” he groaned, moving slow and deep, eyes locked on hers. “You feel”

She silenced him with a kiss, legs locking around his waist, meeting every thrust. It was slower than last night, more deliberate less frenzy, more claiming. He whispered her name like a prayer, thumb circling her clit until she came apart around him, pulling him over the edge with her.

They stayed joined, breathing hard, foreheads pressed together.

“I love you,” he said against her lips, voice rough with truth. “Have for longer than I knew.”

Tears pricked her eyes. “I love you too.”

He smiled real, unguarded, the kind she’d rarely seen. “Good. Because you’re stuck with me now.”

They cleaned up laughing softly, stealing kisses, hands unable to stop touching.

Later, curled on the couch watching the sunset over the lake, Emma’s phone buzzed.

A text from an unknown number, same one Jake had used before.

But this time, it wasn’t from him.

The message was a photo, Jake and her on the balcony table an hour ago, taken from the tree line across the property. Intimate. Unmistakable.

Below it, a single line

Cute. But how long before he gets bored again?

Tell him Kayla says hi.

Emma’s blood turned to ice.

Jake glanced over, smile fading as he saw her face. “What is it?”

She turned the phone toward him.

His expression went thunder-dark.

Because Kayla the blonde from the party wasn’t just a random hookup.

She was the one who’d been texting him all summer, refusing to accept it was over.

And now she was watching.

The phone buzzed again.

  • Forbidden Summer Sins   Chapter 17: The truth that bleeds

The hospital room felt smaller in the gray dawn light, walls closing in as Emma sat beside Jake’s bed. The Polaroid and Ray’s note lay on the tray table like evidence in a trial neither of them wanted. Jake hadn’t spoken since the audio played, Ray’s voice confessing he’d smothered Jake’s mother while Jake hid in the closet, believing it was just a fall.Jake stared at the ceiling, jaw tight, good hand clenched in the sheet. The bandage on his shoulder was fresh, but the pain in his eyes was older, fourteen years deep.Emma hadn’t slept. She’d spent the night replaying the recording, searching for lies, for anything that would spare him this guilt. She found nothing.“Jake,” she whispered. He didn’t look at her.She reached for his hand. He flinched, barely but it cut her deeper than any knife.“I need you to talk to me,” she said. “Please.”His voice came out rough. “What’s left to say? Ray killed her. I watched. And I let him cover it up.”“You were twelve. Traumatized. Your father

  • Forbidden Summer Sins   Chapter 16: The weight of silence

Rain lashed the hospital windows in angry sheets. Inside the private room, the only sounds were the steady beep of Jake’s monitor and the soft rustle of Emma turning the Polaroid over in her hands. The image of twelve-year-old Jake, blood-smeared, terrified stared back at her like a ghost that refused to stay buried.Jake hadn’t spoken since she showed him the photo. He lay propped against the pillows, shoulder heavily bandaged, eyes fixed on the ceiling. The pain medication made his movements sluggish, but the tension in his jaw told her he was wide awake.Emma set the photo on the side table, face down. “Jake.”He didn’t answer. She climbed carefully onto the bed beside him, avoiding the IV line. “You don’t have to tell me everything tonight. But you do have to tell me something.”His throat worked. “What do you want to know?”“Everything you can give me.” She rested her hand on his uninjured chest, feeling the rapid thud of his heart. “Start with the night she died.”He exhaled sha

The Polaroid lay on the hospital floor like a dropped accusation. Emma stared at it young Jake, twelve years old, blood on his small hands, eyes wide with shock. Behind him, a woman on the floor, dark hair fanned out, lifeless. The note in red ink burned into her mind: He was there. He watched her bleed out. Ask him why he never called 911.Jake’s breathing changed slow, shallow. He’d woken fully now, eyes locked on the photo she hadn’t yet picked up.“Em…” His voice cracked. “Where did that come from?”She knelt, fingers trembling as she lifted the picture. “Slipped under the door. While we were sleeping.”He reached for it with his good hand. She hesitated, then placed it in his palm. His face drained of color. The monitor beeped faster, heart rate climbing.“I haven’t seen this in fourteen years,” he whispered.Emma sat on the bed’s edge, careful of the IV. “Tell me.”He closed his eyes. “I was twelve. Mom and Dad fought all the time. That night… she said she was leaving. Packed a

The ambulance ride blurred into sterile white lights and beeping monitors. Jake’s hand stayed locked in Emma’s, his grip weakening as paramedics worked on the gunshot wound, clean through-and-through, high on the shoulder, no major arteries hit. Still, blood soaked the gurney sheets, and his face was ashen.Emma whispered reassurances, thumb stroking his knuckles. “You’re going to be okay.”He managed a weak smile. “Told you I’d take a bullet for you.”She laughed through tears. “Don’t make it a habit.”At the hospital, small regional ER two towns over, doctors rushed him into surgery. Emma and Mia waited in the fluorescent-lit hallway, plastic chairs hard against their backs. Vanessa had followed in her own car, now sitting across from them, coat folded neatly in her lap.Mia broke the silence first. “Why didn’t you tell us sooner? About Ray?”Vanessa exhaled slowly. “I didn’t know how deep it went until Kayla started texting me, bragging. She thought I’d celebrate. Instead, I starte

The rifle in Jake’s hands didn’t waver, but his voice cracked like thin ice.“Uncle Ray?”The older man stepped fully into the moonlight, gray hair catching silver, Harlan family jacket zipped against the cold. The gun in his hand, a sleek pistol remained steady, pointed at Jake’s chest. Connor stood beside him, smirking, hands in pockets like he was attending a barbecue.“Easy, nephew,” Ray said, voice low and calm. “No need for dramatics. We’re family.”Jake’s knuckles whitened on the rifle. “Family doesn’t break into cabins with guns.”Ray’s eyes flicked to the open door, where Emma and Mia stood frozen in the threshold. Vanessa had slipped back inside, pistol drawn but lowered, watching the scene with guarded eyes.“Inside,” Ray ordered. “All of you. We talk like civilized people.”Jake didn’t budge. “You posted Kayla’s bail. You fed her information. Why?”Ray sighed, as if disappointed. “Because someone had to clean up your mess. You’ve been running from responsibility since your

The headlights sliced through the dark pines like knives, slow and deliberate. Emma’s breath caught as the vehicle, a black SUV rolled to a stop at the cabin’s edge, engine idling low. No markings. No lights except the beams.Jake was already moving, rifle raised, body angled to shield her and Mia. “Stay inside,” he hissed. “Lock the door behind me.”Mia grabbed Emma’s arm. “He can’t go alone.”But Jake was out before they could argue, door clicking shut. Emma watched through the window, heart slamming. He approached the SUV with measured steps, gun steady. The driver’s window lowered.A woman’s voice smooth, familiar drifted through the night.“Easy, Jake. It’s just me.”Vanessa.She stepped out slowly, hands visible. Same long dark hair, same sharp cheekbones Emma remembered from prom photos. Older now, mid-twenties but still devastatingly beautiful in a fitted black coat.Jake didn’t lower the rifle. “What the hell are you doing here?”Vanessa’s eyes flicked to the cabin windows. “
