Chapter 5: Storm breaking

last update Last Updated: 2026-01-19 12:26:59

The footsteps on the stairs were fast and furious.

Emma’s heart slammed against her ribs as she yanked the sheet higher, clutching it to her chest. Jake was already moving snatching his discarded boxer briefs from the floor and pulling them on in one fluid motion. He shot her a quick, steady look that said stay calm, but the tension in his shoulders betrayed him.

“Jake!” Mia’s voice cracked like a whip outside the door. “Open this door right now!”

He exhaled sharply, raked a hand through his hair, and crossed the room. Emma scrambled for something anything to cover herself with, finally grabbing Jake’s T-shirt from the floor and tugging it over her head just as the door flew open.

Mia stood in the threshold, phone still in hand, eyes wide and glassy with a mix of shock, hurt, and fury. Connor hovered awkwardly behind her in the hallway, looking like he’d rather be anywhere else.

“What the hell is this?” Mia demanded, holding up the photo she’d sent. The image was damning, Emma’s bare back, Jake’s arm slung possessively across her waist, both of them tangled in his sheets.

Jake lifted both hands, palms out. “Mia, let’s talk about this downstairs”

“Downstairs?” She laughed, high and brittle. “No. I want to hear it from both of you. Right now. My best friend and my brother?” Her gaze snapped to Emma, who was curled against the headboard in Jake’s oversized shirt, cheeks burning. “How long has this been going on?”

Emma’s throat closed. “It just happened. Tonight was the first”

“Bullshit.” Mia’s eyes filled with tears. “I’ve seen the way you look at him, Em. For years. And you” she whirled on Jake “you knew exactly how she felt and you still” Her voice broke. “You don’t do relationships, Jake. You use girls and discard them. She’s not one of them. She’s family.”

Jake flinched like she’d slapped him. “I know.”

“Do you?” Mia stepped closer, voice trembling. “Because the second you get bored, you’ll break her heart, and then I lose both of you.”

The words hung heavy in the air. Emma felt them like a punch to the gut. She’d thought the same thing a hundred times, but hearing it out loud from Mia, of all people made it real.

Jake’s jaw tightened. “That’s not going to happen.”

Mia scoffed. “You don’t get to promise that. You’ve never stuck around longer than a month.”

He took a step toward her, voice low and fierce. “This is different.”

“Is it?” Mia’s eyes searched his face, desperate for proof. “Or is it just new and shiny because it’s forbidden?”

Silence stretched, thick and suffocating.

Emma couldn’t take it anymore. She slid out of bed, Jake’s shirt falling to mid-thigh, and moved to Mia’s side. “I’m sorry,” she said softly. “I should’ve told you. We both should have. But it wasn’t planned. It just happened. And it’s not just sex.” She glanced at Jake, heart in her throat. “At least, I hope it’s not.”

Jake’s eyes met hers storm-gray and raw. “It’s not,” he said quietly. Firmly. “I meant what I said earlier. I want to try. For real.”

Mia looked between them, anger fracturing into something sadder. “I need air.” She turned abruptly, pushing past Connor and thundering down the stairs.

Connor gave them an apologetic shrug and followed her.

The door slammed again downstairs.

Jake exhaled slowly, tension radiating off him. He crossed to Emma, cupping her face gently. “You okay?”

She shook her head. “Not even a little.”

He pressed his forehead to hers. “I’ll fix this.”

“How?”

“I don’t know yet.” He kissed her softly, lingering. “But I will.”

They dressed in silence, Emma borrowing sweatpants from his drawer, Jake pulling on jeans and a hoodie. Downstairs, the living room light was on. Mia sat on the couch, knees pulled to her chest, staring out at the dark lake. Connor was nowhere in sight, he’d apparently made himself scarce.

Jake sat on the coffee table facing her. Emma hovered in the doorway, unsure.

“I’m not going to pretend I’ve been a saint,” Jake started, voice steady. “I’ve fucked around. A lot. Never let anyone close because it was easier that way. But Emma” He glanced back at her, eyes softening. “She’s been there my whole life. I didn’t see it, didn’t let myself see it until this summer. And now that I do, I can’t unsee it.”

Mia’s lips trembled. “You’ll hurt her.”

“Maybe,” he admitted, and Emma’s chest ached at the honesty. “But I’ll hurt worse if I walk away now. I’m not asking you to be okay with this tonight. I’m asking you to give me a chance to prove I can be more than the asshole you’re used to.”

Mia looked at Emma. “And you? You’re okay risking our friendship on him?”

Emma crossed the room, sitting beside her. “I’m terrified,” she admitted. “But I’ve been in love with him for years, Mia. Quietly. Stupidly. And tonight, for the first time, it felt like he might feel something back. I have to know if it’s real.”

Mia was quiet for a long time. Then she sighed, wiping her eyes. “If you break her heart, Jake, I will end you. Slowly.”

He nodded. “Understood.”

She stood, hugging Emma tightly. “I’m not ready to be happy about this. But I love you both too much to lose either of you.” She pulled back, managing a watery smile. “Just maybe lock the damn door next time.”

Emma laughed, the sound half-sob. “Deal.”

Mia left for her room, closing the door softly behind her.

Jake pulled Emma into his lap on the couch, wrapping his arms around her like he was afraid she’d vanish. “That could’ve gone worse.”

“She’ll come around,” Emma said, though her voice wavered.

He kissed her temple. “We’ll give her time.”

They sat like that for a while, the earlier fight draining the urgency from their bodies, leaving only quiet closeness. Eventually, he carried her back upstairs not to his room, but to hers, laying her gently on the guest bed.

“Sleep,” he murmured, brushing hair from her face. “I’ll be right down the hall if you need me.”

She caught his wrist. “Stay.”

He hesitated, then nodded, sliding in behind her, pulling her back against his chest. They fell asleep tangled together, fully clothed, heartbeat to heartbeat.

Morning brought fragile peace.

Mia was civil over coffee quiet, but not cold. Connor had left early with apologies. The three of them moved around each other carefully, like new roommates learning boundaries.

By afternoon, Mia announced she was spending the night at a friend’s. “Need a little space,” she said, hugging Emma again. “But I’m okay. Really.”

The door closed behind her, and the house settled into stillness.

Jake found Emma on the balcony, staring at the lake. He didn’t speak just wrapped his arms around her from behind, chin resting on her head.

“We’re okay,” he said quietly.

She leaned back into him. “Are we?”

He turned her gently, eyes serious. “I’m not going anywhere, Em. Not this time.”

Heat flared between them slow-building, inevitable. He kissed her deeply, hands sliding under her shirt, reacquainting themselves with bare skin. She tugged at his clothes, needing him closer, needing proof.

They didn’t make it upstairs.

He lifted her onto the wide balcony table, shoving her shorts down, mouth hot on her neck as he freed himself. One thrust and he was inside her bare this time, both of them too desperate for barriers. She gasped at the feel of him, skin on skin, nothing between them.

“Fuck, Emma,” he groaned, moving slow and deep, eyes locked on hers. “You feel”

She silenced him with a kiss, legs locking around his waist, meeting every thrust. It was slower than last night, more deliberate less frenzy, more claiming. He whispered her name like a prayer, thumb circling her clit until she came apart around him, pulling him over the edge with her.

They stayed joined, breathing hard, foreheads pressed together.

“I love you,” he said against her lips, voice rough with truth. “Have for longer than I knew.”

Tears pricked her eyes. “I love you too.”

He smiled real, unguarded, the kind she’d rarely seen. “Good. Because you’re stuck with me now.”

They cleaned up laughing softly, stealing kisses, hands unable to stop touching.

Later, curled on the couch watching the sunset over the lake, Emma’s phone buzzed.

A text from an unknown number, same one Jake had used before.

But this time, it wasn’t from him.

The message was a photo, Jake and her on the balcony table an hour ago, taken from the tree line across the property. Intimate. Unmistakable.

Below it, a single line

Cute. But how long before he gets bored again?

Tell him Kayla says hi.

Emma’s blood turned to ice.

Jake glanced over, smile fading as he saw her face. “What is it?”

She turned the phone toward him.

His expression went thunder-dark.

Because Kayla the blonde from the party wasn’t just a random hookup.

She was the one who’d been texting him all summer, refusing to accept it was over.

And now she was watching.

The phone buzzed again.

Another message

Game on.

Emma stood frozen in the kitchen, the phone still warm in her hand from where Jake had thrust it back at her. The video had ended, but the sounds lingered moans, laughter, Jake’s voice murmuring something low and intimate that twisted like a blade in her gut. One last time, for old times’ sake? The words weren’t loud, but they echoed louder than anything else in the silent house.Jake’s face had gone deathly pale, the possessive fire from moments ago replaced by raw panic. “Emma, it’s not what it looks like. That video is fake edited. I didn’t”“Stop.” Her voice came out flat, barely above a whisper, but it cut him off like a shout. She set the phone on the counter with deliberate care, as if it might explode. “Just tell me the truth. Did you go inside her apartment tonight?”He hesitated only a fraction of a second but it was enough.“Yes,” he admitted, voice rough. “For maybe five minutes. She opened the door crying, said she just wanted closure. I stepped in to tell her face-to-fac

Emma’s hand shook as she stared at the screen, the photo burning into her retinas like a brand. There they were she and Jake on the balcony table, mid-thrust, her legs wrapped around him, his hands gripping her thighs. The angle was from the trees, hidden and voyeuristic. Kayla’s message pulsed below it, Game on.Jake snatched the phone from her, his face hardening into something dangerous. “That bitch.”Emma wrapped her arms around herself, suddenly cold despite the summer night. “How did she get that? Was she watching us?”Jake’s jaw clenched, muscles ticking. He scrolled up, seeing the earlier texts from the unknown number the ones he’d sent her himself, teasing about tomorrow. “She must have hacked my old number or something. Fuck.” He tossed the phone onto the couch and pulled Emma against him, his body a wall of heat and tension. “I’m handling this. Now.”“What are you going to do?” she asked, voice small. His eyes met hers stormy, fierce. “Confront her. End this shit before it

  • Forbidden Summer Sins   Chapter 4: No turning back

Emma spent the entire day on edge.Every glance across the breakfast table, every casual brush of Jake’s arm as he reached for the orange juice, felt loaded with last night’s promise. He acted normal teasing Mia about her bedhead, arguing with Connor over fantasy football but his eyes kept finding Emma’s, dark and deliberate, like he was counting down the hours.Mia announced mid-afternoon that she and Connor were heading into town for dinner and a late movie. “Don’t wait up,” she sang, tossing her bag over her shoulder. The front door clicked shut behind them at six-thirty sharp. The house fell into sudden, electric silence.Emma was in the kitchen rinsing a glass when she heard his footsteps behind her slow, unhurried. She didn’t turn around.“Finally,” Jake said, voice low and rough. He didn’t touch her right away. Just stood close enough that she could feel the heat coming off him, smell the faint trace of his cologne mixed with lake water from an earlier swim. Her pulse thrummed

Emma didn’t sleep. She lay in the dark guest room, ceiling fan whirring overhead, every nerve in her body still singing from Jake’s mouth on hers. The taste of him lingered salt and heat and something dangerously addictive. Her lips felt swollen, her skin too tight, her core aching with a need she’d ignored for years. She kept replaying the moment, the way he’d groaned her name, the hard press of him against her, the raw hunger in his eyes just before Mia’s laugh had shattered everything. This isn’t over. His words echoed like a promise. Or a threat.By two a.m., she gave up on sleep. She slipped out of bed, padded barefoot down the hall toward the kitchen for water. The house was silent, moonlight spilling silver across the hardwood floors. She almost missed him.Jake was on the back patio, sprawled in one of the lounge chairs by the pool, a bottle of whiskey dangling from his fingers. He wore only loose black boxer briefs, the rest of him bare and bathed in moonlight. His head was t

  • Forbidden Summer Sins   Chapter 2: Heatweave

The next morning dawned brutal, mid-July sun already scorching by nine a.m., the kind of heat that made the air shimmer above the driveway and turned the lake into a mirror of blue fire. Emma woke with a dull throb behind her eyes, courtesy of too little sleep and too much replaying Jake’s midnight visit. You looked good tonight, Em. The words looped in her head like a song she couldn’t shake. She dragged herself downstairs in search of coffee. The house was quiet, Mia had crashed at her boyfriend-of-the-week’s place, and their parents were still on their annual European cruise. Which left Emma alone with the one person she most wanted to avoid.Jake was in the kitchen.Of course he was.He stood at the counter in nothing but those same gray sweatpants riding low on his hips, pouring coffee into a mug with one hand while scrolling his phone with the other.
