The heavy library doors swung open with a slow, agonizing groan. Amorcio stepped into the room, his phone already tucked back into his velvet jacket. His sharp eyes scanned the dimly lit space, narrowing slightly as they jumped from Hailey, who stood rigid by the desk, to Claudia, who was half-submerged in the shadows of the high bookshelves.

"There you are," Amorcio said, his voice dropping its corporate edge and returning to that smooth, patronizing purr. "I return to the dining room only to find an empty table. I should have known my daughter would drag you away to show off our family's collection of rare first editions."

"We were just getting acquainted, Amorcio," Hailey said. Her voice was flat, devoid of the tremor that had shaken it only moments before. She stepped away from the desk, her movements smooth and calculated as her corporate mask locked back into its flawless, unbreakable position. "Claudia was sharing some of her thoughts on the estate's architectural history."

"Is that so?" Amorcio walked over to Hailey, placing a heavy, possessive hand on her waist. Hailey forced herself not to flinch, though every muscle in her back tightened under his touch. He looked over at his daughter, an amused, condescending smile playing on his lips. "I didn't think Claudia cared for anything built before the minimalist era. She usually finds this place suffocating."

Claudia stepped out of the shadows, her arms crossed over her chest. Her dark eyes were entirely unreadable, the empathy she had felt for Hailey moments ago safely hidden behind a wall of cold indifference. "I do find it suffocating. But Ms. Valdemort and I found some... common ground."

As she watched her father's hand rest heavily on Hailey’s hip, a sudden, violent surge of possessiveness roared to life in Claudia’s chest. A red-hot flash of anger blinded her for a fraction of a second. She looked at Hailey’s rigid posture, sensing the invisible cage closing around her, and a reckless, desperate thought gripped her mind. She almost wanted to reach out, wrap her fingers tightly around Hailey’s wrist, and physically grab her away from her father. She wanted to drag her out of this suffocating mansion, away from the corporate contracts, and force her to run. But logic slammed down hard on her impulses, reminding her of the cold reality of Hailey's collapsing empire.

"Excellent," Amorcio said, clapping his hands together once, entirely oblivious to the dark thoughts swirling in his daughter's mind. "Because that brings me to the secondary purpose of this dinner. Follow me to the drawing room. A delivery arrived while I was on my call."

The tension followed them like a physical weight as they walked down the grand corridor. The air in the estate felt thick, charged with the volatile secrets now binding the two women together. When they stepped into the brightly lit drawing room, Claudia’s breath hitched. Spread across a massive glass coffee table were several blank layout sheets, topographic land surveys, and a sleek leather portfolio.

Standing beside the table was Nachoz, Hailey’s trusted assistant. He held a tablet in one hand, looking up and bowing respectfully as the three entered.

"Good evening, Mr. Vioz, Ms. Valdemort," Nachoz said, his eyes lingering on Hailey with a subtle, protective flicker of concern before he looked at Claudia. "And you must be Ms. Vioz. I’ve brought the land deeds and the structural parameters for the new coastal property, as requested."

"Thank you, Nachoz," Hailey murmured, stepping forward to take a seat on the silk sofa, deliberately choosing a spot that forced Amorcio to sit beside her rather than opposite her.

Claudia remained standing, her gaze locked onto the blueprints on the table. "What is this, Amorcio?"

"This, Claudia, is your next project," her father announced, leaning back against the sofa cushions and gesturing magnanimously to the documents. "As a wedding gift to Hailey, I have purchased the cliffs overlooking the Oakhaven bay. I intend to build a state-of-the-art residential sanctuary there. A true monument to the Vioz-Valdemort union."

A cold dread pooled in Claudia's stomach. She looked from her father to Hailey, whose face had gone completely pale under the warm lights of the drawing room.

"I don't do residential commissions for you," Claudia said, her voice dropping into a dangerous, quiet register. "I told you that two years ago."

"You do when I offer to completely fund the Northside community library project you've been bleeding your own savings dry to build," Amorcio countered smoothly, his eyes flashing with a ruthless, calculated certainty. He knew exactly where her levers were, and he had pulled them without hesitation. "I will sign a check covering your firm's entire overhead for the library tomorrow morning. In exchange, you will design this estate. And you will design it exactly to Hailey’s specifications."

Claudia’s hands balled into fists inside the pockets of her blazer. Her father was trapping her, buying her compliance just as he had bought Hailey’s survival. She looked at Hailey, searching those striking amber eyes for any sign of resistance. But Hailey remained perfectly still, her gaze fixed on the blank drafting sheets on the table.

"Hailey will have final approval on every layout, every materials list, and every interior structural boundary," Amorcio continued, entirely oblivious to the silent storm raging between the two women. "You two will meet daily starting tomorrow morning at Claudia's studio to finalize the conceptual phase. Nachoz has already aligned your schedules."

"Tomorrow morning?" Claudia echoed, a sharp, bitter laugh escaping her lips. "Don't you think that's a bit rushed, Amorcio? The wedding isn't for months."

"In my world, Claudia, time is capital," Amorcio said, his voice hardening into a final, unyielding command. "The press release regarding the merger and our engagement goes live on Monday morning. I want the ground broken on the estate before the media circus begins. Do we have an understanding?"

The drawing room fell into a heavy, suffocating silence. The clock on the mantle ticked away the seconds, each one feeling like a countdown to an inevitable explosion.

Claudia looked down at the leather portfolio on the table. Designing a house for her father was a nightmare. Designing a sanctuary for the woman she had spent a night of forbidden passion with—the woman who was about to become her stepmother—was a form of psychological torture she wasn't sure she could survive. Every meeting would be a minefield. Every discussion about "master bedrooms" and "shared spaces" would be laced with the memory of that hotel bed.

But she needed that library project. The children in the Northside district were counting on her, and her firm was weeks away from running out of capital. Her father knew it, and he had played his hand perfectly.

Slowly, Claudia uncurled her fists. She looked directly at Hailey, her dark eyes flashing a complicated mixture of defiance and a silent, aching challenge.

"Fine," Claudia whispered, her voice tight. "Tomorrow morning. Eight o'clock sharp at my studio. Don't be late, Ms. Valdemort."

Hailey finally lifted her gaze, her amber eyes meeting Claudia's with a quiet, devastating intensity. "I won't be, Claudia. I look forward to seeing your work."

Amorcio smiled, raising his crystal glass of scotch in a solitary toast to his own victory. He had no idea that by forcing them into the same room, he hadn't secured his legacy. He had just handed them the matches to burn his entire empire to the ground.

The silence inside the sprawling mahogany room was heavy, suffocating, and instantly lethal. It was a dense, physical vacuum that seemed to suck the remaining warmth from the air, leaving nothing but the cold, clinical scent of luxury linen and old money.Hailey Grace Valdemort stood frozen across the threshold, her hands clutching her leather bag like a shield that had already been pierced through the center. The morning light filtering through the excessive cream silk hangings was harsh, painting the room in a slate-gray clarity that left no room for illusion. Her amber eyes locked onto Claudia’s bare, rain-scabs-marked shoulders, then flicked downward to the blonde hair spilled across the silk pillows beside her.Hailey could not define what exactly she was feeling. It was a sensation that transcended mere jealousy, a toxic, paralyzing numbness that seeped into her very bones and slowed her pulse to a dull, heavy thrum. Her world seemed ready to shatter at any given moment, the fra

The fragile liberation of the studio didn't even survive the weekend. By Sunday afternoon, the clinical, multi-billion-dollar gravity of reality crashed back down on Hailey’s shoulders with a devastating force. A single phone call from her family’s desperate attorneys, detailing the imminent federal indictment of her brothers if the Vioz liquidity injection wasn’t finalized by Monday morning, tore through her remaining resistance. She had built another fortress, colder and more impenetrable than before. She sent Claudia a single, bloodless text message: I cannot let my family burn for a beautiful mistake. The press release goes live tomorrow. Do not contact me again outside of professional parameters. The rejection hit Claudia like a structural collapse. Her protective devotion, her reckless vows to burn her father's empire to the ground—all of it was reduced to rubble by a single, clinical paragraph.By midnight, Claudia was drowning herself in a bleak, high-society lounge on the edg

  • Forbidden Ties    Chapter 18: The Collapse of Structural Integrity

For two agonizing hours, the drafting table remained a psychological minefield. Daniella had extracted every ounce of satisfaction she could from the arrangement, dropping laced comments and heavy touches, while Hailey endured the slow-motion execution of her own soul. But high-society games needed an audience, and eventually the warehouse's suffocating atmosphere grew too dense even for a Silvantez. "Well," Daniella said, sliding her leather folder off the desk with a smooth, synchronized movement. She checked her diamond-encrusted watch, her eyes throwing a final, predatory glance between the two women. "I think the preliminary parameters are perfectly understood. I’ll report back to Tito Amorcio that we are making... exceptional progress. See you tonight, Claud." She leaned in, deliberately pressing a lingering kiss to Claudia’s jawline—one that Claudia allowed solely to keep her gaze anchored on Hailey’s shattering composure—before spinning on her heel. The heavy metal studi

The rain against the high warehouse windows shifted into a heavy, rhythmic drone, sealing the three women inside the concrete studio. Daniella tossed her wet designer umbrella onto a nearby leather chair, her heels striking a slow, deliberate cadence as she approached the drafting table. She laid the sleek folder of environmental reports directly over the topographic maps, her movements calculated, her eyes gleaming with a predatory focus. "Tito Amorcio was incredibly specific about the cliff stabilization," Daniella said, her voice smooth and airy, though it carried an unmistakable edge of malice. She leaned over the table, her gaze intentionally dropping to Claudia’s right wrist, where Hailey’s embroidered gold initials were stained a deep, dried rust. "He doesn't want anything sliding out of place. He likes things... anchored." Hailey stood rigidly by her stool, her charcoal wool jacket buttoned tight, her fingers laced neatly over her leather clutch. Her corporate mask was

  • Forbidden Ties    Chapter 16: The Architecture of Deception

The air inside Claudia’s warehouse studio was heavy with the scent of rain, damp concrete, and the sharp tang of graphite. At exactly eight o'clock, the relentless morning downpour hammered against the high, unwashed windows, creating a dull roar that failed to drown out the suffocating silence settled over the drafting table. The land surveys and blank vellum sheets for the new coastal property were spread out like a battle plan between them. Nachoz had left minutes earlier to coordinate with the site surveyors, leaving Claudia and Hailey entirely alone in the cavernous, minimalist space.Claudia stood over the table, her dark hair pinned back loosely with a wooden drafting stylus. Her midnight-black silk dress had been replaced by a pair of faded denim jeans and an oversized black canvas work shirt, the sleeves rolled up to reveal her forearms. Wrapped tightly around her right wrist was Hailey’s white linen handkerchief. The crimson bloodstain had dried into a deep, rust-colored kno

  • Forbidden Ties    Chapter 15: The Geometry of Suspicion

Daniella Silvantez swirled the lukewarm dregs of her espresso, her gaze fixed entirely on the empty corridor leading to the cafe's private restrooms. To anyone else, Daniella was a creature of pure high-society luxury—a flawless, unbothered heiress who navigated Oakhaven’s elite circles with the effortless grace of a runway model. But beneath the diamonds and the designer label armor lay a razor-sharp intuition that had kept her alive and relevant in a world built on deception. She knew Claudia Vioz better than anyone else in this city. She had spent two turbulent years memorizing the cadence of Claudia’s laughter, the exact shade of dark fury in her eyes when her father cornered her, and the protective walls she built around her heart. And right now, those walls were structural anomalies. They weren't making sense. "The Valdemort portfolio is a sound investment, of course," Amorcio was saying, his voice a low, booming hum as he sliced through his flawless eggs Benedict. He was en
